The Card Behind the Curtain / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in His Phone

The courtyard went silent after my father’s words.

“He’s hiding who he works for.””

I felt every pair of eyes turn toward Daniel.

But he wasn’t looking at anyone else.

Not Chloe.

Not Eleanor.

Not the guests.

Only me.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because I knew that look.

It was the same look he gave me when he forgot my birthday and tried to pretend he had a surprise planned.

The same look when he came home late and said he was “just busy.””

The same look when he promised me there was nothing wrong.

A look that wasn’t filled with guilt.

A look that was filled with fear.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

He looked away.

That single movement answered a question I hadn’t even asked yet.

My father noticed.

Everyone noticed.

“Who do you work for?”” my father asked.

Daniel stayed silent.

My father’s assistant stepped forward with the phone.

“Mr. Hayes, we confirmed the information.””

My father took the device.

“What information?””

The assistant looked at Daniel.

“Mr. Whitmore’s company records show irregular activity beginning eighteen months ago.””

Eleanor immediately stepped forward.

“Careful.””

The assistant ignored her.

“Several financial transfers were made through accounts connected to a private consulting firm.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

My father saw it.

“What consulting firm?””

The assistant looked down.

“The company is called Blackridge Advisory.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But my father reacted instantly.

His expression became colder than before.

“No.””

The word left his mouth quietly.

Almost like he was talking to himself.

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

He stared at Daniel.

“You knew.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I can explain.””

My father laughed once.

Not because something was funny.

Because he finally understood.

“Explain what?””

Daniel looked around.

“Not here.””

My father’s eyes hardened.

“No.””

Daniel flinched.

“No?””

“No.””

My father stepped closer.

“You humiliated my daughter in front of two hundred people.””

His voice remained calm.

“You allowed your family to accuse her of theft.””

Another step.

“You watched them destroy her dress while she was carrying your child.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“And now you want privacy?””

Nobody spoke.

My father looked at him.

“You lost the right to privacy when you made my daughter a target.””

The words hit.

I saw it.

For the first time, Daniel looked ashamed.

But shame arrived too late.

I touched my stomach.

My baby shifted beneath my hand.

And suddenly, I thought about every night Daniel kissed my forehead before bed.

Every morning he asked if I slept well.

Every moment I believed I knew him.

How many of those moments were real?

“Anna,” Daniel said quietly.

I looked at him.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

The sentence almost broke me.

Because it sounded like an apology.

But it wasn’t.

It was an excuse.

“What did you want to happen?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I nodded slowly.

“That’s what I thought.””

Chloe wiped her tears.

“I didn’t know about any of this.””

Everyone looked at her.

She lifted her hands.

“I swear.””

I almost laughed.

Because hearing Chloe talk about honesty was almost unbelievable.

“You didn’t know?””

She looked at me.

“No.””

“Then why did you plant the ring?””

Her face twisted.

“I was trying to help Daniel.””

The courtyard became still again.

I stared at her.

“Help him do what?””

Chloe looked at Daniel.

He shook his head slightly.

A warning.

But Chloe had already gone too far.

She had lost control.

“Find out if you were lying.””

My chest tightened.

“About what?””

Chloe hesitated.

Then she said:

“About being just Anna.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor looked furious.

“Chloe.””

But Chloe continued.

“You always acted like you didn’t care about money.””

She pointed at me.

“You wore cheap clothes. You drove an old car. You acted like you were different from everyone in this family.””

Her voice cracked.

“But Daniel knew there was something strange.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Something strange?””

He didn’t answer.

Chloe laughed bitterly.

“You never told him, did you?””

My heart sank.

“Told him what?””

My father moved slightly closer.

“Chloe.””

His voice was a warning.

But I stopped him.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Let her talk.””

Because after tonight, I was done with half-truths.

Chloe looked directly at me.

“You weren’t just hiding your father.””

The wind moved through the garden.

The lights above us flickered.

“You were hiding something else.””

I felt cold.

“What?””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Enough.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“But I want to know.””

He looked broken.

For the first time all night, he looked like the man I married.

But I couldn’t forget the man who stood there silently while I was destroyed.

“Anna…”

“What else did you find out about me?””

He didn’t answer.

My father’s phone rang again.

Everyone froze.

He looked at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

“Put it on speaker,” I said.

My father looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He answered.

A woman’s voice came through.

“Richard, we have a problem.””

My father immediately recognized her.

“Victoria, report.””

The woman sounded tense.

“Someone accessed the Hayes family security database.””

The courtyard went silent.

“When?”” my father asked.

“Three days ago.””

My stomach dropped.

“From where?””

A pause.

Then:

“From inside your daughter’s home.””

I looked at Daniel.

He stopped breathing.

My father’s eyes locked onto him.

“Continue.””

The woman’s voice lowered.

“The access came from a device registered under Daniel Whitmore’s name.””

Nobody moved.

I couldn’t even feel the ground beneath me.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

My father stared.

“Do not insult me by denying something my system already confirmed.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Anna, I didn’t steal anything.””

I wanted to believe him.

God, some part of me still wanted to.

But trust is a glass.

Once shattered, even the pieces cut you.

“What were you looking for?”” I asked.

Daniel’s face changed.

A tiny movement.

But I saw it.

He wasn’t confused.

He wasn’t innocent.

He was caught.

“I was trying to protect you.””

The words were almost a whisper.

My father stepped forward.

“Protect her from what?””

Daniel looked down.

Then he said something that made my entire body go cold.

“From the people who were watching her before she ever met me.””

A chill ran through me.

“What people?””

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

Not fear of my father.

Not fear of losing his reputation.

Fear for me.

“Anna, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He swallowed.

“I found out something about your family.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

Then back at me.

“Your father wasn’t protecting you from the world.””

A pause.

“He was protecting the world from someone who wanted to find you.””

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“I found messages.””

My father went still.

“From who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

“Someone who knew your real identity before I did.””

The garden fell silent.

My father’s phone remained connected.

The woman on the other end whispered:

“Richard…”

My father listened.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

Everyone watched him.

He lowered the phone slowly.

“Victoria just found another message.””

I felt my fingers tighten around my torn dress.

“What message?””

My father looked at me.

And the fear in his eyes was something I had never seen before.

Not even when I was a child.

“Anna…”

His voice was barely audible.

“The person who accessed our system didn’t leave a threat.””

A pause.

“They left a warning.””

My skin went cold.

“What did it say?””

My father looked toward Daniel.

Then back at me.

And finally answered.

“It said…”

He stopped.

Like saying the words aloud would make them real.

Then:

“Stop looking for Anna Hayes.””

May you like

A silence.

“Or we will tell her why she was abandoned twenty-nine years ago.””
