Chapter 2: The Box Under the Floorboard
Three days after Emma was born, I came home.
Not to my house.
Not anymore.
At least, that was what it felt like.
The moment Rachel opened the front door, I smelled the familiar scent of lavender candles and coffee.
My old life.
The nursery was down the hallway.
The room I had painted while Derek watched football from the couch.
The room where I folded tiny clothes and imagined family pictures.
Rachel carried Emma inside.
“You don’t have to decide everything today.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
But I did have to decide something.
I couldn’t keep living in a place where I felt like a guest.
Derek wasn’t home.
That surprised me.
For once, I was grateful.
I walked into the kitchen.
The same kitchen.
The same counter.
The same place where my entire marriage had changed.
The fifteen dollars were gone.
But the memory remained.
Rachel watched me.
“You okay?””
I touched the counter.
“No.””
She didn’t tell me I would be.
She didn’t tell me everything happened for a reason.
She simply stood beside me.
And somehow, that helped.
A noise came from upstairs.
We both froze.
Rachel frowned.
“I thought Derek wasn’t home.””
“He isn’t.””
The footsteps grew louder.
Then a voice called out.
“Claire?””
My stomach dropped.
Not Derek.
Someone else.
A woman appeared at the top of the stairs.
She was holding a small wooden box.
And I knew her.
Not personally.
But enough.
Enough to recognize the expensive coat.
Enough to recognize the confidence.
Enough to recognize the woman I had seen in pictures from Derek’s company events.
“Vanessa?””
Her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Annoyance.
“Claire.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
Vanessa looked at her like she was asking a stupid question.
“I work with Derek.””
“Why are you in my house?””
Vanessa glanced around.
Then smiled.
“Actually, I should be asking why you’re here.””
My heart started pounding.
“What does that mean?””
She held up the wooden box.
“This.””
I stared at it.
I knew that box.
It belonged to Derek.
He kept important documents inside.
“Where did you get that?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
“Derek asked me to help organize things.””
My blood ran cold.
“Organize things?””
She opened the box.
Inside were papers.
Photos.
Documents.
And one envelope with my name written across the front.
Claire Bennett.
My hands started shaking.
“Give me that.””
Vanessa pulled it away.
“Derek said you might react emotionally.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“You need to leave.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Believe me, I don’t want to be here.””
She looked at my daughter.
Then back at me.
“He told me you would make everything complicated.””
Something inside me snapped.
“You don’t know me.””
“No,” Vanessa replied.
“But I know Derek.””
She placed the envelope on the table.
Then walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she stopped.
“You should ask your husband why he kept those papers hidden.””
The door closed.
I stared at the envelope.
Rachel whispered:
“Claire…”
I opened it.
Inside was a legal document.
My hands went numb as I read the first line.
*Prenuptial Agreement Addendum.*
I looked at the signature.
Mine.
Except I had never signed it.
I had never seen it.
And at the bottom was the date.
Two months after our wedding.
Rachel looked over my shoulder.
“Claire…”
I turned the page.
And saw the name of the person who had witnessed my signature.
May you like
My mother.
But my mother had been dead for three years.
