Chapter 6: The Money Missing From Our Future

“How much money did you take from our savings, Blake?””

My voice sounded distant.

I was standing in the backyard where we had planned to celebrate our baby, surrounded by people who had just watched my marriage collapse.

Yet all I could think about was the money.

Not because money mattered more than the betrayal.

Because money was supposed to represent the future we had built together.

The nursery.

The hospital bills.

The emergency fund we had promised never to touch unless we truly needed it.

The home we hoped to buy once our child was older.

Every dollar had been part of a promise.

Now I was wondering whether that promise had ever meant anything to him.

Blake looked toward the guests.

“Can we stop discussing this in front of everyone?””

“No.””

His eyebrows drew together.

“What?””

“You wanted to keep everything secret. You had months to tell me the truth privately. You chose not to. I'm done protecting you from the consequences of your own decisions.””

He glanced at my mother.

Then at his father.

Finally, he looked at me.

“I didn't steal anything.””

“Then tell me where the money went.””

He hesitated.

“I moved some of it.””

“Where?””

“Into another account.””

My stomach tightened.

“An account I don't know about?””

He rubbed his jaw.

“It was temporary.””

“How much?””

He didn't answer.

I took a step toward him.

“How much, Blake?””

“Thirty thousand dollars.””

The number seemed to hang in the air.

Thirty thousand dollars.

I repeated it silently, trying to make it mean something other than what it meant.

Our savings had been the result of years of careful decisions.

We weren't wealthy.

We had worked hard for what we had.

We had skipped expensive vacations.

We had delayed buying new furniture.

I had saved part of every paycheck because I wanted our child to grow up with security.

And Blake had moved thirty thousand dollars without telling me.

“Where is it now?”” I asked.

“Some of it is still there.””

“Some?””

He looked down.

I felt my pulse quicken.

“What does that mean?””

“I had expenses.””

“What expenses?””

He looked toward Harper.

She immediately began crying again.

I turned to her.

“Did he spend our money on you?””

“No,” she whispered.

“Then why are you looking at him?””

“I don't know.””

“Harper, I need the truth.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“He paid for some things.””

“What things?””

“Hotels. Dinners. Other stuff.””

The world seemed to tilt again.

I had known about the hotel rooms.

I had known about the gifts and affectionate messages.

But hearing that our family savings had helped fund their secret relationship made me feel physically ill.

I remembered the times I had told Blake we should be careful with spending.

I remembered him agreeing.

I remembered him saying that every dollar mattered now that we were going to be parents.

Apparently, every dollar mattered except the ones he wanted to spend on my sister.

My father-in-law shook his head slowly.

“Blake, what have you done?””

Blake's face hardened.

“Dad, stay out of this.””

“No. You made this everyone's business when you decided to humiliate your pregnant wife.””

“I'm handling it.””

“You haven't handled anything.””

Blake looked furious.

For a moment, I thought he might argue with his father.

Instead, he turned back to me.

“I was going to replace the money.””

“When?””

“Soon.””

“Before or after I discovered you were sleeping with Harper?””

He looked away.

I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You keep promising that everything would have been explained later. After the baby was born. After you figured things out. After you had time to put everything back.””

I shook my head.

“How many more things were you planning to tell me later?””

He didn't answer.

I reached for my phone.

Blake immediately straightened.

“What are you doing?””

“Checking our accounts.””

“Now?””

“Yes, now.””

He stepped toward me.

“There's no need to make a scene.””

I stared at him.

“You think this is about making a scene?””

He held out his hand.

“Give me the phone. I'll show you the statements later.””

I pulled it closer to my chest.

“No.””

His expression changed.

“I'm your husband.””

“And I'm the person whose money you moved without permission.””

He looked as though he wanted to argue.

Then he glanced around at the people watching us and stepped back.

I opened the banking app.

My fingers trembled as I signed in.

The balance appeared.

I stared at it.

Then I checked the transaction history.

There were transfers I recognized.

There were routine payments for bills and household expenses.

And there were several larger withdrawals that didn't match anything I remembered discussing with Blake.

I opened each transaction.

My throat tightened.

The amounts were smaller than the thirty thousand dollars he had admitted moving, but together they painted a troubling picture.

Some transfers had gone to an account with a name I didn't recognize.

Others were payments I couldn't immediately identify.

I scrolled further.

Then I found a transfer dated several months earlier.

I looked at Blake.

“What is this?””

He glanced at the screen.

His face went pale.

“That's nothing.””

“Nothing?””

“It's a business-related expense.””

“What business?””

He didn't answer.

I read the description again.

It was a payment to a company I had never heard him mention.

I looked up.

“Why would our joint savings be paying a company I've never heard of?””

Blake took a breath.

“I was looking into an investment.””

“What investment?””

“It's complicated.””

“Then explain it.””

He glanced at his father.

His father stared back, visibly disappointed.

Blake lowered his voice.

“I was trying to make more money for the family.””

I stared at him.

“You took money from our savings to invest in something without telling me?””

“I thought it was a good opportunity.””

“Did you lose the money?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I studied his face.

“Blake.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Not all of it.””

My chest tightened.

“How much did you lose?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know the exact amount.””

“You don't know?””

“I was going to sort it out.””

I closed my eyes.

I could barely believe what I was hearing.

The affair had been a betrayal of our marriage.

The secret transfers were a betrayal of our partnership.

But the idea that he had risked our family's financial security without telling me made something inside me go cold.

Our child wasn't even born yet, and Blake had already gambled with the money meant to protect that child.

My mother approached and placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Sweetheart, you don't have to figure everything out right now.””

I nodded, grateful for her presence.

Then she turned toward Blake.

“You need to leave her alone.””

Blake looked incredulous.

“She's my wife.””

“And she's carrying your child. That should have meant something to you.””

He opened his mouth.

My mother raised a hand.

“Don't.””

For once, Blake had nothing to say.

I returned to the transaction history.

There was one more detail I couldn't ignore.

The account receiving the transfers had been opened recently.

I checked the dates.

The first transfer had occurred shortly after the affair began.

The second came a few weeks later.

Then another.

The pattern was unmistakable.

I looked at Blake.

“Were you planning to move more money?””

He swallowed.

“No.””

“Then why did you open another account?””

“I wanted somewhere to keep the investment funds separate.””

“Separate from me?””

“That's not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

He stared at me.

I waited.

Finally, he said, “I needed to make sure I had options.””

The words sent a chill through me.

“Options for what?””

He didn't answer.

Harper suddenly spoke from behind him.

“You told me she wouldn't be able to touch it.””

Blake spun around.

“Shut up!””

Harper recoiled.

My father-in-law stepped between them.

“That's enough, Blake.””

But I was no longer listening to their argument.

I was staring at Harper.

“What did you just say?””

She covered her mouth.

Blake looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Pure fear.

“Nothing,” he said quickly.

“She doesn't understand what she's talking about.””

I turned toward my sister.

“Harper, look at me.””

She slowly lowered her hand.

“What did Blake tell you about the money?””

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

“He said he was protecting himself in case you tried to take everything in a divorce.””

I stared at my husband.

The backyard seemed to grow strangely quiet again.

Blake had not only been planning for a separation.

He had been moving our savings, hiding financial information, and discussing his plans with my sister while leaving me to believe we were preparing for our child's future together.

I thought about the nursery.

The hospital appointments.

The little clothes folded in the dresser.

I had been preparing to welcome a baby into a stable home.

Blake had been preparing for a fight I didn't even know we were having.

“Did you tell Harper you were going to leave me with nothing?”” I asked.

“No.””

“Did you tell her you were moving money so I couldn't access it?””

“I was protecting myself.””

“From your pregnant wife?””

“From a divorce!””

His voice echoed across the yard.

Then he seemed to realize what he had admitted.

He lowered his head.

Nobody spoke.

I felt my baby move beneath my palm.

That small movement brought me back to myself.

I couldn't afford to collapse.

Not now.

Not when I had a child depending on me to think clearly.

I took a screenshot of the account history and sent it to myself.

Then I saved the transaction details.

Blake watched me.

“What are you doing?””

“Making sure I have the records.””

“You're acting like I'm some kind of criminal.””

I met his eyes.

“I'm acting like a woman who has just discovered that her husband has been hiding money while sleeping with her sister.””

He looked away.

For the first time, I understood that I couldn't rely on his promises anymore.

If I wanted to protect myself and my baby, I needed facts.

I needed independent advice.

And I needed to know exactly what had happened to the money we had saved together.

My father-in-law approached me quietly.

“I don't know what my son has done,” he said, “but you deserve to know the truth.””

I looked at him.

“Do you know anything about that company?””

He hesitated.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

His eyes shifted toward Blake.

Then back to me.

“I might know something.””

My heart began pounding.

“What?””

He glanced around at the guests, then lowered his voice.

“Not here. There are things about that investment you need to understand before you make any decisions.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell me earlier?””

His face tightened with regret.

“Because I thought Blake would fix it before anyone got hurt.””

I felt the ground shift beneath me.

Another person had known something.

Another person had chosen silence.

And as my father-in-law reached into his jacket pocket, he pulled out a folded document bearing the name of the company I had just seen on my bank statement.

“Your husband wasn't the only person involved,” he whispered.

I unfolded the paper.

May you like

The first line contained a name I recognized immediately.

And beneath it was a signature that made me realize the financial betrayal might reach far beyond my marriage.
