Chapter 4: The Hidden Beneficiary

I couldn't speak.

Lily.

My baby.

Her name sat on a corporate filing worth millions of dollars.

“What does this mean?”” I asked.

Jonathan leaned toward the screen.

“I don't know yet.””

“You're a lawyer.””

“I said I don't know yet.””

His voice was unusually tense.

Robert had joined us by phone.

I put him on speaker.

“Robert,” I said, “Lily is listed as the beneficiary.””

There was silence.

Then:

“Send me the filing.””

Jonathan forwarded it.

Robert opened it.

“Emily…”

“What?””

“This changes everything.””

“How?””

“Your daughter isn't simply a beneficiary.””

I waited.

“She appears to be the ultimate beneficial owner.””

My hands went numb.

“Of what?””

“Carter Family Holdings.””

I stared at Jonathan.

“That's the company that owns the construction company.””

“Yes.””

“So Lily owns Daniel's company?””

“Technically,” Jonathan said, “she owns the controlling structure.””

I shook my head.

“Why would they do that?””

Robert answered.

“Because Lily is a minor.””

I didn't understand.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

“A minor cannot independently exercise control over assets.””

Jonathan's eyes narrowed.

“Someone has to manage them.””

I whispered, “A guardian.””

“Yes.””

My heart began racing.

“Who?””

Jonathan looked at me.

“That's what we need to find out.””

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Where are you?””

His voice wasn't casual anymore.

“At lunch.””

“With who?””

I looked at Jonathan.

“Why?””

“Emily, come home.””

“I'll be home later.””

“Now.””

“No.””

Silence.

Then Daniel said something I'd never heard from him before.

Fear.

“You don't understand what you've done.””

I leaned back.

“What have I done?””

“You activated something you don't understand.””

“Really?””

“Yes.””

“You mean the trust?””

He stopped breathing for a second.

“How do you know about that?””

I smiled without humor.

“Because it's mine.””

“Emily—”

“No. You don't get to tell me what I understand anymore.””

His voice hardened.

“Who have you been talking to?””

“People who knew my father.””

“Stay away from Jonathan Reed.””

My stomach tightened.

“How do you know Jonathan?””

Another silence.

Too long.

Then Daniel said, “Because he destroyed this family.””

“No.””

I looked at Jonathan.

“He tried to protect it.””

“From what?””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“From Evelyn.””

Then the call ended.

I looked at Jonathan.

He was pale.

“What did he mean?””

Jonathan didn't answer.

Robert's voice came through the phone.

“Emily, we need to move quickly.””

“Why?””

“The trust review just triggered another alert.””

“What kind?””

“Guardian designation.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Explain.””

“Someone has attempted to designate a legal guardian over Lily's assets.””

“Who?””

Robert didn't respond.

“Robert.””

He finally said:

“Daniel.””

My chair scraped against the floor.

“He can't.””

“He just did.””

“Can he?””

“Not legally without court approval.””

I breathed again.

Then Robert added:

“But there's another problem.””

“What?””

“The paperwork claims you are financially incompetent.””

I felt the room tilt.

“What?””

“That's the basis for the guardianship request.””

Jonathan slammed his palm against the table.

“Of course.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“That's why they froze your cards.””

I stared at him.

“The cards weren't about teaching me a lesson.””

“No.””

Jonathan's voice was grim.

“They needed a record.””

“A record of what?””

“Financial instability.””

I understood.

The declined cards.

The five-hundred-dollar allowance.

The accusations about overspending.

They were building a story.

A story where I was irresponsible.

Dependent.

Unstable.

Unfit.

And if they succeeded, Daniel could become guardian of Lily's assets.

Including the fortune I'd inherited from my father.

I whispered, “They were trying to take my daughter.””

Jonathan corrected me.

“They were trying to take control of your daughter.””

My phone buzzed.

A new email.

Subject:

*Emergency Family Court Notice.*

I opened it.

The first line read:

*Petition for Temporary Guardianship of Minor Child Lily Carter.*

Petitioner:

*Daniel Carter.*

My hands began shaking.

Then I saw the attached evidence.

Bank statements.

Credit card records.

Medical bills.

Photographs.

Everything carefully selected.

Every embarrassing moment.

Every purchase.

Every time I'd asked Daniel for help.

My entire marriage had been turned into evidence against me.

Then I reached the final page.

There was a statement from a witness.

I knew the name.

My mother-in-law.

Evelyn claimed I'd suffered an emotional breakdown after my father's death.

She claimed I had become obsessed with money.

She claimed I'd neglected Lily.

And then she wrote one sentence that made my blood run cold.

*Emily has repeatedly expressed that she does not want the responsibility of raising Lily.*

I whispered, “That's a lie.””

Jonathan looked at me.

“I know.””

“No.””

I pushed the papers away.

“She told them I don't want my daughter?””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“Then I'm going home.””

Jonathan grabbed my wrist.

“Emily, don't confront them alone.””

I looked at him.

“I'm not going home to confront them.””

“Then why?””

I picked up my phone.

“To give them exactly what they think they want.””

Jonathan frowned.

“What?””

I smiled.

“To let them believe I'm scared.””

When I walked through the front door that evening, Daniel was waiting.

Evelyn sat beside him.

Both looked serious.

Daniel stood.

“Where were you?””

I placed my purse down.

“Meeting a lawyer.””

Evelyn's face changed.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Why?””

I looked between them.

“Because I was worried.””

“About what?””

“My finances.””

Evelyn laughed.

“You finally understand.””

I lowered my eyes.

“I think you're right.””

Daniel's shoulders relaxed.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

I let my voice tremble.

“I don't understand any of this.””

Evelyn exchanged a satisfied glance with her son.

Daniel gently touched my shoulder.

“Then let me help you.””

I nodded.

“Okay.””

He smiled.

“Good.””

Then he handed me a folder.

“Sign these.””

I looked down.

“What's this?””

“Temporary financial management documents.””

My pulse accelerated.

“Do I have to?””

Evelyn leaned forward.

“If you truly care about Lily, you'll do what's best for her.””

I looked at the papers.

Then at my husband.

“Okay.””

Daniel placed a pen in my hand.

I lowered it toward the signature line.

And just before the tip touched the paper, my phone buzzed.

A message from Robert.

*Don't sign.*

Then another.

*We found the original guardianship document.*

A third appeared.

*Emily, you need to see who Daniel listed as Lily's guardian.*

May you like

My eyes lifted toward Evelyn.

Because I already knew.
