Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Photograph
William stared at the photograph on his phone until the screen went dark.
Then he turned it back on.
Again.
And again.
Because sometimes the mind refuses to accept what the eyes have already seen.
The man standing beside Isabella inside the Sterling mansion was not a stranger.
It was Daniel Whitmore.
William’s closest friend.
His business partner.
The man who had stood beside him at his wedding.
The man who had hugged him when Ethan disappeared and whispered, “We’ll find your son.””
For six months, Daniel had sat across from William’s dining table, drinking coffee, pretending to help search for Ethan.
Now William knew he had been hiding something.
Emma watched his face carefully.
“William…”
He didn’t answer.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
“Daniel knew.””
The words came out quietly.
Emma looked at the photograph again.
“Are you sure?””
“I know that watch.””
William pointed at the image.
“Daniel never takes it off. His father gave it to him.””
A terrible silence filled the kitchen.
The kind of silence that came before a storm.
William stood.
“I need to find him.””
Emma reached for his arm.
“Don’t go alone.””
William looked at her.
“He helped someone take my son.””
“And if he’s dangerous?””
William looked toward the staircase.
Upstairs, Ethan was sleeping.
A five-year-old child who had spent days trapped inside a wall.
A child who still woke up crying whenever the room became too dark.
William’s expression hardened.
“Then I need to know exactly who I’m dealing with.””
Daniel Whitmore’s office was located in downtown Sterling Tower, a glass building that reflected the city lights like a mirror.
William entered without an appointment.
The receptionist immediately stood.
“Mr. Sterling, Mr. Whitmore wasn’t expecting—”
“I know.””
William kept walking.
The receptionist stopped trying to block him.
Everyone in the building knew the look on William Sterling’s face.
It meant something had already broken.
Daniel was sitting behind his desk when William entered.
He looked surprised.
Then concerned.
“William?””
Daniel stood.
“What happened?””
William closed the door.
“You tell me.””
Daniel frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
William placed the photograph on the desk.
Daniel looked at it.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
William saw it.
The hesitation.
The fear.
“You know.””
Daniel slowly sat down.
“Where did you get that?””
“Answer the question.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“William…”
“No.””
William stepped closer.
“For six months, I thought my son was dead.””
Daniel looked away.
“I know.””
“You know?””
William’s voice cracked.
“You know what that feels like?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
William slammed his hand against the desk.
“My son was inside a wall!””
Daniel closed his eyes.
And that reaction told William everything.
“You knew about the wall.””
Daniel said nothing.
William’s anger turned cold.
“How long?””
Finally, Daniel whispered:
“Before Ethan disappeared.””
The room seemed to shrink.
William stared at him.
“Explain.””
Daniel looked like a man carrying a weight too heavy to hold.
“Isabella came to me months before.””
“Why?””
“She wanted information.””
“What information?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he opened a drawer.
Inside was a file.
He pushed it across the desk.
William opened it.
His blood ran cold.
It contained medical reports.
Legal documents.
Family records.
And a letter.
A letter written by Isabella.
William picked it up.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
The first line made his heart stop.
“I cannot allow Ethan to inherit what should belong to my family.””
William read the sentence again.
Then again.
“She wanted him gone.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“She believed Ethan was the only thing standing between her and control of the Sterling fortune.””
William looked up.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of her?””
Daniel looked at him.
“No.””
He paused.
“Of what I had already done.””
William froze.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
“I helped her.””
The confession hung between them.
William felt like the floor disappeared beneath him.
“You helped her hurt my son?””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head quickly.
“I helped her access records. I helped her understand the estate security system. I thought she was trying to get custody.””
William stared.
“You thought?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I never believed she would imprison him.””
William grabbed the file.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“I expect you to hate me.””
Before William could answer, Daniel’s phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
William noticed.
“Who is it?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
William took the phone.
The message contained only one sentence.
*You should have stayed silent.*
And underneath it was a photograph.
A photograph of Ethan sleeping upstairs in the Sterling mansion.
William’s blood turned cold.
May you like
Someone was watching them.
Someone was still inside his home.
