Chapter 6: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

For three years, I had believed the greatest danger to my daughter came from outside the walls of my home.

I was wrong.

The danger had been hiding in memories.

In secrets.

In the things people decided I was not strong enough to know.

I stood in my daughter’s bedroom holding the photograph.

The woman in the picture stared back at me.

Older.

Different.

But impossible to mistake.

Clara Bellini.

Isabella’s mother.

A woman I had watched lowered into the ground.

A woman whose funeral I had attended.

A woman everyone told me had died before Ruby was born.

But there she was.

Alive.

Standing outside my gates.

Waiting.

“Domenico,” Valentina whispered.

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

“Did you know Isabella’s mother was alive?””

“No.””

“Did Isabella?””

Valentina looked away.

That hesitation hurt more than the answer.

“Valentina.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Even Adrian looked at her.

“You knew?””

Valentina nodded slowly.

“But not everything.””

I stepped away from everyone.

The anger inside me was no longer sharp.

It was heavy.

Three years.

Three years of people deciding what I could handle.

Three years of protecting me by lying to me.

“Everyone knew something.””

My voice was low.

“Everyone except me.””

Nobody argued.

Because they knew I was right.

I looked down at Ruby.

She was still in my arms.

Still holding her rabbit.

Still too young to understand that the adults around her had built a wall of secrets over her entire life.

I kissed her forehead.

“Take Ruby to the safe room.””

Valentina immediately looked at me.

“I can—”

“No.””

The word stopped her.

Not because I wanted to punish her.

Because I did not know if I could trust anyone yet.

A painful expression crossed her face.

But she nodded.

“I understand.””

She reached for Ruby.

My daughter hesitated.

Then looked at me.

“Daddy?””

“I’ll be right there.””

She studied my face.

Children always knew when adults were lying.

Thankfully, this time I was telling the truth.

“I promise.””

Only after she left did I turn back to Adrian.

“Tell me everything.””

Adrian looked toward the hallway where Ruby disappeared.

“She cannot know any of this.””

“She’s three.””

“I know.””

“Then start talking.””

He took a breath.

“Clara Bellini was not supposed to be involved.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Isabella’s family was different from yours.””

I almost smiled.

“My family controls the city.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was serious.

“Your family controls what people can see.””

He pointed toward the documents.

“Her family controlled information.””

I said nothing.

Adrian continued.

“For decades, the Bellini family kept records. Deals. Agreements. Secrets.””

“The list.””

“Yes.””

“And Isabella inherited it?””

“She inherited the responsibility.””

I looked at the note.

Protect Ruby from the person who says they love her most.

“Who was she afraid of?””

Adrian looked at Valentina.

Then back at me.

“That is what we never discovered.””

I hated the way he said we.

Like there had been an entire world operating around me.

“What happened the night Isabella died?””

Adrian became quiet.

Then he answered.

“Someone tried to take Ruby.””

My jaw tightened.

“Who?””

“We don’t know.””

“You expect me to accept that?””

“I expect you to understand why Isabella made everyone promise silence.””

He stepped closer.

“She knew you.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“She knew you would destroy anyone who threatened your daughter.””

“That sounds reasonable.””

“No.””

Adrian shook his head.

“She knew you would destroy everything.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because he was right.

If someone had told me three years ago that Ruby was in danger because of some hidden secret, I would have started a war.

No negotiations.

No patience.

Just revenge.

“And Isabella thought that would put Ruby at risk.””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

The worst part was that I understood.

I did not like it.

But I understood.

My phone rang.

The security chief.

I answered immediately.

“What happened?””

“Boss.””

His voice was tense.

“We have a problem.””

“What?””

“The woman at the gate refuses to leave.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Bring her inside.””

Valentina’s voice came from behind me.

“Domenico, wait.””

I turned.

She looked terrified.

“You don’t know what she wants.””

I looked at her.

“Neither do you.””

That hurt her.

But she accepted it.

Five minutes later, the woman entered the office.

Clara Bellini looked exactly like someone who had survived something impossible.

Her hair was silver.

Her posture was straight.

Her eyes were sharp.

Not the eyes of an old woman.

The eyes of someone who had spent years watching enemies.

She stopped when she saw me.

Then looked past me.

Toward the hallway.

“Where is Ruby?””

I immediately stepped forward.

“You don’t ask questions in my house.””

Clara studied me.

“You sound exactly like your father.””

I froze.

Nobody spoke about my father.

Not unless they wanted trouble.

“You knew him?””

“I knew everyone who mattered.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“Why are you here?””

Clara looked at the documents on my desk.

Then at the note.

Then at Adrian.

Her expression changed.

“You found it.””

I stared.

“You knew about this?””

She ignored the question.

“You found Isabella’s message.””

I stepped closer.

“How?””

Clara looked at me.

“Because I helped her write it.””

The room went completely still.

“You what?””

“She knew she was running out of time.””

My voice became colder.

“You let her die.””

Clara’s face hardened.

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

“I tried to save her.””

“Then why did she die?””

“Because someone close to her betrayed her.””

Every person in the room became silent.

Someone close.

The same words.

The same warning.

I looked at Valentina.

Then Marcus’s face appeared in my mind.

Then every person who had touched Ruby’s life.

“Who?””

Clara looked at me.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“The person who betrayed Isabella was not trying to kill Ruby.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

“They were trying to take Ruby.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why?””

Clara looked toward the hallway.

Toward where my daughter was.

“Because Ruby is the only person alive who can unlock the final record.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You’re sure?””

Clara nodded.

“She carries the key.””

I looked at Ruby’s empty room.

The hidden compartment.

The missing list.

The secrets.

“What key?””

Clara reached into her coat.

Everyone reacted.

But she slowly removed a small necklace.

A tiny silver pendant.

My breath stopped.

Because I knew it.

I had seen it before.

Around Isabella’s neck.

The night she died.

Clara placed it on the table.

“She was born wearing this.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Clara looked directly at me.

“It was removed from her before the doctors handed her to you.””

My eyes moved to Adrian.

The doctor looked away.

“You knew.””

Adrian’s silence was enough.

I turned toward him.

“You knew my daughter had something hidden on her?””

“I knew Isabella trusted me.””

“That is not an answer.””

Before Adrian could respond, the office door suddenly opened.

A guard stood there.

His face was pale.

“Boss.””

I turned.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“We found Marcus.””

My expression hardened.

“Where?””

“He left the estate.””

“When?””

“Ten minutes ago.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

The guard hesitated.

Then handed me a phone.

A message was displayed.

From Marcus.

Domenico,

I tried to protect Ruby the only way I knew how.

But you were never told the worst part.

Valentina did not pack Ruby’s room because of Alessandro.

She packed it because she discovered who Ruby’s real enemy was.

And before you find out…

I have to stop her.

The message ended there.

I looked up.

Valentina was standing frozen.

Because everyone in the room understood the same thing.

Marcus had not run from me.

He had run from her.

May you like

And for the first time, I wondered if the woman I thought had betrayed my daughter…

was actually the only person who had been trying to save her.
