Chapter 4: The Secret Behind His Confession

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the pounding of my own heart.

The photographs lay scattered across the grass.

Blake stood beside me, his fingers still wrapped around my wrist.

Harper hadn't moved.

My mother was staring at the picture closest to her feet, her face drained of color.

Around us, the guests whispered in disbelief.

Someone asked whether the photographs were real.

Someone else told them to be quiet.

I could barely process any of it because Blake's words kept replaying in my head.

“You have no idea how long this has actually been going on.””

I slowly turned toward him.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at Harper.

It was a quick glance, but I caught it.

He wasn't looking at her like a man who had been caught cheating.

He was looking at her like someone who needed to know whether she was about to betray him, too.

Harper shook her head almost imperceptibly.

That tiny movement made my stomach twist.

They were communicating without speaking.

Even now, with their secret spread across the lawn, they were still trying to protect something.

“Blake,” I said, pulling my wrist free.

“I asked you a question.””

He rubbed his face.

“Not here.””

I let out a short, humorless laugh.

“Not here? You mean not in front of the people who have spent the last several minutes looking at photographs of you and my sister together?””

His jaw tightened.

“This is a private matter between us.””

“Then you should have kept your affair private.””

A few people gasped.

My mother finally lifted her head.

“Harper.””

Her voice was quiet, but it cut through the murmuring crowd.

“Tell me those pictures aren't real.””

Harper's lips parted.

“Mom, I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

Harper glanced at Blake again.

My mother saw it.

Her expression changed.

I had never seen my mother look at either of us that way before.

She looked less like an angry parent and more like someone watching a familiar house collapse, realizing the cracks had been there for years.

“Don't look at him,” she said.

“Look at me.””

Harper's eyes filled with tears.

“Mom, please.””

“Did you sleep with your sister's husband?””

The question hung over the backyard.

Nobody moved.

Harper looked down.

That was all the answer my mother needed.

She covered her mouth.

I wanted to comfort her.

Despite everything, I wanted to put my arms around my mother and tell her that none of this was her fault.

But I couldn't move.

I was still trying to understand how the people I loved most had managed to create a world in which my humiliation was the price of their happiness.

Blake stepped forward.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

My uncle immediately turned toward him.

“Calm down? You were sleeping with your wife's sister!””

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?”” I repeated.

Blake looked at me.

“I know how this looks.””

“How it looks?””

My voice broke, and I hated that it did.

“You have been meeting my sister in hotel rooms while I've been carrying your child. You have been lying to my face. You have been kissing me goodbye and telling me you love me.””

I pointed toward the photographs.

“And you want to talk about how this looks?””

Blake lowered his voice.

“Please. Think about the baby.””

The words struck me harder than I expected.

Not because they were cruel on their own, but because he had chosen to use our child as a shield.

I stepped away from him.

“Don't you dare use our baby to silence me.””

He stared at me.

For the first time that afternoon, he seemed uncertain.

Then Harper suddenly began crying.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

I turned toward her.

She wiped her cheeks with both hands.

“I swear, I never wanted to hurt you.””

I stared at my sister, remembering the night she had promised to keep the baby's gender a secret.

Remembering her excitement over the party.

Remembering how she had asked whether Blake was coming home early.

“Then why did you keep doing it?”” I asked.

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“You don't know?””

“I tried to stop.””

“When?””

She looked away.

I took a breath.

“Was it before or after you sent him those messages about missing him?””

Her face crumpled.

I had included those messages in the box.

She knew I had seen them.

“Before or after the hotel photographs?”” I continued.

“Before or after you stood in my kitchen and told me how excited you were about becoming an aunt?””

“Please stop.””

“No. You don't get to tell me when I can stop asking questions.””

My mother moved toward Harper, then stopped halfway.

I could see the conflict in her face.

She was her daughter, too.

But she was also the mother of the woman Harper had betrayed.

“I raised you better than this,” she whispered.

Harper began sobbing harder.

Blake looked around at the guests.

“Can we please take this inside?””

Nobody answered him.

Then my father-in-law, who had been standing near the patio, spoke for the first time.

“Blake, tell me something.””

Blake turned.

“How long?””

My husband swallowed.

“It's complicated.””

“I'm not asking for your feelings. I'm asking how long you've been betraying your wife.””

Blake looked down at the photographs.

Then he said something that made the whispers stop.

“Almost a year.””

A year.

I felt the words settle inside me.

My pregnancy had lasted only a fraction of that time.

The affair had begun long before I knew our child existed.

I thought about all the evenings I had spent waiting for him to come home.

All the times I had defended him when someone suggested he worked too much.

All the birthdays, anniversaries, and quiet mornings when I had believed we were happy.

Almost a year.

My knees weakened.

I reached for the edge of the table.

My mother hurried toward me.

“Sweetheart?””

“I'm okay,” I whispered.

But I wasn't.

I had prepared myself for betrayal.

I hadn't prepared myself for the realization that nearly every recent memory of my marriage had been contaminated by a lie.

Blake reached toward me.

I stepped back.

“Don't touch me.””

He froze.

Harper stood several feet away, trembling.

Then she whispered, “It started before you got pregnant.””

I turned toward her.

“I know.””

“No,” she said quickly.

“You don't understand.””

Blake's expression sharpened.

“Harper, stop talking.””

That was the moment I knew there was something else.

Something neither of them had planned to reveal in front of our families.

Harper looked at him, frightened.

He shook his head.

She looked at me.

And I realized that whatever she was about to say mattered enough for Blake to be terrified of hearing it.

“Tell me,” I said.

Blake stepped between us.

“That's enough.””

My father-in-law caught his arm.

“Let her speak.””

For a moment, the two men stared at each other.

Then Blake pulled away.

Harper wiped her face.

“The affair wasn't the only thing we kept from you.””

My heart began pounding again.

“What else?””

She looked toward the house.

Then toward the guests.

Finally, she turned back to me.

“Blake told me you would never find out because he had already made plans for what would happen after the baby was born.””

I felt cold all over.

“What plans?””

Harper opened her mouth.

Blake lunged forward.

“Don't you dare!””

My mother screamed.

Several guests rushed toward us.

And as Blake struggled to pull himself away from the people holding him back, Harper finally said the words that would change the meaning of every photograph in that box.

“He wasn't planning to leave you immediately,” she whispered.

“He was planning to make sure you couldn't leave him.””
