Chapter 2: The Signature
I didn't sleep.
At 2:13 a.m., I was still sitting at the kitchen table with my laptop open, watching the same document on the screen.
Evelyn Carter.
Her signature appeared at the bottom of the guarantee agreement.
Beneath it was a legal description of collateral.
My father's trust.
My property.
My inheritance.
Assets Daniel had never known existed.
Or perhaps he had known.
That possibility made my stomach turn.
I called Robert.
He answered immediately.
“Emily.””
“You knew.””
“I suspected.””
“You knew my mother-in-law used my trust as collateral.””
“Not until tonight.””
I stared at the signature.
“How?””
Robert's voice became careful.
“Three years ago, Carter Construction requested an emergency credit facility.””
“I remember Daniel saying the company was expanding.””
“They told us the company required temporary liquidity.””
“And the collateral?””
“Your father had established a restricted ownership structure. Your assets weren't supposed to be pledged without your authorization.””
“But they were.””
“Yes.””
“Who approved it?””
“Your mother-in-law submitted documentation claiming you had granted her authority.””
I sat upright.
“I never did.””
“I know.””
“Then why did the bank accept it?””
“Because the document looked legitimate.””
My hand went cold.
“What document?””
“We'll discuss it tomorrow in person.””
“No.””
“Emily—”
“I need to know now.””
There was silence.
Then Robert said quietly, “A power of attorney.””
I couldn't breathe.
“I never signed one.””
“That is what we need to establish.””
I looked toward the basement door.
Daniel was down there.
Sleeping comfortably, probably.
Believing he'd reduced his wife to a five-hundred-dollar allowance.
I whispered, “Robert, how much money did they borrow?””
“Approximately eighteen million dollars.””
I nearly dropped the phone.
“Eighteen million?””
“Yes.””
“And my trust guaranteed it?””
“Not exactly.””
“What does that mean?””
“The trust owns the controlling interest in several entities. Those entities guaranteed the facility.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“Why would my father structure it that way?””
“He didn't.””
The room went silent.
“Then who did?””
Robert didn't answer immediately.
Finally, he said, “That's what we're going to find out.””
At 8:06 the next morning, Daniel walked into the kitchen.
He looked refreshed.
I looked like I'd aged ten years.
He poured himself coffee.
“Morning.””
“Morning.””
He glanced at Lily.
“She's still sleeping?””
“Yes.””
“Good.””
He opened his phone.
“Your allowance transferred.””
I looked at him.
“My allowance?””
“Five hundred.””
“Right.””
“You should be grateful.””
I said nothing.
Daniel smiled.
“You're learning.””
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
“Daniel Carter.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
I watched him.
He turned toward the window.
“That's impossible.””
A pause.
“No. The credit facility isn't due.””
Another pause.
“Who authorized a review?””
His eyes moved toward me.
I lowered my gaze.
He ended the call.
“What happened?”” I asked.
“Nothing.””
“Are you sure?””
He grabbed his jacket.
“Stay out of business matters.””
“Of course.””
He stopped.
“Actually, Emily…”
“Yes?””
“If anyone from the bank contacts you, you don't speak to them.””
I looked up.
“Why?””
“Because you don't understand financial contracts.””
There was something almost desperate beneath his irritation.
I noticed.
He left.
Five minutes later, my phone rang.
Robert.
“Emily, they're panicking.””
“Who?””
“Carter Construction.””
I leaned back.
“Good.””
Robert didn't laugh.
“There's more.””
“Tell me.””
“The bank found a second document.””
My heart sank.
“What document?””
“A transfer agreement.””
“Transfer of what?””
“Ownership.””
I stood.
“Whose ownership?””
Robert paused.
“Yours.””
By noon, I was sitting in Robert's private office.
He placed a thick folder on the table.
“Before you open it,” he said, “remember something.””
“What?””
“Your father didn't trust Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“He never said it directly.””
Robert slid an old photograph across the table.
My father.
Daniel.
Evelyn.
Me.
It had been taken at our engagement dinner.
Everyone was smiling.
Everyone except my father.
I remembered that night.
I'd assumed he was tired.
Robert pointed at my father's face.
“He asked me one question after this dinner.””
“What?””
“'If Emily marries him, how long before they come after her money?''”
My throat tightened.
“What did you tell him?””
“That I'd protect you.””
Robert opened the folder.
Inside was the alleged power of attorney.
My signature was on the last page.
I stared at it.
It looked like mine.
Almost.
But not quite.
“The handwriting is close,” I whispered.
Robert nodded.
“Your father had your genuine signature samples archived.””
“You knew this was forged?””
“We suspected.””
I looked at the date.
Three months after my wedding.
I remembered exactly where I had been that day.
At home.
Pregnant.
Sick.
Daniel had told me he was handling some insurance paperwork.
My hands began to tremble.
“Robert…”
“Yes?””
“Daniel knew.””
Robert didn't answer.
I flipped through the documents.
There were bank transfers.
Company acquisitions.
Real estate purchases.
Payments to consulting firms.
And then I saw a familiar name.
*Carter Family Holdings.*
I pointed at it.
“What is this?””
Robert's expression hardened.
“That is the company currently holding forty-seven percent of Carter Construction.””
“Who owns it?””
He looked directly at me.
“You do.””
I stared at him.
“But Daniel said his family owns it.””
“They've been telling you that for years.””
I turned another page.
There it was.
The ownership structure.
My father's trust.
My name.
My controlling interest.
And then another document.
A handwritten note from my father.
Robert had preserved it in a plastic sleeve.
I read the first line.
*If they ever try to control Emily through money, give her the truth before you give her the power.*
My eyes filled with tears.
My father had known.
Maybe he had always known.
Robert quietly said, “Emily, there is one final issue.””
I looked up.
“What?””
He pointed to a signature at the bottom of the page.
“Your husband's.””
I frowned.
“That's not Daniel's signature.””
“No.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then whose is it?””
Robert closed the folder.
“That's what I want you to tell me.””
I looked at the signature again.
And then I recognized the initials.
They belonged to someone I hadn't seen since my wedding day.
Someone who had disappeared from the Carter family without explanation.
Someone who apparently knew exactly what Evelyn had been doing.
My father's former attorney.
May you like
And he had just sent Robert a message.
*Tell Emily not to trust her husband.*
