Chapter 7: The Signature That Changed Everything

The signature at the bottom of the document belonged to my husband.

But the name printed directly above it belonged to someone I had never expected to see connected to our money.

Harper.

For several seconds, I couldn't make sense of what I was reading.

The backyard was still filled with guests, scattered photographs, and decorations that had been meant to celebrate the arrival of our baby.

My mother stood beside me.

Blake remained several feet away, watching his father with an expression that had shifted from anger to something much closer to panic.

And in my hands was a document that seemed to connect every secret I had uncovered that afternoon.

“Why is Harper's name on this?”” I asked.

My father-in-law lowered his voice.

“Because she was involved in the investment.””

I looked up sharply.

“An investment with my family's money?””

He nodded reluctantly.

“That's what I was afraid of.””

I turned toward my sister.

Harper was crying so hard that she could barely look at me.

“You told me you didn't take our money,” I said.

“I didn't take it from you.””

I stared at her.

“What exactly do you think that means?””

She shook her head.

“Blake told me it was his money. He said you knew about the investment.””

My husband immediately interrupted.

“She knew what she was signing.””

Harper spun toward him.

“You told me it was a temporary arrangement!””

“It was.””

“You said there was no risk!””

“Harper, stop talking.””

“No!”” she screamed.

The sound startled everyone.

For the first time that afternoon, Harper looked less like someone caught in an affair and more like someone realizing that the man she had helped protect might have deceived her, too.

“You said everything was going to work out,” she continued.

“You told me we would have enough money to start over.””

A wave of murmurs passed through the guests.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Start over.

The words sounded painfully familiar.

I had spent months preparing to start a new chapter of my life with my husband and our baby.

Apparently, Blake and Harper had been discussing a different future.

One that required me to remain unaware of what they were doing.

I looked at the document again.

“Dad,” I said to my father-in-law, “please explain exactly what this is.””

He took a breath.

“The company was supposed to purchase property and resell it for a profit. Blake approached me about it several months ago.””

“How many months?””

“About ten.””

Ten months.

Almost the same length of time Blake had admitted to carrying on the affair.

My hands began to tremble.

“Did you know he was using our joint savings?””

“I knew he was looking for money. I didn't know the full amount came from your joint account.””

“Did you know Harper was involved?””

He looked at her.

“I knew her name was on some of the paperwork. I didn't understand why until today.””

Blake shook his head.

“This is being blown out of proportion.””

His father turned toward him.

“Then explain the money.””

“I already told you. I was investing it.””

“Where is it?””

Blake didn't answer.

His father held out his hand.

“Where is the money, son?””

Blake stared at the ground.

That silence frightened me more than any of his previous excuses.

I had hoped the affair was the worst thing I would discover.

Then I had found the missing money.

Now I was learning that my husband had involved my sister in a financial arrangement he had hidden from me, and even his own father appeared to be struggling to understand where the money had gone.

I looked at Harper.

“How much did you know?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know everything.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

She pressed her hands together.

“Blake told me he was planning to leave you eventually. He said he needed money set aside so he could afford a new place and start over.””

My throat tightened.

“And you helped him?””

“He said you had agreed to separate.””

I stared at her.

“Did I ever tell you that?””

“No.””

“Did I ever tell Blake that?””

She looked away.

“No.””

“Then why did you believe him?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I wanted to believe him.””

The answer was so simple that it hurt.

She had wanted to believe him because believing him allowed her to imagine a future in which she could have my husband without having to face what she was doing to me.

I looked toward the house.

Through the open doors, I could see the nursery decorations I had brought downstairs to show my mother earlier that morning.

A small blanket lay folded over the back of a chair.

I had chosen it because the fabric was soft enough for a newborn.

I had imagined Blake holding our child beneath that blanket.

Now I couldn't stop wondering whether he had been looking at those same things while planning how to leave me.

“Did you know he was taking money from our savings?”” I asked Harper.

She hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“How much?””

“I don't know.””

“Harper.””

“He showed me a balance once.””

“What balance?””

“An account he said was for his future.””

I felt sick.

“Did he tell you where the money came from?””

“He said he had saved it.””

I looked at Blake.

He didn't deny it.

Instead, he said, “I was entitled to protect myself.””

“From what?”” I asked.

“A wife who trusted you?””

“From being left with nothing if we divorced.””

I stared at him.

“You were the one planning to leave.””

“That doesn't mean I wanted to lose everything.””

“You mean you wanted to take our savings with you.””

“No.””

“Then why hide it?””

He looked frustrated.

“Because I knew you would react like this.””

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

He had spent nearly a year lying to me, hiding money, and sleeping with my sister.

Yet somehow, in his mind, the problem was that I would have objected if I had known.

My mother stepped forward.

“Blake, listen to yourself.””

He ignored her.

He was watching me.

“You need to understand that I was under pressure.””

“Then you should have talked to me.””

“You wouldn't have understood.””

“You never gave me the chance.””

He looked away.

My father-in-law unfolded another page.

“There is something else,” he said.

Everyone turned toward him.

He pointed to a section near the bottom.

“The company has been asking for additional funds. The original plan didn't work out as expected.””

I looked at the document.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the investment may have lost a significant portion of its value.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“How significant?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know the final figure.””

I turned toward Blake.

“You told me you hadn't lost all the money.””

“I haven't.””

“How much have you lost?””

“I don't know yet.””

“You keep saying that!””

My voice broke.

I pressed a hand against my stomach and took a slow breath.

My mother immediately moved closer.

“Sit down, sweetheart.””

“I need to know what happened.””

“You will,” she said gently.

“But you need to take care of yourself, too.””

I let her guide me to a chair.

For several moments, I concentrated on breathing.

I wasn't going to let Blake's choices put me in danger.

My baby deserved a mother who could think clearly, even when the people she loved had given her every reason to fall apart.

I looked at my father-in-law.

“Is there a way to find out exactly where the money went?””

“Yes.””

“Then I want the records.””

He nodded.

“I'll help you get them.””

Blake stepped forward.

“You don't need to involve lawyers or anyone else.””

I looked at him.

“Why not?””

“Because we can handle this privately.””

“Privately?””

I glanced at the photographs scattered across the lawn.

“You had an affair with my sister. You hid thirty thousand dollars from me. You involved her in an investment and apparently lost money that belonged to our family.””

My voice grew steadier.

“And now you want me to trust you to handle everything privately?””

He didn't answer.

I took out my phone.

“I am going to get independent advice. I am going to find out what happened to our money. And I am going to make sure our child is protected.””

Blake's face hardened.

“You can't just decide everything without me.””

“I just found out that you've been making decisions about my life without me for nearly a year.””

I held his gaze.

“So yes, Blake. I can make decisions about my own future.””

For a moment, I thought he might argue.

Then his father stepped between us.

“She has every right to protect herself.””

Blake looked at him with disbelief.

“Dad, you're taking her side?””

His father shook his head.

“I'm taking the side of the truth.””

That seemed to silence him.

Harper was still standing near the table.

She looked at me as though she wanted to approach, but she didn't move.

Finally, she whispered, “I never wanted you to get hurt like this.””

I stared at her.

“You wanted him. You wanted the money. You wanted the future he promised you.””

My voice softened, but the words remained firm.

“You just didn't want to pay the price for getting those things.””

She began to cry again.

I turned away.

There was nothing left I could say to make her understand.

The guests began leaving quietly.

Some hugged me.

Others simply offered sympathetic looks before walking toward their cars.

The party was over.

The balloons had never appeared.

The cake remained untouched.

The little gifts sat unopened on the tables.

And the giant box that had been meant to reveal my baby's gender was surrounded by evidence of everything my husband and sister had hidden.

As the last guests departed, my father-in-law approached me again.

“I owe you an apology,” he said.

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For believing my son would fix this before it reached you.””

I swallowed.

“Did you know about the affair?””

“No.””

His answer came without hesitation.

“I knew about the investment. I didn't know about the relationship or the full extent of the money involved.””

I wanted to believe him.

But I had learned that afternoon that trust should never replace evidence.

“Please send me everything you have,” I said.

“Every document. Every message related to that company.””

“I will.””

He hesitated.

“There is one more thing you should know.””

My heart sank.

“What now?””

He glanced toward Blake, who was standing near the patio with his arms crossed.

“The company wasn't the only place your husband moved money.””

I felt my fingers go cold.

“Where else?””

His father lowered his voice.

“Before the investment, Blake made a transfer that I couldn't explain. I thought it was a personal expense, but now I'm not sure.””

“Do you know where it went?””

He shook his head.

“Not yet.””

I looked at my husband.

He was staring at us.

When our eyes met, he looked away.

And for the first time, I understood that I wasn't simply trying to uncover an affair or recover our savings.

I was trying to discover how much of my life had been built on decisions I had never been allowed to question.

May you like

That evening, I would begin checking every record I could access.

And what I found next would force me to reconsider not only my marriage, but the future I had planned for my child.
