Chapter 8: The Brother in the Shadows

Daniel found Ethan at the abandoned Mercer factory.

The place had been closed for years.

A forgotten building from the beginning of the family empire.

The place where Daniel and Ethan had built their first business together.

The place where everything began.

Police surrounded the area.

But Daniel entered alone.

Because Ethan had requested him.

Inside, the air smelled like dust and rust.

A single light hung from the ceiling.

And beneath it stood Ethan Mercer.

Older.

Thinner.

But alive.

Daniel stopped.

For several seconds, neither brother spoke.

Then Ethan smiled.

“You look exactly the same.””

Daniel’s expression did not change.

“You look dead.””

Ethan laughed softly.

“I deserved that.””

Daniel walked closer.

“Where is Emma?””

“She’s safe.””

“I want to see her.””

“You will.””

“Now.””

Ethan studied him.

“You still sound like my brother.””

Daniel looked angry.

“I am your brother.””

“Are you?””

The question stopped him.

Ethan stepped forward.

“You lost twelve years.””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Because of you.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was unexpected.

Ethan looked down.

“I made mistakes.””

“You destroyed my life.””

“I know.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“Then tell me why.””

Ethan looked around the factory.

“Because I thought I could fix everything.””

He took a breath.

“I thought I could expose Sabrina.””

“And?””

“I underestimated her.””

Ethan explained everything.

The money.

The fake charities.

The manipulation.

Sabrina had discovered Ethan’s plan.

She had threatened him.

Then came the crash.

Daniel listened silently.

“You were driving.””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did you try to kill me?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“I lost control.””

Daniel looked away.

“Convenient.””

Ethan accepted the anger.

“I know how it sounds.””

“And Emma?””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“She saw something.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“She saw Sabrina switch the brakes.””

The room went silent.

Daniel felt cold.

“What?””

Ethan nodded.

“She was six years old. She didn’t understand everything. But she knew Sabrina touched the car.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

“Because Sabrina had already convinced everyone I was the problem.””

Ethan looked at him.

“And then she made sure you forgot.””

Daniel stared.

A question formed.

“Why did you let Claire leave?””

Ethan looked ashamed.

“I tried to stop Sabrina.””

“But you failed.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at his brother.

“You let my wife and daughter believe I was dead.””

Ethan lowered his head.

“I thought keeping them away from Sabrina was the only way.””

A noise came from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

Claire stood there.

“You thought?””

Ethan froze.

Claire walked inside.

“You thought taking Emma and disappearing was protecting us?””

Ethan looked devastated.

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

Claire’s voice shook.

“You were.””

Daniel looked between them.

“You both knew pieces of the truth.””

Neither answered.

Then Ethan said:

“I have something else.””

He pulled out an old envelope.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a DNA report.

His hands froze.

“What is this?””

Ethan looked at Claire.

Then at Daniel.

“Emma isn’t my daughter.””

Silence.

Daniel read the report.

Then looked up.

“No.””

Ethan nodded.

“She’s yours.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Daniel felt the world tilt.

“My daughter?””

Ethan whispered:

“Sabrina knew.””

The factory became completely silent.

Because suddenly every secret connected.

The child nobody knew.

The missing years.

The stolen memories.

Sabrina had not only taken Daniel’s wife.

She had taken his daughter.

A sound came from outside.

A car door slammed.

Ethan’s face changed.

“She found us.””

Daniel turned.

Through the broken factory window, headlights appeared.

And standing beside the car was Sabrina.

Holding a folder.

Smiling.

May you like

“Now,” she called out.

“Let’s tell Daniel the rest of the story.””
