Chapter 8: The Message He Never Meant Me to See

I didn't sleep at our house that night.

My mother insisted I stay with her, and for once, I didn't argue.

I packed a small bag with comfortable clothes, my prenatal vitamins, and the folder containing copies of the photographs from the gender reveal.

Before leaving, I stood in the doorway of the nursery.

The room was almost finished.

Soft curtains hung beside the window.

The crib stood against the wall.

Tiny clothes were arranged neatly in the dresser.

A stuffed animal rested on the rocking chair Blake had insisted we buy.

I had imagined bringing our baby into that room for the first time.

I had imagined Blake standing beside me, smiling as we watched our child sleep.

Now the room felt like a place I had prepared for a family that might never exist in the way I had imagined.

I didn't know whether Blake would remain part of our child's daily life.

I didn't know whether our marriage could survive what he had done.

But I knew I couldn't make those decisions while I was still discovering new lies every few hours.

I closed the nursery door and walked out.

At my mother's house, she prepared tea and encouraged me to eat something.

I managed a few bites of dinner before my stomach turned.

She sat across from me at the kitchen table.

“You don't have to be strong every second,” she said.

I stared at my hands.

“If I stop being strong, I don't know what will happen.””

She reached across the table and took one of them.

“You will still be you.””

My eyes filled with tears.

For the first time since the party, I allowed myself to cry without trying to hide it.

My mother held me until the worst of it passed.

Then she helped me settle into the guest room.

I lay awake long after she had gone to bed.

Blake sent several messages.

The first asked whether I had arrived safely.

The second said he was sorry for how the party had ended.

The third said we needed to talk.

I didn't answer.

Then, close to midnight, another message arrived.

“You're making this worse than it needs to be.””

I stared at the screen.

Not I'm sorry I betrayed you.

Not I'm sorry I lied.

Not even I understand why you need space.

Instead, he was concerned about the consequences.

I turned off my phone.

The next morning, I began making calls.

I contacted the bank and asked about the joint account, the transfers, and what documentation I could obtain.

I arranged to speak with an attorney about protecting my financial interests and understanding my options during the pregnancy.

I also made an appointment with my doctor because the stress of the previous day had left me exhausted and worried.

I didn't want to make assumptions about my health.

I wanted professional guidance and reassurance that I was doing what I could to protect myself and the baby.

By late morning, I had a clearer picture of the financial situation.

The thirty thousand dollars Blake had admitted moving was only part of the story.

Some of the money had gone into the investment.

Other transactions required further investigation.

I didn't yet know whether any of it could be recovered.

But I had enough information to understand that I needed to stop relying on Blake's explanations.

I saved every statement.

I recorded the dates of the transfers.

I made a list of questions for my attorney.

Then I opened my laptop and reviewed the photographs from the affair again.

I wasn't searching for proof that Blake had cheated.

I already had that.

I was trying to understand the timeline.

The messages showed that Blake and Harper had been meeting for months.

Some exchanges were affectionate.

Others were about scheduling.

A few discussed money.

I enlarged one photograph and noticed something in the background.

A document on the hotel desk.

I couldn't read it clearly, but the logo appeared to match the company name on the investment paperwork.

My heart began beating faster.

I checked the date.

The photograph had been taken shortly after one of the transfers from our joint savings.

I opened another image.

This one showed Blake sitting beside Harper at a restaurant.

A folder lay between them.

I zoomed in.

The same logo.

The same company.

I sat back in my chair.

The affair and the investment might not have been separate secrets after all.

I searched through the saved messages.

At first, I found nothing.

Then I came across a conversation in which Harper had asked Blake whether everything was ready.

His response was brief.

“Almost. Just need to get her through the next few months.””

I stared at the sentence.

Get her through the next few months.

At the time, I had been approaching the later stages of my pregnancy.

What had he meant?

I scrolled further.

Harper had replied:

“And after the baby?””

Blake's answer had been:

“Then we can finally do this properly.””

My hands began to shake.

I read the exchange again.

Then a third time.

The words didn't tell me exactly what they had planned.

But they confirmed that the two of them had been discussing a future that extended beyond the affair.

I took screenshots and saved them separately.

Then I found another message.

Harper had written:

“What if she finds out before then?””

Blake replied:

“She won't. She trusts me.””

I felt tears burn behind my eyes.

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

He had known I trusted him.

He had counted on it.

My trust hadn't merely failed to protect me.

He had used it as part of his plan.

I called my mother into the room.

She sat beside me as I showed her the messages.

When she finished reading, she covered her mouth.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

I shook my head.

“What does 'do this properly' mean?””

“I don't know.””

“What if there is something else? Something about the baby?””

My mother immediately took my hand.

“Don't jump to conclusions. We need to understand what the messages actually mean.””

I nodded.

She was right.

I couldn't allow fear to fill in the gaps.

But I also couldn't ignore the possibility that Blake and Harper had been planning something that involved more than an affair and a financial arrangement.

I looked at the timestamps again.

One message had been sent the night before a transfer from our account.

Another appeared shortly before Harper signed the investment paperwork.

The sequence was too specific to dismiss.

I sent the relevant records to my attorney and asked what steps I should take next.

Then I did something I hadn't wanted to do.

I called Blake.

He answered immediately.

“Finally.””

I closed my eyes.

“I'm calling because I need answers.””

“Good. We need to talk.””

“Not about the party. Not about your feelings. I want to know what you and Harper were planning.””

There was a pause.

“What are you talking about?””

I read his message aloud.

“'Just need to get her through the next few months.'' Then Harper asked, 'And after the baby?'' You told her you could finally do this properly.””

Silence.

I waited.

“Blake?””

He exhaled sharply.

“Those messages are being taken out of context.””

“Then give me the context.””

“It was a private conversation.””

“You were discussing me.””

“I was talking about our situation.””

“What situation?””

“Our marriage!””

“Then why did you tell her I wouldn't find out because I trusted you?””

He didn't answer.

I could hear him moving around.

Finally, he said, “I knew you would react badly if you found out about the affair.””

“That doesn't explain the messages.””

“I was trying to avoid hurting you during the pregnancy.””

I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.

“You thought hiding everything until after the baby arrived would somehow make it less painful?””

“I didn't know what else to do.””

“You could have told the truth.””

He went quiet.

Then his voice changed.

“Harper wasn't supposed to show you those messages.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She wasn't supposed to get involved in the financial arrangements.””

I stared at my phone.

“Then why was she involved?””

He sighed.

“I trusted her to help me.””

“With what?””

He didn't answer.

I stood up and walked to the window.

“Blake, I am giving you one chance to explain what you were planning. If you keep lying, I'll let the evidence speak for itself.””

He remained silent for several seconds.

Then he said, “I was trying to make sure I could leave without losing everything.””

“By hiding money?””

“Yes.””

“By sleeping with my sister?””

“That's separate.””

I closed my eyes.

Separate.

He still couldn't understand that his choices were connected by the same selfishness.

He wanted the freedom to pursue Harper.

He wanted access to money I had helped save.

He wanted to leave the marriage on his own terms.

And he wanted me to remain unaware until he had arranged everything in his favor.

“Did you plan to leave me before the baby was born?”” I asked.

“No.””

“After?””

He hesitated.

“I thought about it.””

“Did you tell Harper that?””

“Yes.””

“Did you promise her a future together?””

Another pause.

“Yes.””

I gripped the edge of the windowsill.

“Did you use our savings to fund that future?””

He didn't answer.

I ended the call.

For several minutes, I stood by the window, trying to steady my breathing.

Then a new message arrived.

It wasn't from Blake.

It was from Harper.

“I need to tell you something about the investment. Something Blake doesn't know I kept.””

My heart began pounding.

I called her immediately.

She answered on the first ring.

“I'm listening,” I said.

Her voice was trembling.

“I found a copy of an agreement he wanted me to sign.””

“What agreement?””

“He told me it was just a formality. He said it would protect both of us.””

“What did it say?””

“I didn't understand all of it at the time.””

“Harper, what did it say?””

She took a shaky breath.

“It named me as someone responsible for the money if the investment failed.””

I went cold.

“Did you sign it?””

“Yes.””

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

“And Blake?””

“He told me it was nothing to worry about.””

I stared at the messages on my laptop.

The affair.

The transfers.

The company.

The plans for after the baby.

Every secret seemed to lead to another.

“Why are you telling me this now?”” I asked.

Harper began crying.

“Because I finally realized something.””

“What?””

“He wasn't just planning a future with me.””

May you like

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

“He was making sure someone else would take the blame if everything went wrong.””
