Chapter 5: The Doctor Who Changed Ruby’s Fate
The first thing I noticed was that Dr. Adrian Moretti was not afraid.
Most people who broke into the Falcone estate had one of two reactions.
They either begged.
Or they ran.
Adrian did neither.
He stood inside my daughter’s bedroom as if he belonged there.
As if he had been waiting years for this exact moment.
My guards kept their weapons aimed at him.
“Step away from my daughter.””
My voice was quiet.
But everyone in that hallway understood the warning.
Adrian looked at Ruby.
The little girl was sitting on the floor, holding her stuffed rabbit against her chest.
She was not crying.
That surprised me.
Most strangers made her nervous.
But she was looking at him with curiosity.
Like some small part of her recognized him.
Adrian slowly raised his hands.
“I did not come here to hurt her.””
I moved closer.
“Then explain why you were standing beside her bed.””
His eyes shifted toward the empty shelves.
Toward the room that had been packed away.
“I wanted to see if the rumors were true.””
“What rumors?””
“That they finally tried to erase her.””
The words hit me.
I looked at Valentina.
She had stopped behind me.
Her face was pale.
Adrian noticed.
“You never told him everything.””
Valentina’s voice trembled.
“Adrian, you shouldn’t be here.””
“You know I had no choice.””
My eyes moved between them.
“You two know each other.””
Neither answered.
That was enough.
I turned to Valentina.
“How?””
She opened her mouth.
But Adrian spoke first.
“Because she was there.””
The hallway became silent.
“Three years ago, when Ruby was born.””
My hand tightened.
“You were the doctor.””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His expression changed.
Because the answer was not simple.
“Because I was told that if I stayed, Ruby would die.””
Nobody moved.
The guards exchanged confused looks.
I stepped forward.
“Who told you?””
Adrian looked directly at me.
“Your wife.””
My eyes immediately turned toward Valentina.
She closed her eyes.
“Domenico…”
“No.””
My voice cut through hers.
“You have been hiding things from me for three years.””
Valentina looked broken.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I pointed toward Ruby.
“You were trying to protect her.””
A painful silence followed.
Because it was true.
Whatever Valentina had done, everything had always circled back to Ruby.
But that did not erase what she had taken from my daughter.
Her room.
Her security.
Her feeling of belonging.
Adrian looked at me.
“May I explain?””
I did not answer immediately.
Then I nodded once.
“Talk.””
He walked slowly toward the center of the room.
But he kept his distance from Ruby.
That told me something.
He respected her fear.
“She was born during a dangerous time.””
I frowned.
“Everyone says that.””
“Because everyone knew about the war between families.””
He shook his head.
“That was not the real danger.””
“Then what was?””
Adrian looked at Ruby.
“Her bloodline.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
“Isabella was not only your wife.””
His voice lowered.
“She was part of something older.””
I hated vague answers.
“What?””
Adrian reached into his coat.
Every guard reacted instantly.
But he slowly removed a small folder.
He placed it on the floor.
“I brought proof.””
I walked forward and picked it up.
Inside were medical records.
Old documents.
Names.
Dates.
My eyes stopped on one page.
Isabella’s name.
And below it…
A symbol.
One I recognized.
The Vieri family crest.
My jaw tightened.
“What is this?””
Adrian answered.
“Before Isabella married you, she belonged to a hidden alliance between several powerful families.””
I looked up.
“She never told me.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted Ruby to have a normal life.””
I almost laughed.
Normal.
There was nothing normal about my life.
Nothing normal about hers.
Adrian continued.
“But someone found out.””
“Alessandro.””
He nodded.
“Alessandro Vieri discovered what Isabella was protecting.””
“What?””
Adrian looked at Ruby.
“A list.””
The word hung in the air.
“What list?””
“The names of people who secretly controlled the criminal networks across Europe.””
The room went quiet.
I looked at the documents again.
A list.
A weapon.
A reason someone would come after a newborn child.
“Where is it?””
Adrian looked at me.
“That is the question everyone has been asking for three years.””
I turned the page.
There were missing sections.
Someone had removed parts of the file.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“Then why is Ruby involved?””
Adrian looked toward the little girl.
“Because Isabella hid the final copy before she died.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where?””
Adrian’s expression became serious.
“She hid it somewhere nobody would search.””
I looked around the room.
The empty shelves.
The toys.
The blankets.
The drawings.
My daughter’s room.
“No.””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
I felt a chill.
“Inside this house?””
“Inside Ruby’s room.””
Everyone went silent.
Valentina whispered:
“That’s why I moved her.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
She looked at the floor.
“When Alessandro’s people started searching, I realized they would eventually come here.””
“So you packed her things.””
“Yes.””
“And you thought putting her in storage would protect her?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I thought if nobody saw her room, nobody would know where to look.””
I looked at Ruby.
She was watching us.
Listening.
Understanding more than a child should.
I crouched beside her.
“Ruby.””
She looked at me.
“Do you remember anything unusual about your room?””
She thought carefully.
Then shook her head.
“No.””
“What about your toys?””
Her eyes moved to her rabbit.
Then she hugged it tighter.
“Bunny was in the closet.””
My heart stopped.
“The closet?””
She nodded.
“Mommy moved everything.””
Adrian immediately looked at Valentina.
“You didn’t check the closet?””
Valentina frowned.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought Isabella hid it somewhere nobody would touch.””
Adrian walked toward the closet.
Slowly.
Carefully.
He opened the door.
Inside were empty shelves.
A few forgotten boxes.
And one small wooden panel at the back.
He stopped.
Everyone noticed.
“What?””
Adrian pointed.
“There.””
I moved closer.
The panel looked normal.
But there was a small scratch near the edge.
Someone had opened it before.
I looked at Valentina.
“Did you know about this?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Adrian carefully removed the panel.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Empty.
Almost.
Inside was a small piece of paper.
Nothing else.
I grabbed it.
There was only one sentence.
Written in Isabella’s handwriting.
Protect Ruby from the person who says they love her most.
The entire room froze.
I read it again.
My heart sank.
Because Isabella had not written:
Protect Ruby from Alessandro.
She had not written:
Protect Ruby from enemies.
She had written:
The person who says they love her most.
My eyes moved slowly.
To Valentina.
To Adrian.
To myself.
Everyone was suddenly a possibility.
Then Ruby spoke.
A tiny voice.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
She was looking at the paper.
“Is Mommy in trouble?””
The question cut deeper than any threat.
Because my daughter was still worried about Valentina.
Even after everything.
I walked to her.
“No, sweetheart.””
I lifted her into my arms.
“Daddy is just trying to understand.””
Adrian watched quietly.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Nobody moved.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his face lost all color.
“What do you mean she escaped?””
I stepped forward.
“Who escaped?””
Adrian ended the call.
For the first time since entering my home, he looked afraid.
“Domenico…”
“Who?””
He looked at Ruby.
Then at the note in my hand.
“The person who started all of this.””
A pause.
Then he said:
“The woman who was supposed to die the same night Isabella did.””
My blood went cold.
“What woman?””
Adrian swallowed.
“Ruby’s biological grandmother.””
The room went silent.
Because that was impossible.
Ruby’s grandmother had been dead for years.
Everyone knew that.
Everyone except apparently Adrian.
And then my phone received a new message.
One picture.
A woman standing outside the Falcone estate gates.
Older.
Alive.
Under the picture was a message:
You spent three years protecting the wrong person.
And beneath it was a name.
May you like
The name of a woman I thought I had buried forever.
Isabella’s mother.
