Chapter 5: The Plan They Made Behind My Back

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood her.

“He was planning to do what?””

Harper's eyes filled with fresh tears.

Blake stood several feet away, breathing heavily.

My father-in-law still had a hand on his shoulder.

The guests had stopped whispering.

Even the children who had been playing near the patio had gone quiet.

Harper swallowed.

“He said everything would be easier after the baby was born.””

I stared at her.

“Easier for whom?””

She looked down.

“For him.””

A strange calm settled over me.

It was the kind of calm that comes when fear becomes too large to understand all at once.

“Explain.””

Blake shook his head.

“She doesn't know what she's talking about.””

Harper flinched.

I turned toward him.

“You've had plenty of opportunities to tell me the truth. You chose not to. Now you can be quiet.””

His mouth tightened.

I had never spoken to my husband like that before.

Perhaps he hadn't expected me to.

Perhaps he had spent so long believing I would always give him another chance that he had forgotten I was capable of closing a door.

I turned back to Harper.

“What did he tell you?””

She wrapped her arms around herself.

“He said he was tired of pretending everything was perfect. He said your marriage had been falling apart for a long time.””

I stared at her in disbelief.

“Falling apart?””

“He told me you were unhappy.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

“Did you ever ask me?””

She didn't answer.

“Did you ever call me and ask whether my marriage was falling apart? Did you ever ask whether I was unhappy?””

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

“No.””

“Because you knew I wasn't.””

She looked away.

I remembered the weekends Blake and I had spent planning the nursery.

The evenings he had rubbed my feet when pregnancy made them ache.

The way he had laughed when we argued over baby names.

I wasn't claiming our marriage had been perfect.

We had disagreements.

We had stressful days.

We had moments when work, family obligations, and ordinary life made us tired.

But I had never believed our relationship was beyond repair.

And if Blake had been unhappy, he could have told me.

Instead, he had taken my sister into his bed and created a version of our marriage that suited his needs.

“What happened after you started seeing each other?”” I asked.

Harper hesitated.

“He said he needed time to figure things out.””

“How convenient.””

“He told me he loved me.””

My stomach tightened.

I had expected the affair.

I had expected the lies.

But hearing my sister say those words aloud made the betrayal feel horribly intimate.

She hadn't merely wanted attention.

She had believed she could take my husband and keep her place in my life.

“And what did you tell him?”” I asked.

She pressed her lips together.

“I believed him.””

I looked at her for a long time.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask since discovering the messages.

“Did you ever think about me?””

Harper's shoulders began to shake.

“Yes.””

“When?””

She wiped her face.

“Sometimes, when I saw you with him.””

I felt something inside me crack.

She had watched us together.

She had watched me smile at him.

She had watched me prepare for motherhood.

And she had known.

“You saw me happy,” I said slowly.

“And you knew what you were doing.””

“I didn't know how to stop.””

“You knew how to stop every time you left his hotel room. You knew how to stop every time you picked up your phone. You knew how to stop when you came into my house.””

Harper began crying harder.

I didn't raise my voice.

I didn't need to.

“You had a thousand chances to stop.””

Blake suddenly interrupted.

“This is ridiculous. You're making it sound like we planned some elaborate conspiracy.””

I turned toward him.

“Then explain what she means about making sure I couldn't leave you.””

He looked at Harper.

She immediately lowered her eyes.

There it was again.

That silent exchange.

That instinctive understanding between two people who had spent months protecting each other from me.

“Blake,” I said.

“Look at me.””

He finally did.

“What were you planning?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I was trying to figure out how to handle the situation.””

“What situation?””

“Our marriage. The baby. Everything.””

“You mean the consequences of your affair?””

“That's not fair.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Fair?””

He stepped closer.

“I knew things were going to change when the baby arrived. I was under pressure. I wasn't thinking clearly.””

I stared at him.

“You weren't thinking clearly for almost a year?””

He didn't answer.

My father-in-law released his shoulder.

“Son, you need to tell the truth now.””

Blake looked exhausted.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that he couldn't control the room simply by speaking with confidence.

He took a breath.

“I had planned to talk to you after the baby was born.””

“About what?””

“About separating.””

The word landed heavily.

I waited.

He continued.

“I didn't know how to tell you before. You were pregnant. I didn't want to cause you stress.””

I looked at him in disbelief.

“You didn't want to cause me stress?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By sleeping with my sister?””

He closed his eyes.

“That's not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

He had no answer.

I could hear the wind moving through the decorations.

One of the pink ribbons had come loose and was dragging across the grass.

It seemed absurd that the world could continue looking so ordinary when mine had just been torn apart.

I took a slow breath.

“Harper said you were planning to make sure I couldn't leave you. What does that mean?””

Blake's face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

He wasn't confused.

He was afraid.

“I don't know why she said that.””

Harper lifted her head.

“You told me you had everything figured out.””

Blake's voice rose.

“I said I was trying to figure things out!””

“You said she would have no choice.””

The entire backyard seemed to stop breathing.

I felt my hands begin to tremble.

“No choice about what?””

Harper looked at me.

“He said that once the baby arrived, you would have to depend on him. He said you wouldn't be able to walk away easily.””

I stared at my husband.

He shook his head.

“She is twisting my words.””

“Then tell me what you meant.””

“I meant that we would have responsibilities.””

“Responsibilities don't mean I lose my freedom.””

“I never said that.””

Harper spoke again.

“You said she would be too busy with the baby to fight you.””

Blake's face flushed.

“Enough!””

His shout startled several people.

My mother stepped between him and Harper.

“Don't you raise your voice at her.””

Blake looked around at the crowd, realizing how he sounded.

Then he lowered his voice.

“I was talking about divorce. That's all.””

“Then why are you so afraid of what Harper is saying?”” I asked.

He stared at me.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, “Because you're not understanding the whole story.””

I almost laughed.

“The whole story? I've spent eight years believing I knew my husband. I've spent months preparing for our child. And I've just discovered that you and my sister have been lying to me for nearly a year.””

I gestured toward the photographs.

“What part of the story am I missing?””

Blake looked toward the house again.

It was a small movement, but I noticed it.

He seemed to be calculating something.

Then he finally spoke.

“There were financial things you didn't know about.””

My heart sank.

“What financial things?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“I made some decisions about our money.””

“What decisions?””

“I was going to explain everything.””

“When?””

“After the baby was born.””

I stared at him.

The words sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

After the baby was born.

Everything would be easier after the baby was born.

I had thought he meant divorce.

But now I wondered whether the baby had been part of a plan I hadn't even begun to understand.

“Did you use our money to pay for those hotel rooms?”” I asked.

Blake looked away.

That was answer enough.

“Did you use our joint account?””

He didn't speak.

I felt sick.

The savings we had built together were supposed to help us raise our child.

We had discussed a nursery budget, medical expenses, and the possibility of buying a larger home someday.

I had believed we were working toward those goals together.

“How much?”” I whispered.

Blake shook his head.

“It's not what you think.””

“How much money did you spend on this affair?””

He opened his mouth, then closed it again.

Harper looked at me with a mixture of guilt and fear.

And suddenly, I understood why Blake had been so desperate to stop her from speaking.

The affair was only the first betrayal.

May you like

The money was another.

But when I asked what he had done with our savings, his answer revealed that the truth was even more disturbing than I had imagined.
