The Card Behind the Curtain / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Secret Daniel Buried

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Not Chloe.

Not Eleanor.

Not even Daniel.

The question hung in the air like a storm cloud.

“Why does my daughter’s husband have access to a key that was never supposed to exist?””

My father’s voice wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

The entire courtyard heard him.

And every person there understood one thing.

This was no longer about a missing ring.

It was about something much bigger.

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I watched his face carefully.

Because for the first time in three years, I wasn’t seeing the man I married.

I was seeing the man everyone else knew.

A man with secrets.

A man who had spent years controlling what I knew.

A man who suddenly realized the truth was no longer in his hands.

“Daniel,” my father repeated.

My husband finally looked away.

“Mr. Hayes, I think you’re misunderstanding the situation.””

My father tilted his head slightly.

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

Daniel forced a calm expression.

“That card was given to me because of our marriage.””

A small silence followed.

I felt my heart stop.

“Our marriage?””

I looked at him.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel turned toward me.

“Anna—”

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””

The guests looked between us.

Nobody whispered anymore.

Nobody dared.

Because they were watching a marriage collapse in real time.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Can we talk privately?””

I almost smiled.

Privately.

The word sounded absurd.

After letting two hundred people watch his family tear my dress apart, he wanted privacy.

“No,” I said.

His face tightened.

“Anna.””

“You wanted everyone to see me prove I was innocent.””

I pointed toward the crowd.

“So everyone gets to see the truth.””

My father stood beside me.

Not in front.

Beside.

The way he always had.

He never tried to fight my battles for me.

He just made sure I was never standing alone.

Daniel looked at the card in my father’s hand.

“That card doesn’t mean what you think it means.””

My father’s expression didn’t change.

“Then explain.””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

My father saw it.

I saw it.

Everyone saw it.

Chloe, however, still looked confused.

She stepped closer.

“Daniel, what is he talking about?””

He ignored her.

“Mr. Hayes, I can explain.””

My father nodded.

“I’m listening.””

Daniel looked around.

At the guests.

At his family.

Then at me.

“I knew who Anna was before we got married.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

I stared at him.

“What?””

A wave of whispers moved through the courtyard.

Daniel looked at me.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“You knew?””

My voice became smaller.

“You knew who my father was?””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

The movement hurt more than I expected.

Because suddenly every memory felt different.

Every conversation.

Every moment.

Every time I said I wanted a simple life.

Every time I told him I hated people treating money like it was the most important thing in the world.

He knew.

And he let me believe he didn’t.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Daniel’s eyes softened.

For a second, I saw regret.

But regret was not the same as honesty.

“I wanted to know if you loved me.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was painful.

“You tested me?””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“You let your family insult me for three years.””

“Anna—”

“You watched your mother call me a gold digger.””

“I never agreed with them.””

“But you never stopped them.””

Silence.

That was his answer.

My father looked at Daniel with disappointment.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

Sometimes that was worse.

“Why did you have the card?”” my father asked.

Daniel looked down.

“I found out about it after we got married.””

“That is not an answer.””

Daniel took a breath.

“When Anna and I started dating, I was approached by one of your company’s security directors.””

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“Name.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Michael Reed.””

The name changed something.

My father’s expression hardened.

“Continue.””

Daniel rubbed his hand over his face.

“He told me Anna was being monitored because of threats against your family.””

I frowned.

“Threats?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you scared.””

I stared at him.

“You didn’t tell me because you didn’t trust me.””

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

The words came out before I could stop them.

The baby moved inside me.

I placed my hand over my stomach.

A reminder.

I had spent years building a family with someone who kept me outside of his.

My father looked at the card again.

“Michael Reed gave you this?””

“Yes.””

“For what purpose?””

Daniel was silent.

Too silent.

My father stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

Finally, he answered.

“He told me if anything happened to Anna, I could use it to contact your private security team.””

A few guests gasped.

Chloe looked between us.

“So you had this the whole time?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Her expression changed.

“Wait.””

She pointed at the card.

“You knew it was important?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

“And you let me throw it on the ground?””

Again, silence.

Chloe’s face turned pale.

Because she realized something.

She had not just embarrassed me.

She had exposed herself.

My father looked at her.

“Interesting.””

Chloe straightened.

“What?””

“You accused my daughter of stealing a ring.””

My father held up the card.

“Yet the only valuable item in her possession was something you didn’t even recognize.””

Chloe’s cheeks flushed.

“It’s not my fault.””

“No?””

My father turned to the assistant.

“Show them.””

The assistant walked forward carrying a tablet.

“What is that?”” Eleanor demanded.

The assistant connected the device.

A security camera image appeared on the large screen near the garden entrance.

The crowd shifted.

Because everyone could see themselves.

The recording showed the celebration from earlier.

The moment Chloe touched her ring.

The moment she hugged me.

The moment she walked away.

My stomach tightened.

Because I knew what was coming.

The assistant played the footage.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then everyone saw it.

Chloe’s hand.

Moving.

Quickly.

Carefully.

During the hug, her fingers slipped beneath the edge of my shawl.

Not taking something from me.

Placing something.

A small object.

The crowd reacted immediately.

“No way.””

“She planted something?””

“She set her up?””

Chloe’s face drained.

“Stop.””

The assistant didn’t stop.

The video continued.

After Chloe walked away, she looked toward Eleanor.

And smiled.

That smile.

The same one I knew too well.

The assistant paused the video.

My father looked at Chloe.

“Would you like to explain?””

Chloe’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Eleanor stepped forward.

“This proves nothing.””

Everyone turned.

Even Chloe looked at her mother.

Eleanor continued.

“The video does not show a ring.””

My father nodded.

“Correct.””

He looked at the assistant.

“Play the next clip.””

Another video appeared.

This one was from inside the house.

A hallway near the ballroom.

And there was Chloe.

Holding something.

My breath caught.

Because I recognized it.

The ring.

The same diamond ring she claimed was missing.

But Chloe wasn’t looking for it.

She wasn’t panicking.

She was smiling.

Then she placed the ring inside a small drawer near the entrance.

The courtyard exploded.

Guests started talking over each other.

“You planted it?””

“She lied?””

“Oh my God.””

Chloe shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became desperate.

“No, you don’t understand.””

I looked at her.

“Then explain.””

She looked at Daniel.

Not me.

Daniel.

And that was when I noticed something.

The fear on her face wasn’t just fear of being caught.

It was fear of what Daniel might say.

My father noticed too.

“Daniel.””

My husband didn’t respond.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, Daniel lifted his eyes.

My father’s voice became colder.

“Was this your idea?””

The question changed everything.

Because Chloe stopped defending herself.

Eleanor stopped speaking.

And Daniel…

Daniel looked at the ground.

That was when I knew.

The ring was never the real betrayal.

It was only the beginning.

My father took one step forward.

“Answer me.””

Daniel finally whispered:

“I didn’t know she was going to tear the dress.””

My blood ran cold.

Not because of what he said.

Because of what he didn’t say.

He didn’t say he didn’t know about the plan.

He said he didn’t know about the dress.

I looked at him.

“Daniel…”

He closed his eyes.

And then Chloe suddenly shouted:

“Tell her the truth!””

The courtyard went silent.

Daniel looked at his sister.

“Chloe, don’t.””

“No.””

She was crying now.

“You let me take the blame for this?””

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“What truth?””

Chloe pointed directly at Daniel.

“The ring was only a distraction.””

My heartbeat slowed.

The air felt colder.

She continued:

“The real reason we did this was because Daniel needed to find out if Anna had access to her father’s company.””

I stopped breathing.

My father went completely still.

And Daniel whispered:

“Chloe, shut up.””

But it was too late.

Because everyone had heard.

And my father had already understood.

The missing ring.

The humiliation.

The purse.

The card.

None of it had been random.

It had all been a test.

A trap.

A trap designed by my own husband.

My father looked at Daniel.

His voice was almost impossible to hear.

“Why?””

Daniel said nothing.

So my father asked again.

“Why were you trying to discover what my daughter had access to?””

Daniel finally looked at me.

And the answer on his face terrified me.

Because I realized something.

My husband wasn’t afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of losing something else.

Something he had been hiding.

Then my father’s phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Impossible.””

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

He answered.

Listened.

Then slowly turned toward Daniel.

“Anna…”

My father’s voice was different now.

“Your husband is not just hiding money.””

May you like

A pause.

“He’s hiding who he works for.””
