Chapter 5: The Daughter Who Was Supposed to Disappear
The words did not make sense.
Not at first.
They floated through the air like a sentence spoken in another language.
“Stop looking for Anna Hayes.””
I stared at my father.
“Or we will tell her why she was abandoned twenty-nine years ago.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The only sound was the soft movement of the fountain behind me.
I felt my hand drift toward my stomach again.
A habit.
A way of reminding myself that I was still standing.
That I was still here.
“Dad?””
My voice sounded different.
Smaller.
“You know what they mean?””
My father didn’t answer immediately.
And that frightened me more than the message.
Because my father always had answers.
When I was six and afraid of storms, he told me exactly when the thunder would stop.
When I was sixteen and my first heartbreak destroyed me, he told me exactly how I would survive.
When I was twenty and lost after college, he told me exactly how to find myself.
But now?
Now he looked like a man standing in front of a door he had spent decades keeping locked.
“Dad,” I repeated.
He looked at me.
“I was going to tell you.””
A painful laugh escaped my mouth.
“When?””
His eyes lowered.
“I don’t know.””
The honesty hurt.
More than a lie would have.
I looked around at the crowd.
Two hundred people.
Strangers.
Friends.
Business partners.
People who had come to celebrate a family that was falling apart.
And suddenly, I hated that they were seeing this.
Not because I was embarrassed.
Because I had spent my entire life believing my father had protected me.
And now I wondered what he had been protecting me from.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Anna.””
I turned toward him.
The anger came back immediately.
Because even after everything, he was still there.
The man who knew pieces of the truth before I did.
The man who investigated me.
The man who lied.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“I know you think you’re helping.””
His expression changed.
“I am.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to say that anymore.””
“Anna—”
“You hacked into my family’s security system.””
“I was trying to understand what was happening.””
“You used my name to access things you had no right to see.””
“I found information that someone wanted hidden from you.””
“And you still hid it from me.””
He went silent.
Because he knew.
That was the part he couldn’t defend.
My father looked between us.
“Daniel.””
Daniel turned.
“If you truly discovered something, now is the time to tell everything.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I don’t know everything.””
“But you know enough.””
A long pause.
Then Daniel said:
“I know Anna was not supposed to survive.””
The entire courtyard froze.
I stared at him.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“When I found those files, I thought they were fake.””
My father’s expression darkened.
“What files?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Files from Blackridge.””
“Answer me.””
Daniel took a breath.
“They were old records.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Records about what?””
He looked at my father.
Then me.
“About Anna’s birth.””
The world seemed to tilt.
I shook my head.
“No.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Anna—”
“No.””
I looked at my father.
“Tell him he’s wrong.””
My father said nothing.
That silence was worse than anything.
“Dad.””
His eyes closed.
Only for a moment.
But I saw it.
The pain.
The guilt.
And suddenly, the memory came back.
I was seven years old.
Sitting on the kitchen counter.
My father cutting strawberries.
I had asked him why I didn’t have pictures of my mother.
He had smiled sadly and said:
“Some stories are painful because they ended too early.””
I never questioned it.
I trusted him.
Because he was my father.
Because he was the safest person in my world.
But now…
I wasn’t sure.
“Who was my mother?”” I whispered.
My father looked at me.
“Anna.””
“Who was she?””
He took a slow breath.
“My mother died when you were born.””
“That’s what you told me.””
“It’s true.””
“But there’s more.””
He looked away.
And I knew.
There was always more.
My father’s assistant quietly moved the guests away from the center of the courtyard.
Giving us space.
Giving us privacy.
But there was no privacy left.
Not after everything.
Daniel spoke softly.
“The files said your mother was involved with Blackridge.””
My father immediately turned.
“Careful.””
Daniel looked back.
“I’m not accusing her.””
“Then choose your words carefully.””
Daniel nodded.
“I’m saying someone used her.””
I looked at him.
“Used her for what?””
He hesitated.
“For information.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What information?””
Daniel looked at my father.
“Hayes International’s security protocols.””
My father’s face hardened.
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“The files said your mother discovered someone inside the company was selling information.””
The courtyard went silent.
“And when she tried to expose them…”
Daniel stopped.
My voice shook.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“They came after her.””
My father stepped forward.
“That is enough.””
I turned.
“No.””
He stopped.
“Dad.””
I swallowed.
“I need to know.””
His expression broke.
Not completely.
But enough.
“You were born during the worst year of my life.””
I listened.
“I lost your mother.””
His voice became quieter.
“And three months later, I found out someone inside my company had betrayed me.””
I looked at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because you were a child.””
“I’m not a child anymore.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
My father looked at me.
“Because the people who hurt your mother never stopped looking.””
The words made my blood run cold.
“Looking for me?””
“Yes.””
A silence.
“Why?””
My father didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“Because you’re the only person who can expose them.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
Daniel looked miserable.
“The files I found said your mother left something behind.””
“What?””
“A record.””
My father’s expression changed.
“Daniel.””
But Daniel continued.
“A record that proves who inside Hayes International betrayed your family.””
My heart pounded.
“Where is it?””
Nobody answered.
And I knew.
I knew before anyone spoke.
“Dad.””
My father looked at me.
“The record.””
His silence confirmed it.
“You have it.””
He looked away.
I stepped back.
“You have it.””
“Anna—”
“You kept this from me.””
“I was protecting you.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You were controlling the truth.””
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
But they were true.
My father lowered his head.
“I thought if you never knew, they could never use you.””
“Use me?””
I laughed bitterly.
“Dad, someone tried to destroy my marriage tonight.””
His expression changed.
“Someone?””
I looked toward Daniel.
The accusation was obvious.
But then I stopped.
Because something didn’t fit.
Daniel was guilty.
He lied.
He betrayed my trust.
But he also looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
I looked at him.
“Who is Blackridge?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then answered:
“A private intelligence company.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“Not just that.””
Daniel nodded.
“You’re right.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“They don’t just collect information.””
A pause.
“They remove problems.””
The lights above us flickered.
My father immediately looked toward security.
“What happened?””
One of the guards touched his earpiece.
Then his face changed.
“Sir.””
My father turned.
“Report.””
The guard swallowed.
“We have a breach.””
My father went still.
“Where?””
The guard looked directly at me.
“Inside the house.””
My heart dropped.
“Inside?””
The guard nodded.
“And there’s one more thing.””
My father’s voice became sharp.
“What?””
The guard looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“The person who entered didn’t steal anything.””
A pause.
“They left something in Anna’s room.””
Nobody spoke.
My father moved instantly.
“What did they leave?””
The guard’s face turned pale.
“A photograph.””
My stomach tightened.
“What photograph?””
The guard looked at me.
“One of Anna.””
I felt cold.
“From when?””
The guard swallowed.
“From the day she was born.””
The courtyard disappeared around me.
Because I understood.
Someone had been watching me before I ever knew they existed.
And they had just proven they were close enough to reach me anytime.
My father grabbed my hand.
“Anna, we’re leaving.””
But before we moved, Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.
Everyone stopped.
He looked at the screen.
His face turned white.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
My father stepped closer.
“Show me.””
Daniel slowly turned the phone around.
The number was hidden.
No name.
No location.
Just one message appearing beneath the call.
A message that made Daniel’s hands shake.
I read it over his shoulder.
And my heart stopped.
*You failed the test. Now she knows.*
May you like
A second message appeared.
*Phase two begins tonight.*
