Chapter 3: The Woman in the Photograph

The attorney's name was Jonathan Reed.

I remembered him.

Everyone did.

He had been my father's lawyer for almost twenty years.

Then, six months after my wedding, he vanished from our family's affairs.

Evelyn had told me he'd retired.

Robert told me otherwise.

“He resigned.””

“Why?””

“He wouldn't explain.””

“Did my father know?””

“He did.””

I stared at the message.

“Where is Jonathan now?””

Robert handed me a card.

“Chicago.””

I looked at the number.

“Call him.””

Robert shook his head.

“Already did.””

“And?””

“He agreed to speak with you.””

“When?””

“Today.””

Jonathan chose a quiet restaurant far from downtown.

When I entered, I recognized him immediately.

Older.

Thinner.

But the same tired eyes.

He stood.

“Emily.””

I hugged him.

He held me tightly for a moment.

Then he stepped back.

“Your father would be furious.””

“At me?””

“No.””

His jaw tightened.

“At them.””

We sat.

I didn't waste time.

“Did Evelyn forge my power of attorney?””

Jonathan looked down.

“Yes.””

The word hit me with surprising force.

“You knew?””

“I discovered it after the wedding.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I tried.””

“What happened?””

“Your husband intercepted my letter.””

I froze.

“Daniel?””

Jonathan nodded.

“He came to my office.””

“What did he say?””

Jonathan's expression hardened.

“He told me you were emotionally unstable after your father's death.””

My fingers curled around the table.

“He said you were confused about finances.””

“He said I was grieving and easily manipulated.””

I stared at him.

“And you believed him?””

“No.””

“Then why did you leave?””

Jonathan looked out the window.

“Because your father had anticipated exactly this.””

He reached into his briefcase.

“Your father created a contingency file.””

He placed a small envelope on the table.

My name was written across it.

*EMILY. OPEN ONLY IF THEY TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR MONEY.*

My breath caught.

“He wrote that?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two weeks before he died.””

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

I read silently.

Then I read it again.

My father's handwriting.

*Emily, if you are reading this, someone has convinced you that dependence is the same thing as love. It isn't.*

My vision blurred.

*If they restrict your access to money, do not fight them immediately. Let them believe they have won.*

I stopped.

Jonathan watched me.

“What does the rest say?””

I continued.

*Because people reveal themselves when they believe they have power over you.*

A tear fell onto the paper.

Jonathan quietly said, “He knew.””

I wiped my cheek.

“What else?””

The final line was underlined twice.

*The person who tries to take your freedom will eventually reveal what they were trying to hide.*

I looked up.

“What was Daniel hiding?””

Jonathan didn't answer.

Instead, he pulled out another folder.

“This.””

Inside was a series of corporate records.

Daniel had been moving money.

Not from the company.

From a private account.

I recognized the destination.

*Carter Family Foundation.*

“What is this?””

“Payments.””

“How much?””

“Almost four million dollars.””

I stared at the numbers.

“Where did it go?””

“That's the interesting part.””

Jonathan turned the page.

The foundation had transferred money to several shell companies.

Then those companies had purchased property.

I recognized one address.

My house.

I looked at Jonathan.

“This house?””

He nodded.

“Technically, yes.””

“But Daniel bought this house.””

“No.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who did?””

“You.””

I sat back.

My entire marriage seemed to be rearranging itself in front of me.

The house.

The cars.

The company.

The vacations.

The lifestyle.

I'd always thought Daniel was providing it.

Apparently, I'd been financing my own captivity.

Jonathan leaned forward.

“There's one more thing.””

“What?””

“The foundation's current chairman.””

“Daniel?””

“No.””

“Evelyn?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Jonathan slid a document toward me.

I saw the name.

And my breath stopped.

*Emily Carter.*

My name.

My signature.

My supposed appointment as chairman.

I shook my head.

“I never signed this.””

“I know.””

“Then why am I listed as chairman?””

“Because whoever created these documents needed your identity.””

“For what?””

Jonathan's voice became grim.

“To make every transaction look like it had your approval.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He didn't answer.

The restaurant door opened.

A man entered.

Jonathan glanced toward him.

Then back at me.

“Because they weren't stealing your money.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“They were building something with it.””

The man approaching our table placed a phone in front of me.

The screen showed a live corporate filing.

A new transaction had just been submitted.

My trust had been used to acquire another company.

I looked at Jonathan.

“Who did this?””

His face changed.

“That's impossible.””

“What?””

He pointed at the screen.

“Look at the buyer.””

I did.

The acquiring entity was listed beneath the transaction.

*Carter Family Holdings LLC.*

Then I saw the beneficiary.

My stomach dropped.

It wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Evelyn.

It wasn't me.

It was a name I had never seen before.

May you like

*Lily Carter.*

My eight-month-old daughter.
