Chapter 5: The Secret Behind My Daughter’s Name
I didn’t sleep.
I couldn’t.
Every answer created another question.
By sunrise, my entire marriage felt like a house built on broken glass.
I sat at the kitchen table with Emma sleeping against my chest.
Derek stood across from me.
For once, he wasn’t looking for an escape.
“You owe me the truth.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“No more protecting me.””
“I know.””
“No more deciding what I can handle.””
His eyes lowered.
“I know.””
The repetition made me angry.
Because knowing was easy.
Changing was harder.
Thomas sat beside Rachel.
He looked older than he had the night before.
Like carrying the truth had aged him.
I held up the photograph.
“Explain.””
Thomas took a breath.
“Your mother discovered my company was being used to move illegal money.””
I listened.
“She found proof. She planned to expose everyone involved.””
“And?””
“And someone tried to stop her.””
My stomach dropped.
“Was my mother killed?””
Thomas looked away.
That was an answer.
Rachel covered her mouth.
I felt something inside me break.
Derek moved closer.
“Claire…”
I stood.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my mother was in danger.””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I married you because I loved you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Then why did you keep secrets?””
“Because my father threatened you.””
Thomas looked down.
“He told Derek if he spoke, you would become a target.””
I stared at him.
“And the prenuptial agreement?””
Derek’s face changed.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””
“But it did.””
“My father forced me.””
I looked at Thomas.
“Did you?””
He didn’t answer.
That silence told me everything.
Years.
Five years of silence.
Five years of believing I was building a life with someone who was building a prison around me.
Then Derek said something that made me freeze.
“Claire, there’s one more thing.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“The reason I panicked when you went into labor.””
I waited.
“I received a message that morning.””
“From who?””
His face went pale.
“Someone who knew about the investigation.””
The room went quiet.
“What did they say?””
Derek looked at Emma.
Then at me.
“They said if our daughter was born, they would come after her.””
My blood turned cold.
“You’re saying someone threatened my baby?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you leave me?””
The question destroyed him.
Because he had no answer.
Finally, he whispered:
“Because I thought pushing you away would keep you safe.””
I stared at him.
“You abandoned me to protect me?””
“I was wrong.””
“Yes.””
My voice shook.
“You were.””
For the first time, Derek didn’t defend himself.
He simply nodded.
A week later, I filed for separation.
Not because I hated him.
Because I needed to remember who I was without him.
But before I left the house, I found something hidden inside Emma’s nursery.
A small envelope taped beneath the wooden crib.
My name was written on it.
Not Derek’s handwriting.
Not my mother’s.
Someone else’s.
Inside was a single photograph.
And a note.
*Claire, if you want to know why Derek really married you, ask who Emma’s biological father is.*
I dropped the paper.
Because the photograph in my hand was impossible.
It showed Emma.
Newborn.
Five years ago.
And standing beside her was a man I had never seen before.
