Chapter 6: The Photograph That Changed My Past

The message stayed on Daniel’s phone screen for only a few seconds.

But it was long enough.

Long enough for everyone to see it.

Long enough for my father to understand.

Long enough for me to realize one terrifying truth.

This wasn’t a family argument anymore.

This wasn’t about Chloe.

This wasn’t about the ring.

This wasn’t even about Daniel.

Someone had been moving pieces around my life for years.

And I had been the only person who didn’t know I was part of the game.

My father took Daniel’s phone from his hand.

“Who sent this?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

My father looked at the screen.

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

“Then why did they write ‘you failed the test’?””

Daniel looked at me.

And I hated that he looked ashamed.

Because shame meant he knew.

He knew something.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

“Daniel,” I said quietly.

He looked at me.

“What did you do?””

His face changed.

“I was trying to find answers.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Silence.

My father’s security team moved around us, checking the garden entrances and speaking quietly through their earpieces.

The guests had been moved into smaller groups.

No one was leaving.

No one was talking loudly.

Everyone had become a witness.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I was contacted six months after we got married.””

My heart tightened.

“By Blackridge?””

He nodded.

My father’s expression became dangerous.

“Why?””

Daniel swallowed.

“They wanted information.””

“About what?””

“About Hayes International.””

My father stepped closer.

“And you gave it to them?””

“No.””

Daniel answered too quickly.

My father noticed.

So did I.

“No?””

Daniel looked desperate.

“I gave them something.””

The honesty hurt.

“What?””

He rubbed his face.

“Nothing important.””

I stared at him.

“You don’t get to decide what’s important.””

He closed his eyes.

“I gave them public information. Market reports. Things anyone could find.””

My father’s voice became colder.

“Until they asked for more.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My stomach twisted.

“What did they ask for?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Information about you.””

The courtyard became silent again.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He shook his head.

“I didn’t know.””

“But you kept talking to them.””

“I was trying to find out who they were.””

My father laughed softly.

A humorless sound.

“You were investigating an intelligence company while giving them access to yourself?””

Daniel looked down.

“I made mistakes.””

I felt something inside me break.

Mistakes.

Such a small word.

For such a huge betrayal.

“You didn’t make mistakes, Daniel.””

My voice was quiet.

“You made choices.””

He looked at me.

“I love you.””

The words hit me.

Because once, they would have saved him.

Once, hearing those words from him would have made me forgive anything.

But tonight?

Tonight, they felt empty.

“Then why didn’t you trust me?””

He had no answer.

And that was the answer.

My father’s assistant returned quickly.

“Mr. Hayes.””

My father turned.

“The photograph.””

Everyone became still.

“Bring it.””

The assistant nodded and handed him a small protective envelope.

My father stared at it.

Like it was something dangerous.

Maybe it was.

He opened it slowly.

Inside was a photograph.

Old.

Faded.

The kind of picture that belonged in a family album.

Not in the hands of a stranger.

My father looked at it first.

Then he closed his eyes.

A painful expression crossed his face.

“Dad?””

He handed it to me.

My fingers shook as I took it.

At first, I only saw a hospital room.

A young woman lying in a bed.

A man holding a tiny baby.

My breath caught.

Because I recognized the man.

My father.

But the woman…

I had never seen her before.

“She’s my mother?””

My father nodded.

I looked closer.

The woman looked exhausted.

But she was smiling.

Not a fake smile.

A real one.

The kind people have when they believe they still have a future.

I touched the edge of the photograph.

“She looks happy.””

My father’s voice cracked.

“She was.””

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

He stared at the picture.

“Your mother knew she was in danger.””

The words were quiet.

“She knew before I did.””

I swallowed.

“What did she know?””

My father sat down slowly.

A man who had faced boardrooms, lawsuits, and enemies without fear.

But this memory destroyed him.

“She discovered that someone inside my company had been selling information.””

I looked at Daniel.

“The same person?””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did you find them?””

“No.””

That shocked me.

“You never found them?””

He shook his head.

“They covered everything.””

My father looked at the photograph.

“Your mother spent the last months of her life trying to protect you.””

My eyes filled.

“Protect me from what?””

He hesitated.

Then:

“From being used as leverage.””

I frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

My father looked at me.

“Your mother discovered something about Hayes International’s foundation.””

“What?””

“That the company wasn’t just built on money.””

A pause.

“It was built on information.””

The words felt strange.

“What kind of information?””

My father looked away.

“Information powerful enough to destroy governments.””

The courtyard went quiet.

I stared at him.

“You’re saying my mother died because of company secrets?””

“Yes.””

“And you hid all of this from me?””

His eyes closed.

“Yes.””

I looked down.

The photograph blurred.

Not because I couldn’t see.

Because tears filled my eyes.

I had spent my whole life thinking my mother was a tragic story.

A woman who died too young.

A woman I simply never got to know.

But now I knew something worse.

She had been running.

And somehow…

I was the reason.

Daniel moved closer.

“Anna.””

I stepped away.

He stopped.

“Don’t.””

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“Are you?””

His face fell.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

“I am.””

“Everything.””

A long silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“I found the photograph three weeks ago.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“I found it in my office.””

My father immediately turned.

“Your office?””

“Yes.””

“Who put it there?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

My father’s expression darkened.

“Why didn’t you tell Anna?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because the same day I found it, Blackridge contacted me.””

“What did they say?””

Daniel swallowed.

“They told me if I told Anna the truth…”

He paused.

My voice was barely audible.

“What?””

“They would send someone after her.””

A cold silence.

My father stepped forward.

“And you believed them?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I saw what they did to people who crossed them.””

“Who?””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“My previous business partner.””

“What happened?””

He looked away.

“He disappeared.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Chloe suddenly laughed.

It was a strange sound.

Almost hysterical.

Everyone looked at her.

“You all are acting like Daniel is some villain.””

My father turned.

“What did you say?””

Chloe wiped her face.

“I said you’re blaming him because it’s easier.””

I stared at her.

“You helped him.””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

The admission shocked everyone.

Eleanor grabbed her arm.

“Chloe.””

“No.””

Chloe pulled away.

“I’m tired.””

Her eyes were red.

“I’m tired of pretending I knew everything.””

She looked at Daniel.

“You never told me what Blackridge was really doing.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“You knew?””

“I knew they wanted information.””

“And you helped?””

She looked at me.

“I thought it was just business.””

My father’s voice was cold.

“There is no such thing as ‘just business’ with Blackridge.””

Chloe looked down.

“I know that now.””

A phone rang.

Not Daniel’s.

Not my father’s.

Chloe’s.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed instantly.

“No.””

“What?”” Eleanor asked.

Chloe didn’t answer.

She slowly turned the phone around.

A message appeared.

Everyone saw it.

*You were useful. Now you are replaceable.*

Chloe started shaking.

My father took the phone.

Then another message appeared.

This one was shorter.

But it changed everything.

*Ask Daniel who gave him the order.*

My eyes moved to my husband.

Daniel went completely still.

My father noticed.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t respond.

“Who gave you the order?””

Daniel looked at me.

And I saw it.

The truth he had been fighting all night.

The truth he didn’t want to say.

“Daniel.””

His voice cracked.

“I didn’t know who they were at first.””

My father stepped closer.

“But now you do.””

A long silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“The person who hired Blackridge…”

He looked at me.

“The person who wanted to know if you were really Richard Hayes’s daughter…”

My heart stopped.

May you like

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“It was someone inside your family.””
