Chapter 6: The Child Who Wasn’t Supposed to Exist
The photograph slipped from my fingers and landed on the nursery floor.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
I couldn’t even hear the rain tapping against the window.
Everything narrowed down to one impossible image.
Emma.
My daughter.
A newborn baby.
Five years before she was born.
Rachel picked up the photograph carefully.
Her face changed as she studied it.
“Claire…”
I looked at her.
“Tell me I’m losing my mind.””
She didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
The door behind us opened.
Derek walked in carrying a bag of groceries.
Then he saw our faces.
Then he saw the picture in Rachel’s hand.
The groceries fell.
The sound of a glass bottle breaking on the floor echoed through the house.
“What did you find?””
I stood up slowly.
“You tell me.””
His eyes moved to the photograph.
And all the color disappeared from his face.
“Where did you get that?””
I laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“That’s your first question?””
“Claire—”
“No.””
I held up my hand.
“No more.””
My voice shook.
But I didn’t care.
“I am done being the last person to know what is happening in my own life.””
Derek looked toward the nursery.
“I can explain.””
“You always can.””
Those words hurt him.
Good.
Because for years, his explanations had been the chains keeping me in place.
Rachel stepped closer.
“What is going on?””
Derek closed his eyes.
“I thought this was over.””
I stared at him.
“What was over?””
He didn’t answer.
I walked toward him.
“What does this picture mean?””
His silence stretched.
Then finally:
“Emma was part of something that happened before you knew me.””
My heart pounded.
“She’s my daughter.””
“I know.””
“Then why is there a picture of her from before she was born?””
Derek looked broken.
“Because that isn’t Emma.””
I froze.
“What?””
He took the photograph from my hand.
His fingers were trembling.
“That baby is Lily.””
The name meant nothing.
And somehow, that terrified me.
“Who is Lily?””
Derek sat down.
For the first time since I met him, he looked like a man carrying a weight too heavy to hold.
“My sister.””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
“You don’t have a sister.””
“I did.””
My anger faded into confusion.
“Derek…”
“She died.””
“When?””
He looked at the picture.
“Five years ago.””
I felt sick.
Five years ago.
The same time everything in my life changed.
The same time my mother died.
The same time Derek suddenly appeared in my life.
The same time he became obsessed with protecting me.
Rachel whispered:
“What happened to her?””
Derek looked at the floor.
“She was the reason I found your mother’s evidence.””
I crossed my arms.
“Start from the beginning.””
He hesitated.
Then he spoke.
“My father wasn’t just moving illegal money. He was covering up medical fraud.””
Thomas, who had been standing quietly near the doorway, stepped forward.
“Derek.””
“No.””
Derek looked at him.
“No more lies.””
Thomas went silent.
Derek continued.
“My father funded an experimental medical program. A private clinic. They tested treatments without proper approval.””
My stomach twisted.
“And Lily?””
Derek swallowed.
“She was one of the patients.””
I looked at Emma’s crib.
“She was a baby?””
“Yes.””
My hands became cold.
“She died because of him?””
Derek nodded.
“And your mother found out.””
The room felt impossible.
Too many secrets.
Too much pain.
“Why did my mother get involved?””
“Because she couldn’t ignore it.””
A tear fell down Derek’s face.
“She promised Lily she would expose the truth.””
I stared at him.
“Your sister’s last wish was justice?””
“Yes.””
“And then you married me.””
Derek looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His answer came quietly.
“Because your mother left one final message before she died.””
My heart stopped.
“What message?””
He reached into his pocket.
Pulled out an old folded piece of paper.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My mother’s.
He handed it to me.
The note had only one sentence.
*Protect Claire. She is the only person who can finish what I started.*
I looked up.
“You knew this entire time?””
Derek nodded.
“I knew your mother chose me because she believed I would keep you safe.””
I looked at the man who abandoned me in labor.
The man who had failed me in the moment I needed him most.
And somehow, I also saw the man who had spent five years carrying a secret alone.
Both things were true.
And that made it harder.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes filled.
“Because every person who knew the truth ended up hurt.””
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
It came from the nursery.
Rachel looked toward Emma’s crib.
“No one’s phone is in there.””
I walked slowly into the room.
The sound came from inside the wooden cabinet.
I opened it.
Inside was an old phone.
Not mine.
Not Derek’s.
The screen was already lit.
One new message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
The message contained only one line.
*You found Lily. Now find out who killed her.*
May you like
Then another message appeared.
*Because it wasn’t Derek’s father.*
