Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew Everything
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
Not because I called them.
Because Derek did.
That alone surprised me.
The old Derek would have tried to control the situation.
He would have hidden information.
He would have told me what I needed to know and nothing more.
This time, he handed the detective the phone.
Everything.
No excuses.
No editing.
Detective Morgan looked through the messages while we sat in the living room.
“Where did this phone come from?””
“I don’t know,” Derek said.
The detective looked at me.
“And you?””
I shook my head.
“It was hidden in my daughter’s nursery.””
His expression changed.
“Your daughter’s nursery?””
“Yes.””
He wrote something down.
Then he looked at Derek.
“You understand how serious this is?””
Derek nodded.
“Yes.””
The detective leaned forward.
“Then why does it feel like you’re leaving something out?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone was.
Even me.
The next morning, Detective Morgan called.
He asked me to come to the station.
Alone.
I almost refused.
But something told me I needed to hear whatever he had found.
When I arrived, he placed a file on the table.
“This belongs to your mother.””
I stared at it.
“How?””
“It was recovered from a storage unit registered under a false name.””
I opened the file.
Inside were medical records.
Photographs.
Emails.
And one name repeated over and over.
Vanessa Reed.
I felt my stomach drop.
“Vanessa?””
Detective Morgan nodded.
“She worked at the clinic.””
The woman who walked into my home.
The woman who acted like she knew Derek better than I did.
The woman who carried documents with my name on them.
“She was involved?””
“We’re not sure yet.””
I turned the page.
A photo fell out.
It showed Vanessa standing beside my mother.
Both of them smiling.
The date was written underneath.
Three years before my wedding.
I stared at it.
“Why would my mother trust her?””
Detective Morgan didn’t answer.
Instead, he asked:
“Do you know what happened to your mother the night she died?””
My throat tightened.
“She had a car accident.””
“That’s what the report says.””
I looked up.
“What are you saying?””
He tapped the file.
“Your mother’s brakes were tampered with.””
The room went silent.
I felt like I had been punched.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“My mother died because of this?””
Detective Morgan looked at me.
“Claire, your mother spent the last year of her life trying to expose people who had a lot to lose.””
I covered my mouth.
The grief I had buried for years suddenly came back.
But this time, it had a face.
A reason.
A name.
When I returned home, Derek was waiting.
He stood when he saw me.
“What happened?””
I dropped the file on the table.
“My mother was murdered.””
His face changed.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t get to say sorry like that fixes anything.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“Did you know?””
His silence answered.
My chest tightened.
“Derek.””
“I suspected.””
I stepped back.
“You suspected?””
“I didn’t have proof.””
“You knew something happened to her and you let me believe it was an accident?””
“I was trying to find who did it.””
“And I was your wife.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t know.””
The anger came out.
Years of it.
“You decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””
His eyes filled.
“You were pregnant.””
“I wasn’t pregnant for five years.””
He looked away.
And that was the moment I realized something.
Derek wasn’t just hiding things from me.
He had been protecting a secret.
And maybe protecting himself.
“Who else knew?””
He hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Vanessa.””
The next day, Vanessa came to my house.
But she wasn’t arrogant this time.
She looked scared.
Rachel opened the door.
“What do you want?””
Vanessa looked past her.
“At Claire.””
I walked into the hallway.
“What?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I need to tell you the truth before Derek does.””
I almost laughed.
“You’re worried about Derek lying?””
She swallowed.
“No.””
She looked at Emma.
“I’m worried about what happens when you find out why your daughter was chosen.””
My body went still.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa reached into her bag.
Pulled out a folder.
And placed it on the table.
“I was there the night Lily died.””
Derek appeared behind me.
“Vanessa.””
She turned toward him.
“I’m sorry.””
Then she looked at me.
“Claire, your daughter isn’t connected to this because of Derek.””
My heart raced.
“Then why?””
Vanessa opened the folder.
Inside was a birth record.
Not Emma’s.
Someone else’s.
Someone who shared my last name.
Someone born five years earlier.
May you like
Vanessa whispered:
“Because your daughter was never the only child your mother tried to protect.””
