Chapter 9: The Enemy Who Was Always Inside
The gun in Valentina’s hand changed everything.
Not because she was pointing it at Alessandro.
Because she was standing with my security team.
My own people.
The men who had sworn loyalty to me.
The men who had protected my home.
And now they were standing in an abandoned building with weapons drawn, waiting for someone’s command.
I looked at Valentina.
“Put the gun down.””
Her eyes moved between me and Alessandro.
“I can’t.””
The answer hurt more than I expected.
Not because I feared her.
Because I had spent years believing I knew her.
“Valentina.””
Her hand shook.
“I need you to listen.””
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“You need to explain.””
The guards behind her shifted.
Nobody wanted to move first.
Nobody wanted to be the person who turned this into a massacre.
Valentina looked at me.
“I never betrayed you.””
I almost laughed.
“You came here with armed men.””
“To stop him.””
She pointed at Alessandro.
He smiled.
“You still think she is protecting you.””
Valentina turned sharply.
“Be quiet.””
That reaction told me something.
They knew each other.
They had history.
But not the kind Alessandro wanted me to believe.
I stepped forward.
“Start talking.””
Valentina lowered the weapon slightly.
“Three years ago, when Isabella died, she left me a message.””
My eyes narrowed.
“A message?””
She nodded.
“Not a letter.””
“Then what?””
“A recording.””
Everyone went silent.
“She knew someone would try to change the story after her death.””
I looked at Alessandro.
His expression had changed.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
“Where is it?””
Valentina swallowed.
“Hidden.””
“Where?””
She looked at Ruby’s pendant.
Then at me.
“In the one place nobody thought to look.””
My patience was gone.
“Valentina.””
“In Ruby’s hospital bracelet.””
The room froze.
Adrian whispered:
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Valentina continued.
“I removed it the night she was born.””
“Why?””
“Because Isabella told me.””
Her voice became softer.
“She said the bracelet contained something that could destroy everyone who wanted Ruby.””
I stared at her.
“Where is it?””
Valentina looked toward the guards.
“I gave it to Marcus.””
Everyone looked at him.
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I kept it safe.””
I turned.
“You had it?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
Marcus looked ashamed.
“No.””
The anger returned.
But before I could speak, Alessandro laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
“You still don’t understand.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
“You are all fighting over a message.””
His eyes moved to Valentina.
“To a woman who already knew she was losing.””
Then he looked at me.
“But none of you are asking the important question.””
“What question?””
He smiled.
“Who made Isabella afraid?””
Nobody answered.
Because that was the question buried beneath everything.
Not the list.
Not the pendant.
Not Ruby’s blood.
Who had forced Isabella to hide her own daughter?
Valentina looked at Alessandro.
“You know.””
His expression darkened.
“Yes.””
“Tell him.””
“No.””
Her face changed.
“Alessandro.””
“You want him to know?””
He stepped closer.
“You think the truth will make him stronger?””
His eyes moved to me.
“No.””
“It will destroy him.””
I stared at him.
“You don’t decide what I can handle.””
Alessandro looked almost amused.
“You still sound like her.””
“Like who?””
“Isabella.””
The name made the room quieter.
“She believed you could survive anything.””
A pause.
“But she was wrong about one thing.””
“What?””
“She believed you could forgive.””
I felt anger rise.
“You don’t know me.””
“No?””
Alessandro looked toward Ruby’s pendant.
“You spent three years loving a child who might not share your blood.””
I stepped forward.
“And?””
His expression changed.
Because he expected pain.
He expected weakness.
But he had misunderstood something.
“She is my daughter.””
The words came without hesitation.
“She has been my daughter every second of her life.””
Nobody moved.
Even Alessandro was quiet.
I continued.
“Blood created her.””
I looked at the pendant.
“But love raised her.””
For the first time, Alessandro looked away.
Because he had lost control of the conversation.
Then Valentina spoke.
“Domenico.””
I turned.
“There is something else.””
Of course there was.
There was always something else.
“What?””
Her eyes filled.
“The person who attacked Isabella that night…”
She stopped.
I waited.
“Was not trying to take Ruby.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“They were trying to take the record.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Then why did they go after the baby?””
Valentina looked at me.
“Because Isabella hid the record inside Ruby’s things.””
I frowned.
“What things?””
Her voice became almost a whisper.
“Inside her.””
The room went silent.
I felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
Valentina shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Adrian suddenly moved.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
He walked toward the table.
“The medical records.””
He opened the folder.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then he stopped.
“No.””
I stared.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“The doctor who delivered Ruby…”
His face changed.
“He wasn’t trying to save her.””
The room froze.
“He was trying to remove something.””
My voice became dangerous.
“What?””
Adrian looked at the records.
“Ruby was given a procedure.””
“What procedure?””
He looked terrified.
“A tiny device was placed under her skin.””
Nobody spoke.
My mind refused to accept it.
“A device?””
Adrian nodded.
“Not a weapon.””
“Then what?””
“A storage device.””
I stared.
“A child?””
“Domenico.””
“No.””
My voice shook with anger.
“No one uses my daughter as a container.””
Adrian looked down.
“Isabella agreed.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
“She made the choice.””
“Why?””
“Because there was no other way.””
I looked at Valentina.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“Not everything.””
“Enough.””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“And you let me believe—”
“I let you believe Ruby was safe.””
“No.””
I looked around the room.
“You let me believe I knew my own daughter.””
The silence was painful.
Then my phone rang.
Not mine.
Valentina’s.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“Who is it?””
She answered.
No one spoke.
Then her expression became pure fear.
She handed me the phone.
A voice came through.
A woman’s voice.
Old.
Calm.
“Domenico.””
I froze.
Because I recognized it.
Not from memory.
From the stories Isabella had told me.
The voice of a woman who had spent years hiding.
Clara Bellini.
But Clara was standing right beside me.
I looked at her.
The woman beside me went pale.
The voice continued.
“You finally found the truth.””
Everyone looked at Clara.
Then at the phone.
Two voices.
Same name.
Impossible.
The woman on the phone laughed softly.
“Don’t trust the woman standing next to you.””
The room became ice.
I looked at Clara.
She whispered:
“No.””
The voice continued.
“She is not Isabella’s mother.””
My heart stopped.
The woman beside me took one step back.
Then the voice said:
“The real Clara Bellini died twelve years ago.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
I stared at the woman who had walked into my home claiming to hold the answers.
And suddenly every answer became another question.
The phone went silent.
Then one final message appeared.
A photograph.
A hospital record.
A name.
May you like
And beneath it:
The woman you welcomed into your home is the person who changed Ruby’s life forever.
