Chapter 10: The Choice That Made Her My Daughter

For a moment, nobody moved.

The abandoned building was silent except for the sound of the wind pushing through broken windows.

Everyone was looking at the woman who had claimed to be Clara Bellini.

The woman who had walked into my home.

The woman who had carried secrets about my daughter.

The woman who had looked me in the eyes and said she wanted to protect Ruby.

And now someone was saying she was not Clara at all.

I looked at her.

She looked back at me.

Not with fear.

With sadness.

That was what confused me.

A liar should look afraid when the truth is exposed.

But she looked like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.

“Who are you?””

My voice was quiet.

The woman closed her eyes.

Then she removed the silver necklace she had been wearing.

Not the pendant.

A different one.

A small ring attached to a chain.

She placed it on the table.

“I was wondering how long it would take before someone found out.””

Valentina stepped back.

“No.””

The woman looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

My eyes moved between them.

“You know her.””

Valentina’s face was pale.

“I thought she was dead.””

The woman looked at me.

“My name is Elena Moretti.””

Adrian suddenly froze.

“What?””

She looked at him.

“Yes.””

His face changed completely.

“Mother?””

The room went silent.

Nobody expected that.

Not me.

Not Marcus.

Not even Valentina.

I looked at Adrian.

“Explain.””

He stared at the woman.

“My mother died when I was a child.””

Elena smiled sadly.

“Everyone thought that.””

I looked at her.

“So the message was true.””

She nodded.

“Clara Bellini died twelve years ago.””

She looked at the phone.

“The person who called you was telling the truth.””

My hand tightened.

“Then why did you pretend to be her?””

Elena looked toward the hallway.

Toward the direction of my home.

Toward Ruby.

“Because Clara trusted me.””

“That is not an answer.””

“It is the only one that matters.””

I stepped closer.

“Everyone keeps using protection as an excuse.””

My voice hardened.

“Everyone lies. Everyone hides. Everyone decides what I can handle.””

I pointed toward the door.

“But nobody asks what Ruby has to handle.””

The words affected her.

Because she understood.

“She was never supposed to carry this burden.””

“Then why did you put it on her?””

Elena looked down.

“I didn’t.””

Adrian interrupted.

“She’s telling the truth.””

I looked at him.

“How can you know?””

“Because I was there.””

The room became quiet.

Adrian took a breath.

“The device wasn’t a weapon.””

I looked at him.

“The storage device.””

He nodded.

“It contained encrypted information.””

“What information?””

“The location of the final record.””

I looked at Elena.

“And Ruby?””

“She was the only person Isabella trusted enough to carry it.””

I hated hearing those words.

A child.

A baby.

Carrying something that powerful.

“Why?””

Elena answered.

“Because nobody would search a newborn girl without exposing themselves.””

I looked away.

It was cruel.

But it was also true.

A child was the last place enemies expected a secret to be hidden.

“That doesn’t explain you.””

Elena nodded.

“I was Isabella’s closest friend.””

Valentina looked at her.

“No.””

Elena looked back.

“Not by blood.””

A pause.

“But by choice.””

She continued.

“Isabella knew she was being watched. She knew someone close to her had already betrayed her.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Everyone became still.

Elena looked at Alessandro.

For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.

“No.””

The word escaped him.

Elena smiled slightly.

“Yes.””

She turned toward me.

“The person who tried to take Ruby that night was not Alessandro.””

My eyes moved.

Alessandro looked away.

Not denying it.

Just accepting it.

“The person was someone inside the Falcone family.””

Marcus whispered:

“Who?””

Elena looked at him.

“You already know.””

Nobody spoke.

Then she said the name.

A name I had never considered.

A name that made my entire world tilt.

“Your father’s closest advisor.””

I stared.

“My father’s advisor died years ago.””

Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Because Isabella found out what he had done.””

I remembered.

My father’s old council.

The men who shaped the family before me.

The men who taught me that loyalty was everything.

One of them had betrayed us.

“Why?””

Elena answered:

“Because the record exposed him.””

I looked at the files.

The list.

The secrets.

The power.

“So Isabella died because of information.””

“Yes.””

“And Ruby survived because of it.””

“Yes.””

I looked down.

The answer was suddenly simple.

Too simple.

Everyone had been fighting over the secret.

Everyone except Ruby.

She had only wanted her father’s chair.

Her room.

Her place.

A place where she belonged.

My phone rang.

Security.

I answered.

“What?””

The guard’s voice came quickly.

“Boss.””

I heard panic.

“Ruby is missing.””

Everything stopped.

“What?””

My voice changed instantly.

“She was in the safe room.””

“Who was guarding her?””

“Everyone.””

My blood went cold.

“Everyone?””

The guard hesitated.

Then:

“They are unconscious.””

I ended the call.

The room exploded into movement.

I was already running.

No thoughts.

No questions.

Nothing mattered except one thing.

My daughter.

When I reached the estate, the entire house was chaos.

Guards on the floor.

Doors open.

Alarms screaming.

Valentina ran toward me.

“Domenico.””

I ignored everything.

“Where is she?””

Nobody answered.

Then I saw it.

On the floor outside the safe room.

Ruby’s stuffed rabbit.

My heart stopped.

I picked it up.

Then I saw the note attached.

Three words.

Come alone.

I looked at Valentina.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You cannot go alone.””

“I have to.””

“Domenico.””

I looked at her.

The woman who had lied.

The woman who had hidden things.

The woman who had still spent three years trying to protect my daughter.

“I’m bringing her back.””

She nodded.

“Then bring her back to us.””

The location on the note led me to the old hospital where Ruby was born.

The same place where my life changed.

The same place where Isabella died.

When I entered the abandoned building, I heard footsteps.

Then a small voice.

“Daddy?””

Everything stopped.

I ran.

Ruby was standing at the end of the hallway.

Safe.

A man stood behind her.

The traitor.

The one who had started everything.

My father’s former advisor.

Victor Salerno.

Older.

Weak.

But still smiling.

“You finally understand.””

I moved toward Ruby.

“Let her go.””

Victor laughed.

“You think this was about the list?””

I stopped.

“What?””

“The list was never the prize.””

He looked at Ruby.

“The prize was control.””

I stared.

“Over what?””

“Over you.””

The answer surprised me.

Victor continued.

“Your father built the Falcone empire through fear.””

He smiled.

“But Isabella knew something.””

“What?””

“She knew the only thing stronger than fear.””

I looked at Ruby.

“Love.””

Victor’s expression hardened.

“She made you weak.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“She made me human.””

For the first time, Victor looked uncertain.

“You would give up everything for her.””

“Yes.””

“Your empire?””

“Yes.””

“Your power?””

“Yes.””

“Your name?””

I looked at Ruby.

“My name means nothing without her.””

The hallway became silent.

Victor lowered his weapon.

Not because he changed.

Because he finally understood.

He had spent three years trying to find a weakness.

And he had never realized the thing he called weakness was the reason I could not be controlled.

Ruby ran to me.

I lifted her into my arms.

She immediately grabbed my jacket.

“Daddy.””

“I’m here.””

She looked at Victor.

“Is he bad?””

I looked at the man who had caused so much pain.

Then at my daughter.

“No one who hurts children deserves forgiveness easily.””

Ruby held onto me tighter.

When we returned home, everything changed.

The suitcases were unpacked.

Her room was rebuilt.

But I did not simply replace the things that were taken.

I changed something bigger.

The chair beside mine at the family table became permanent.

Not because Ruby needed a symbol.

Because everyone in the Falcone household needed a reminder.

Family was not about blood.

It was not about names.

It was not about power.

It was about who stayed.

Months later, people still talked about the night everything was revealed.

They talked about the secrets.

The betrayal.

The war that almost came.

But inside our home, the most important moment was much quieter.

Ruby sat beside me at dinner.

Her feet swung beneath the chair.

She looked at me and smiled.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Is this my place?””

I looked at her.

The little girl who had once fallen onto the carpet because someone decided she did not belong.

I smiled.

May you like

“This has always been your place.””

And this time, nobody could take it away.
