Chapter 1: The Recording in Her Hands
The first thing Daniel Mercer noticed was not the baseball bat lying on the floor.
It was the look on his daughter's face.
Ivy was only four years old, but Daniel had spent enough nights watching security footage from his own companies to recognize fear when he saw it. It was not the simple fear of a child startled by a loud noise. It was the kind of terror that came after someone had learned that the person standing in front of them could hurt them.
And the person Ivy was afraid of was his wife.
Daniel slowly crouched down.
“Ivy,” he said softly, “where did you get that recorder?””
The little girl tightened her fingers around the device.
“Mommy gave it to me.””
Claire froze.
Sabrina stopped moving.
For a moment, nobody in the hallway spoke.
The charity music downstairs continued playing through the speakers, cheerful and completely unaware that the Mercer family had just split open in the middle of their own home.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Is that true?””
Claire swallowed.
“I don’t know what she means.””
Ivy looked between them, confused by the sudden silence.
“Mommy said I have to keep it close,” she whispered.
“She said if Sabrina talks mean again, I have to press the button.””
Daniel felt something cold settle in his chest.
He looked at the recorder again.
The device was expensive. Professional. The kind of thing someone would use when they expected they might need evidence later.
“Why would you need evidence, Claire?”” he asked.
Claire’s expression changed.
Not because she was guilty.
Because she was tired.
Tired in a way Daniel had never noticed before.
For years, he had been the man everyone admired. The businessman who built an empire from nothing. The husband who appeared beside his elegant wife at charity events. The father who donated millions to children’s hospitals.
But standing in that hallway, watching his daughter hide behind another woman, Daniel realized there was a part of his family he had never truly seen.
Claire slowly stood.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
Her eyes moved toward Sabrina.
“When I knew Ivy was safe.””
Sabrina laughed once.
A sharp, bitter sound.
“You see what she’s doing, Daniel? She’s manipulating you. She comes back after years away, fills Ivy’s head with lies, and suddenly she’s the victim.””
Claire turned.
“Years away?””
Daniel looked at her.
That sentence bothered him.
Sabrina noticed.
“You didn’t tell him?””
Claire’s face went pale.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Tell me what?””
The hallway became silent again.
Sabrina pushed herself up from the floor and brushed dust from her red dress.
“You really never told him?””
Claire did not answer.
Daniel looked at both women.
“Someone start explaining.””
Sabrina smiled.
It was not a kind smile.
It was the same smile Daniel had seen her use when negotiating deals. The smile that meant she believed she had already won.
“Ask your precious first wife where she was the night she disappeared.””
Ivy immediately grabbed Claire’s hand.
“Don’t talk about Mommy.””
Daniel stared.
First wife.
The words felt impossible.
He looked at Claire.
“Is that true?””
Claire closed her eyes.
For years, she had imagined this moment.
She had imagined anger. She had imagined questions. She had imagined Daniel hating her.
But she had never imagined Ivy standing between them.
“Yes,” Claire whispered.
Daniel stepped back.
The security guards looked away, pretending they had not heard.
“You were married to me?””
Claire nodded.
“Before Sabrina.””
“Why didn’t I remember?””
Claire’s lips trembled.
“Because you were hurt.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Before Claire could answer, the recorder in Ivy’s hands suddenly made a tiny sound.
A click.
Everyone turned.
The device had activated.
A voice came through the small speaker.
Daniel knew that voice immediately.
It was Sabrina.
But the recording was not from tonight.
It sounded older.
“Claire, nobody will believe you.””
A second voice answered.
Claire’s voice.
“You’re threatening my daughter.””
Then Sabrina again.
“She’s not your daughter anymore.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
The hallway disappeared.
The guests downstairs disappeared.
The only thing left was the voice coming from the recorder.
“I already took everything from you once,” Sabrina said.
“Don’t make me do it again.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Daniel slowly looked at Sabrina.
“What was that?””
Sabrina’s confidence finally cracked.
Only for a second.
But Daniel saw it.
And Claire saw it too.
Because they both understood the same thing.
Sabrina was no longer controlling the story.
Daniel picked up the recorder.
“Where did this come from?””
Claire looked at Ivy.
“She found it.””
“Where?””
Claire hesitated.
Then she answered.
“In the wall.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“What?””
Claire pointed toward the hallway.
“Behind the painting in Ivy’s room.””
The painting.
Daniel remembered it.
A family portrait Sabrina had insisted on hanging there.
A portrait of Daniel, Sabrina, and Ivy.
A portrait that had always bothered Claire.
Because Claire had never been in it.
Daniel turned toward the staircase.
“Show me.””
Nobody noticed Sabrina reaching into the folds of her dress.
Nobody noticed her hand closing around something small.
Except Ivy.
The little girl looked up suddenly.
“Daddy.””
Daniel stopped.
“What is it?””
Ivy pointed behind him.
“Sabrina has another one.””
Daniel turned.
And saw the fear return to Ivy’s face.
Because Sabrina was no longer holding a smile.
May you like
She was holding a second recorder.
And this one had a red light blinking.
