Chapter 9: The Last Recording

We ran.

I grabbed Lily from her crib and wrapped her in the blanket.

Daniel stood frozen in the hallway.

“Move!”” I shouted.

He looked at me.

Then at the stairs.

“I can stop them.””

“No.””

“Emily—”

“You're not dying for me.””

He stared.

I hadn't meant to say it.

But something changed in his expression.

He nodded.

“Okay.””

We moved toward the back staircase.

Three men entered through the front door.

One shouted, “Find the girl!””

Daniel stepped into the hallway.

“She's not here.””

I stopped.

“Daniel.””

He turned.

“Go.””

Then he walked downstairs.

I heard a struggle.

A crash.

Someone shouted.

Evelyn pulled me toward the back door.

“Come on.””

We ran into the cold night.

I held Lily against my chest.

She stirred but didn't cry.

We reached the garden.

Police lights appeared at the end of the street.

Detective Brooks had sent officers.

Three men were arrested before they reached the road.

Daniel emerged from the house with blood on his lip.

I stared at him.

He looked at me.

“I didn't know they'd come.””

“Neither did I.””

He lowered his head.

“I’m sorry.””

I couldn't answer.

Evelyn walked out behind him.

She was crying.

“Emily.””

I looked at her.

She held out the brass key.

“Take it.””

I accepted it.

“Where?””

She pointed toward the lake.

“There's a cabin.””

“My mother's?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your father made me swear.””

“Why?””

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of what your mother had discovered.””

Two hours later, Detective Brooks stood with me inside the old cabin.

It smelled like dust, pine, and rain.

My mother had owned it.

All those years.

And I'd never known.

The brass key opened a small metal box beneath the floorboards.

Inside was a cassette tape.

A photograph.

And a letter.

The photograph showed my mother holding me as a baby.

On the back she had written:

*For Emily, when she is old enough to understand.*

My hands trembled.

Detective Brooks pointed at the recorder.

“There's a battery inside.””

I pressed play.

Static.

Then my mother's voice.

My knees nearly gave out.

“Emily, if you're hearing this, something happened to me.””

I covered my mouth.

Her voice was soft.

The same voice I barely remembered.

“I don't know if I'll have the chance to tell you everything.””

Static crackled.

“I need you to know one thing first.””

A pause.

“Your father loved you.””

I started crying.

“But love did not make him brave.””

Detective Brooks looked at me.

My mother's voice continued.

“He made a terrible choice.””

My breathing stopped.

“I discovered that Carter Construction had been hiding defective materials.””

I looked at the detective.

“They weren't alone.””

Her voice shook.

“Your father was involved.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“But he didn't order the sabotage.””

I whispered, “Then who?””

The recording answered.

“Evelyn's brother.””

I closed my eyes.

My mother continued.

“He approached me after I found the records. He offered me money to stay quiet.””

A pause.

“I refused.””

The tape crackled.

“Your father begged me to leave the country.””

“But I couldn't leave without Emily.””

My chest tightened.

“I told him I was going to the police.””

There was silence.

Then my mother's voice became quieter.

“He told me he would come with me.””

I cried harder.

“For the first time in years, I believed him.””

The recording skipped.

Then:

“I was wrong.””

I looked at Detective Brooks.

“Why?””

My mother's voice answered.

“Your father went to Evelyn instead.””

My heart stopped.

“They knew I had copied the evidence.””

A pause.

“They planned to take it from me.””

I heard movement in the recording.

Then my mother whispered:

“Someone is here.””

Static.

A door slammed.

My mother's breathing became rapid.

“Emily is upstairs.””

I froze.

“You're here,” she whispered.

I could barely breathe.

“I can hear you.””

A man's voice appeared faintly in the background.

“Where is the account?””

My mother said nothing.

“Where is it?””

Then another voice.

My father's.

“Stop.””

I covered my mouth.

My father's voice.

Alive.

Terrified.

“She's not giving it to you.””

The other man shouted.

“You knew about this!””

“Yes.””

“And you helped her?””

“Yes.””

A crash.

My mother's voice.

“Run!””

Then my father's voice:

“Emily!””

The recording exploded into static.

Then one final sound.

A gunshot.

I screamed.

Detective Brooks grabbed my shoulder.

The recording continued.

My mother's voice returned, barely audible.

“If Emily survives, she must never know the account exists.””

A pause.

“Because the account contains something more dangerous than money.””

My heart pounded.

“What?”” I whispered.

The tape continued.

“Names.””

Then silence.

My mother's final words were:

“Emily, if they ever try to control you through Lily, activate the trust.””

I stared at the recorder.

She knew.

She had planned for this.

The final sentence came through the speakers.

“And when the trust activates, the account will open.””

The tape clicked off.

Detective Brooks looked at me.

“Emily.””

I couldn't speak.

My phone buzzed.

Robert.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Emily.””

“What happened?””

“The Blackstone account just unlocked.””

I looked at the metal box.

“How much is in it?””

Robert paused.

“Thirty-two million dollars.””

My heart stopped.

“Whose money?””

“Your mother's.””

I closed my eyes.

Then Robert said:

“That isn't the important part.””

“What is?””

“The account has a beneficiary.””

“Who?””

“Lily.””

I looked down at my daughter.

She was sleeping peacefully against my chest.

Robert continued.

“Your mother arranged for Lily to receive everything.””

I whispered:

“Why?””

“Because she knew one day someone would try to take control of you.””

I looked toward Daniel.

He stood outside the cabin.

Broken.

Waiting.

And suddenly I understood.

My mother hadn't left me money.

She had left me a way out.

I walked outside.

Daniel looked at me.

“What did you find?””

I answered honestly.

“The truth.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Emily…”

“You knew about the recording.””

“No.””

“You knew about my mother's account.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Lily was the beneficiary.””

“Yes.””

“And you still tried to control her.””

He lowered his head.

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because I thought if I didn't, Evelyn would kill me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She threatened me.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I said:

“You weren't afraid enough to hurt me.””

He had no answer.

Detective Brooks approached.

“Emily.””

I turned.

“We found something in the cabin.””

“What?””

“A second compartment.””

He held up an envelope.

“Your mother left this for you.””

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

One sentence.

*If Daniel ever chooses you over his family, forgive him—but don't go back.*

I stared at the words.

Then I looked at my husband.

For the first time, I didn't see the man I married.

I saw the frightened boy Evelyn had trained him to become.

And I knew forgiveness wasn't the same as trust.

Behind me, Detective Brooks received a call.

His face changed.

“Emily.””

“What?””

“They found Evelyn's brother.””

“Where?””

He looked at me.

“He's been living under another name for sixteen years.””

“Where?””

Detective Brooks swallowed.

“Inside Carter Construction.””

I stared at him.

“Who is he?””

He handed me the photograph.

I looked at the face.

And my blood went cold.

Because I had seen that man every Christmas.

Every birthday.

At our family table.

He had been standing beside me the entire time.

My mother's killer had never disappeared.

May you like

He had simply changed his name.

And he was still working for Daniel.
