Chapter 9: The Final Betrayal
William moved faster than anyone.
He ran upstairs.
Emma followed.
Security surrounded the hallways.
But the mansion was old.
Full of hidden passages.
Full of secrets.
William reached the east corridor.
The painting was still there.
The same painting.
The same wall.
The place where his son had almost disappeared forever.
But now something was different.
The painting was slightly moved.
Behind it was another opening.
A second hidden room.
William entered carefully.
Inside was a desk.
Documents.
Photographs.
And a laptop.
Someone had been using the space recently.
Emma picked up a photograph.
Her face changed.
“William…”
He looked.
The photograph showed the entire Sterling family.
But someone had crossed out faces.
William.
Ethan.
And another person.
The person left untouched was Clara.
William slowly turned.
“She was never helping us.””
At that moment, the mansion lights went out.
A voice came from the darkness.
“You always were smarter than I expected.””
Clara stepped into the doorway.
No fear.
No tears.
Only calm.
William stared at her.
“You.””
Clara smiled faintly.
“My brother was weak.””
Emma moved closer to William.
“You used him.””
“Yes.””
Clara looked around the room.
“Daniel wanted money. Isabella wanted power. But I wanted something bigger.””
William’s jaw tightened.
“You wanted my family.””
Clara smiled.
“I wanted what my family deserved.””
She revealed an old document.
“My grandfather built the Sterling empire.””
William shook his head.
“Your grandfather was fired for fraud.””
“By your grandfather.””
Clara’s eyes hardened.
“The Sterling family destroyed mine.””
She stepped closer.
“So I destroyed yours.””
William looked at her with disgust.
“You locked a child behind a wall.””
Clara’s expression barely changed.
“Ethan was never supposed to suffer.””
William’s anger exploded.
“He was five!””
Clara looked away.
“The plan changed.””
“Because Isabella enjoyed hurting him?””
Clara didn’t answer.
That was enough.
William understood.
She had created the monster.
Then lost control of it.
“You never wanted Ethan dead.””
Clara smiled.
“No.””
She looked toward the hidden room.
“I wanted him erased.””
Suddenly, Ethan’s voice echoed from the hallway.
“Daddy?””
William turned.
His heart stopped.
Ethan stood there.
Emma had followed him.
“Why is he here?”” Clara whispered.
Because for the first time, she looked afraid.
William stepped in front of his son.
“You underestimated one thing.””
“What?””
“He was never invisible.””
Sirens sounded outside.
Clara looked toward the window.
Police surrounded the mansion.
William had activated the emergency signal before entering the room.
Clara’s expression collapsed.
But then she smiled.
“You think this ends with me?””
William stared.
“What does that mean?””
Clara laughed softly.
“You still don’t know who signed the original inheritance papers.””
A detective entered.
“Ms. Whitmore, you’re under arrest.””
As they took her away, she looked back at William.
“You saved your son.””
May you like
A pause.
“But you haven’t saved your family.””
