Chapter 7: The Truth Valentina Was Hiding

Marcus had always been a difficult man to understand.

He was loyal.

He was aggressive.

He was the kind of person who would walk into danger without hesitation if he believed it served his family.

But he was never careless.

Never.

So when he disappeared, leaving behind a message that sounded like a warning, I knew one thing.

He was not running away.

He was running toward something.

The question was what.

And why had he written that Valentina knew the real enemy?

I turned toward my wife.

She looked exhausted.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Just tired.

Like she had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

“Tell me.””

Valentina looked at me.

“I tried.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“But you stopped.””

She lowered her eyes.

“I was afraid.””

I looked around the room.

Clara.

Adrian.

Everyone waiting.

Everyone finally ready to tell me the truth.

“Afraid of what?””

Valentina took a slow breath.

“Of losing Ruby.””

I frowned.

“You already had her.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice broke slightly.

“I had her because you trusted me.””

The words surprised me.

Because they were not the words of someone protecting a secret.

They were the words of someone who knew she had failed.

“I don’t understand.””

Valentina walked toward the desk.

She picked up the silver pendant Clara had placed there.

“I found this three years ago.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Where?””

“In Isabella’s hospital room.””

The room went silent.

Adrian looked at her.

“You had it?””

Valentina nodded.

“I took it before anyone else could.””

I stared at her.

“You stole something from my daughter?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I saved it.””

“Explain.””

Valentina held the pendant tightly.

“When Isabella died, there were people inside the hospital who were not doctors.””

My expression changed.

“What people?””

“Men.””

She swallowed.

“They were looking for Ruby.””

Clara stepped forward.

“I knew.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did nobody tell me?””

Clara’s face hardened.

“Because the moment you knew, everyone knew.””

I hated that answer.

But I understood the logic.

My name was not a secret.

My enemies watched me.

They waited for my reactions.

A single wrong move could put my daughter in more danger.

Valentina continued.

“I saw them searching.””

Her voice became quieter.

“They were not looking for Isabella.””

She looked toward the hallway.

“They were looking for Ruby.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What did you do?””

“I moved her.””

“To where?””

“Another room.””

I stared.

“The room?””

She nodded.

“The nurse’s room.””

I remembered.

The night Ruby was born was chaos.

Doctors everywhere.

People running.

Nobody knew what was happening.

“I told the nurses that Ruby was having complications.””

Valentina looked down.

“And I took the pendant.””

“Why?””

“Because Isabella told me.””

My eyes sharpened.

“What did she tell you?””

Valentina looked at Clara.

Then Adrian.

Then me.

“She told me that if she didn’t survive, I had to make sure Ruby never carried the pendant where anyone could see it.””

I stared at her.

“You spoke to Isabella before she died?””

“Yes.””

The room became painfully quiet.

“What did she say?””

Valentina closed her eyes.

“I was holding her hand.””

Her voice trembled.

“She was barely conscious.””

“She looked at me and said, ‘Valentina, promise me.’”

I waited.

“She said, ‘Domenico will protect Ruby with his life. But he will destroy everyone trying to reach her. You have to protect him from himself.’”

The words hit me harder than I expected.

Because they sounded exactly like Isabella.

She had always known me.

Better than anyone.

Valentina continued.

“She made me promise not to tell you about the pendant.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed you would chase the people behind it.””

“And?””

“And you would leave Ruby unprotected.””

I looked away.

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody wanted to admit that Isabella might have been right.

I had built my entire life around eliminating threats.

But Ruby did not need a war.

She needed a father.

“So why pack her room?””

Valentina looked at the floor.

“Because they found us.””

The room changed.

“What?””

“Two weeks ago, I received a message.””

“From who?””

She shook her head.

“No name.””

“What did it say?””

Her hands trembled.

“They know where the key is.””

I looked at Clara.

The pendant.

The record.

The secret.

Valentina continued.

“They sent a picture.””

“Of what?””

“Ruby’s bedroom.””

My blood went cold.

“From inside the house?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

Because that meant someone had already entered.

Someone had watched my daughter.

Someone had stood near her bed.

And we never knew.

“I searched the room,” Valentina said.

“And found nothing.””

“But you thought they would come back.””

“Yes.””

“So you moved her things.””

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“But you made her feel unwanted.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

That was the first time she admitted it.

“I know what I did.””

A long silence followed.

Then Clara spoke.

“She made the wrong choice.””

Valentina looked at her.

“But she made it for the right reason.””

I looked between them.

A strange realization formed.

Everyone had made choices.

Bad choices.

Painful choices.

But most of them had been trying to protect the same little girl.

The problem was that Ruby was the one paying the price.

My phone suddenly rang.

Security.

Again.

I answered.

“What?””

The guard’s voice came quickly.

“Boss, we found Marcus.””

I stood immediately.

“Where?””

“He is at the old Bellini property.””

Clara’s face changed.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“That place is abandoned.””

“Apparently not.””

The guard continued.

“Someone is with him.””

My grip tightened.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Alessandro Vieri.””

The room froze.

I ended the call.

Clara looked terrified.

“He wanted Marcus.””

“Why?””

She shook her head.

“Because Marcus knows something.””

“What?””

Her eyes moved to Valentina.

Then to me.

“The truth about Ruby’s birth.””

I grabbed my coat.

“We’re going.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“I know Alessandro.””

“So do I.””

“You don’t know what he wants.””

I stared at him.

“I know what everyone wants.””

My voice hardened.

“They want my daughter.””

I turned to Valentina.

“You stay here with Ruby.””

She nodded.

But before I left, she grabbed my hand.

A small gesture.

Almost impossible to notice.

But I felt it.

“Domenico.””

I looked at her.

“Bring Marcus back.””

There was something in her eyes.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Something closer to hope.

I nodded once.

Then I left.

The old Bellini property sat outside the city.

Abandoned for years.

A place nobody visited.

A place forgotten by everyone.

Except apparently the people who knew its secrets.

When we arrived, the doors were already open.

Too open.

A trap.

I entered anyway.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

Old furniture.

Broken windows.

Empty rooms.

Then I heard voices.

Marcus.

And another man.

Alessandro.

I moved silently.

Until I reached the room at the back.

Marcus was sitting in a chair.

His hands tied.

But he was alive.

Standing in front of him was Alessandro Vieri.

Older than I remembered.

But still carrying the same cold confidence.

He turned before I spoke.

“Domenico.””

I raised my weapon.

“Move away from him.””

Alessandro smiled.

“You came.””

“You kidnapped my man.””

“No.””

He glanced at Marcus.

“He came to me.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Domenico, listen—”

Alessandro interrupted.

“You want answers.””

I kept my weapon steady.

“Talk.””

He smiled.

“Your wife thinks she saved Ruby.””

A pause.

“She did not.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What are you saying?””

Alessandro stepped closer.

“Valentina protected Ruby from the wrong enemy.””

The room became silent.

“Then who is the right enemy?””

Alessandro looked directly into my eyes.

And said the one name I never expected.

“Domenico.””

I froze.

“What?””

He smiled slightly.

“The person who wanted Ruby gone from the beginning…”

May you like

A pause.

“Was you.””
