Chapter 20

On Noah’s eighteenth birthday, we held a party in the backyard of the house with no pool.

Maria came in blue scrubs after her shift.

Mr. Alvarez came with Bruno’s old collar because Bruno had passed years earlier, and yes, we still toasted him.

James grilled badly.

Noah laughed with friends under the orange tree.

At sunset, he stood and lifted his glass.

“To my dad, who believed the woman who saved me.”

My throat closed.

He turned to Maria.

“And to Tía Maria, who jumped before anyone asked.”

Maria cried immediately.

“No speeches,” she said.

Everyone applauded anyway.

Later, Noah walked with me near the fence.

“Do you ever think about the pool?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Me too. Even though I don’t remember it.”

I nodded.

“Some stories live in families before memory.”

He looked back at Maria laughing with guests.

“Good thing this one has her in it.”

“Yes,” I said. “Very good thing.”

Vanessa had tried to make Maria the villain of the worst moment of our lives.

She failed.

The video told the truth.

The silver remote told the truth.

The scraped hands told the truth.

And the child she risked grew up knowing exactly who ran toward him when the stroller hit the water.

Not the woman who pointed.

The woman who jumped.
