Chapter 11

The trial took nine months to begin.

By then, Noah was walking.

Every step felt like a miracle and a warning.

I childproofed everything twice.

Pool fence.

Gate alarm.

Door alarms.

Window sensors.

Cameras.

But therapy taught me that safety could not become a cage.

Noah needed a father, not a prison guard.

I worked on that.

Slowly.

Maria testified during pretrial hearings.

She wore a navy dress and kept her hands folded.

Her scars had faded.

The prosecutor asked, “Why did you jump into the pool?”

Maria looked confused by the question.

“Because baby was in water.”

Simple.

Pure.

The defense tried to suggest she had been negligent.

Maria lifted her head.

“I was folding his blankets. Mrs. Vanessa opened gate. I heard wheels. I ran.”

“Are you angry at Mrs. Vanessa?”

Maria paused.

“I am afraid of her.”

That answer quieted the room.

Fear is cleaner than anger sometimes.

Harder to attack.
