Chapter 1

The CEO's wife stormed into my office in downtown Chicago and slapped me so hard my glasses flew off.

"You little homewrecker!" Charlotte screamed, her face red with rage. "I know what you've been doing with my husband!"

The whole office went silent.

Everyone was watching.

I stood there, holding my stinging cheek, and looked at her.

Then I slapped her back.

Hard.

She stumbled backward, shocked.

Nobody had ever stood up to her before.

"You have the wrong person," I said, my voice steady.

Before she could scream again, I turned and marched toward Michael's private office.

I grabbed the doorknob and threw the door open.

"Michael, you need to tell your wife the truth!" I shouted.

But the room wasn't empty.

Victoria, our HR Director, was sitting on Michael's desk.

Her blouse was unbuttoned at the top.

Her lipstick was smudged.

And Michael was standing right next to her, his tie loosened, looking like he'd been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Charlotte pushed past me and froze.

Her eyes went from Victoria to Michael and back again.

"What... what is this?" she whispered.

Victoria quickly buttoned her blouse and tried to look professional.

"Charlotte, this isn't what it looks like," she said smoothly. "We were just discussing—"

"Shut up," Charlotte cut her off.

She turned to me, her eyes filled with a terrible realization.

"You," she said softly. "You sent me those anonymous texts, didn't you?"

I shook my head.

"No," I said. "I didn't send anything."

That's when I saw it.

Victoria's phone was face up on the desk.

And the screen showed a text conversation.

With Charlotte's number.

Victoria had been the one sending the anonymous tips.

She'd been the one planting the evidence.

The expensive necklace in my desk drawer.

The hotel receipt in my bag.

The late-night calendar entries.

She'd framed me to make Charlotte attack me.

To create a distraction.

To make sure nobody suspected the real affair.

I looked at Victoria, and she looked back at me.

For a split second, I saw the panic in her eyes.

And then I noticed something else on Michael's desk.

A resignation letter.

Addressed to the board.

May you like

With Victoria's name on it.

And a date from last week.
