Chapter 7: The Secret Claire Buried

Claire did not sleep.

Neither did Daniel.

The note remained on the kitchen table all night.

Four words.

Four words that turned every memory into a question.

Ask Claire about Emma.

By sunrise, Daniel had stopped trying to protect Claire from suspicion.

Not because he believed she was guilty.

Because he needed the truth.

They sat across from each other in the kitchen.

The same kitchen where Claire had once made breakfast for him every morning.

Now it felt like an interrogation room.

“Tell me everything.””

Claire looked exhausted.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“Yes.””

“I know.””

Daniel waited.

Claire wrapped both hands around her coffee cup.

“Emma was six months old when Ethan brought her to me.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why you?””

“Because he trusted me.””

“Why?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because he knew Sabrina was watching him.””

Daniel leaned back.

“Watching him?””

Claire nodded.

“She knew Ethan had stolen money from the company. She knew he was planning to disappear.””

“And you helped him?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“I wanted to help Emma.””

Daniel watched her.

“What happened?””

Claire looked toward the window.

“Ethan said he had proof against Sabrina.””

“Proof of what?””

“That she had been moving money through fake charities.””

Daniel remembered the charity reception.

The perfect image.

The donations.

The cameras.

Everything Sabrina had built.

Claire continued.

“He said Sabrina wasn’t just trying to take your company.””

“She wanted the whole Mercer name.””

Daniel looked down.

“And Emma?””

Claire’s voice broke.

“Emma was the one thing she couldn’t control.””

The detective entered with new information.

“Mr. Mercer.””

Daniel looked up.

“What happened?””

“We found security footage from the night Emma disappeared.””

Claire stood.

“Where?””

The detective placed a tablet on the table.

The video showed the Mercer estate twelve years earlier.

A younger Daniel.

A younger Claire.

A small child.

And Sabrina.

Daniel stared.

He watched himself arguing with someone outside.

The audio was unclear.

Then Ethan appeared.

The brothers fought.

Suddenly, Daniel saw something.

Something he had never remembered.

Sabrina standing nearby.

Holding a phone.

Recording everything.

Then the video cut.

The detective paused.

“The footage was damaged.””

Daniel stared.

“Can you recover it?””

“We’re trying.””

Claire looked at the screen.

“She wanted us to find this.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“She left the footage where we would eventually discover it.””

The detective nodded.

“She’s sending a message.””

Daniel felt anger rise.

“She’s still controlling things.””

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

It was Daniel’s phone.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then a voice.

A child’s voice.

“Daddy?””

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

The voice was familiar.

But impossible.

“Who is this?””

A small breath.

Then:

“It’s Emma.””

Daniel stood.

Claire covered her mouth.

The detective immediately motioned for the call to be traced.

“Where are you?””

Daniel asked.

The child whispered:

“He said you would come.””

“Who?””

Silence.

Then a man spoke.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Daniel froze.

He knew that voice.

Even after twelve years.

Even after believing it was impossible.

“Ethan.””

Claire stepped back.

The detective listened carefully.

Daniel gripped the phone.

“You’re alive.””

A quiet laugh.

“I was never dead.””

“Where is my niece?””

Ethan ignored the question.

“You found the picture.””

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“You kidnapped a child.””

“No.””

The answer was calm.

“I saved her.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“From who?””

Ethan was silent.

Then he said:

“From the same woman who destroyed your memory.””

The call ended.

The detective looked up.

“Did you get the location?””

“No.””

Daniel stared at the phone.

But Claire noticed something.

A small detail.

The call had not come from an unknown place.

It had come from inside the city.

Inside their own area.

Claire whispered:

“He wants us to find him.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

She looked confused.

“He wants me to find him.””

Because Daniel finally understood.

Ethan had spent twelve years hiding.

May you like

He had not been running.

He had been waiting.
