Chapter 9: The Last Lie
Sabrina walked into the factory like she owned it.
Because for twelve years, she had.
She held the folder against her chest.
No fear.
No panic.
Only confidence.
Daniel hated that confidence.
Because he knew it.
It was the confidence of someone who believed they still controlled the ending.
“You’re finished, Sabrina.””
She smiled.
“Am I?””
The police moved closer.
But Sabrina raised the folder.
“You arrest me, and everyone loses.””
Daniel stared.
“What is that?””
“Your past.””
She opened it.
“Your real past.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Sabrina laughed.
“You still protect him.””
She looked at Daniel.
“Even after everything.””
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“Speak.””
Sabrina opened the folder.
Inside were medical records.
Photos.
Documents.
“The accident didn’t just damage your memory.””
Daniel said nothing.
“It changed you.””
She looked at Claire.
“And she knew.””
Daniel turned.
Claire went pale.
“No.””
Sabrina smiled.
“Tell him.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Tell me what?””
Claire looked broken.
“The doctors said your memory might return.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Claire whispered:
“They warned me.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Sabrina threatened Ivy.””
Sabrina interrupted.
“And because Claire was afraid.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Afraid of what?””
Sabrina’s smile disappeared.
“That if you remembered everything, you would hate her.””
Claire shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
But Daniel saw something.
A hesitation.
A hidden wound.
“What happened that night?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“I chose Ivy.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“The doctors said you might never wake up. Sabrina offered me a deal.””
Sabrina looked away.
“Claire.””
But Claire continued.
“She said if I disappeared, Ivy would stay safe.””
Daniel felt sick.
“You believed her.””
“I was a mother.””
The words were quiet.
“I was terrified.””
Sabrina stepped forward.
“And that is the truth.””
Everyone looked at her.
For the first time, Sabrina sounded honest.
“I wasn’t the only person who made choices.””
Daniel stared.
“You kidnapped my daughter.””
“Yes.””
The answer shocked everyone.
Sabrina looked at him.
“But I loved her.””
Claire’s expression hardened.
“You don’t get to call that love.””
Sabrina looked down.
“No.””
A tear appeared.
“Maybe I don’t.””
The police moved.
This time, Sabrina did not resist.
Before they took her away, she handed Daniel the folder.
“One more thing.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a letter.
From Ethan.
But dated two years after his supposed death.
Daniel looked up.
“Where did you get this?””
Sabrina smiled sadly.
“He gave it to me.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel turned.
“Ethan?””
Ethan looked confused.
“I never did.””
Daniel looked back at the letter.
A final message.
A final secret.
The handwriting was Ethan’s.
But the signature was different.
Someone had copied it.
The detective examined the paper.
“This wasn’t written by Ethan.””
Daniel looked at Sabrina.
“Then who?””
She stared at Claire.
And whispered:
“The person who started all of this.””
Claire went completely still.
Because she knew.
Someone else knew.
Someone else had been watching.
The detective checked the document.
Then stopped.
“There’s a fingerprint.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Whose?””
May you like
The detective’s face changed.
“Claire’s.””
