Chapter 10

That evening, I walked home through the city.

The air was crisp. The lights were bright.

I thought about that day.

The slap. The glasses flying across the room. The walk to Michael's office. The moment everything changed.

I had been so angry. So humiliated. So ready to fight.

And that fight had led me here.

To a position I had never dreamed of.

To a company I had helped save.

To a life I had built from the ruins of someone else's betrayal.

I stopped at a crosswalk.

A woman stood beside me. She looked familiar.

It was Victoria.

She looked tired. Worn. But different somehow.

She saw me. Flinched. Then straightened up.

"Claire," she said.

"Victoria," I replied.

"I just wanted to say," she said quietly. "I'm sorry. For everything. For framing you. For letting him use me. For being part of the pain."

She paused.

"I've been working at a shelter. Helping women. Trying to make amends. Trying to be someone better."

I looked at her.

I didn't forgive her. Not fully. What she had done was cruel. Calculated. It could have destroyed me.

But I saw something in her eyes. Regret. And hope.

"Good," I said. "Keep doing that."

The light changed.

I walked across the street.

And I didn't look back.

Somewhere, Michael was in prison. Paying for his crimes.

Somewhere, Victoria was trying to rebuild.

Somewhere, Charlotte was thriving, free from a toxic marriage.

And here I was.

Standing tall.

Strong.

Confident.

Safe.

I had been a pawn.

But I had become something more.

May you like

I had become the one who moved the pieces.

And I was just getting started.
