The Boy Behind the Wall / Chapter 2 / 7

Chapter 2: The Wife’s Secret

The slap echoed through the Sterling mansion like a gunshot.

Isabella stumbled backward, one hand flying to her cheek.

For the first time in years, her perfect expression broke.

William Sterling stood in front of her, his breathing heavy, his eyes burning with disbelief.

“Why?”” he demanded.

The word carried more pain than anger.

“Why was my son behind that wall?””

Isabella slowly lowered her hand.

“You’re overreacting.””

William stared at her.

“Overreacting?””

His voice rose.

“My five-year-old son was trapped inside a brick hole!””

Ethan was still in William’s arms.

The boy had his face pressed against his father’s shoulder, too afraid to look at Isabella.

Emma stood nearby, shaken.

She had seen William angry before.

She had seen him fire executives.

She had seen him destroy business deals.

But she had never seen him look this broken.

Isabella straightened her dress.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

“He was misbehaving.””

William’s expression changed.

“Misbehaving?””

“Yes.””

Isabella folded her arms.

“He was becoming difficult. He refused to listen. He was having emotional problems.””

Emma looked at her in disgust.

“You put a child in a wall because he was difficult?””

Isabella turned sharply.

“Stay out of this.””

“No,” William said.

His voice was quiet now.

Dangerously quiet.

“Emma stays.””

Isabella looked at him.

“You are choosing a servant over your wife?””

“I am choosing my son.””

The words landed harder than the slap.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Ethan whispered:

“Daddy…”

William looked down.

“I’m here.””

“She said you stopped looking for me.””

William’s face changed.

“What?””

Ethan’s small fingers grabbed his shirt.

“She said you forgot me.””

William looked at Isabella.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like he was seeing a stranger.

“I never stopped searching.””

Isabella’s jaw tightened.

William continued.

“I hired investigators. I searched every hospital, every school, every place I thought you could have taken him.””

“I told you he ran away.””

“I believed my wife.””

That sentence seemed to hurt him more than anything else.

Because it was the truth.

For six months, William had lived with a nightmare.

Ethan had disappeared after an afternoon walk in the garden.

The police found no evidence.

No ransom note.

No footprints.

No witnesses.

Only Isabella’s tearful explanation.

She claimed Ethan had wandered away.

She claimed she was devastated.

She cried in front of cameras.

She accepted sympathy from friends.

And William believed her.

Because she was his wife.

Because she was Ethan’s mother.

Because the alternative was impossible.

Until today.

Emma walked toward the wall.

“There was a bowl inside.””

William looked at her.

“A bowl?””

“For a dog.””

Silence.

Isabella’s eyes narrowed.

“That proves nothing.””

Emma shook her head.

“It proves someone wanted him treated like an animal.””

William’s hand tightened around Ethan.

Isabella stepped forward.

“You’re making this dramatic.””

William looked at her.

“No.””

His voice dropped.

“You did.””

The front doors suddenly opened.

Several police officers entered the hallway.

William had already called them before confronting Isabella.

Isabella’s face changed.

“You called the police?””

William didn’t answer.

One officer approached.

“Mrs. Sterling, we need you to come with us and answer some questions.””

She laughed softly.

“You think I’m going to be arrested because a housekeeper made up a story?””

Nobody responded.

Because everyone was looking at the evidence behind the painting.

The broken latch.

The hidden chamber.

The empty bottle.

The dog bowl.

Isabella looked at Ethan.

For one brief second, the mask disappeared.

Something cold flashed in her eyes.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

William noticed.

And that frightened him more.

Later that night, Ethan slept in William’s room.

He refused to let go of his father’s hand.

The mansion, once filled with expensive decorations and empty conversations, felt different.

Like it was hiding secrets in every corner.

Emma sat in the kitchen with a cup of untouched tea.

She couldn’t stop thinking about what she had found.

A child didn’t end up behind a wall by accident.

Someone had planned it.

Someone had prepared the space.

Someone had known exactly where nobody would look.

At midnight, William entered the kitchen.

He looked exhausted.

“She did something else,” he said.

Emma looked up.

“What?””

William placed a folder on the table.

“I found this in her office.””

Emma opened it.

Inside were documents.

Property records.

Bank statements.

And a photograph.

Her breath caught.

The photograph showed William’s family tree.

But one name had been circled in red.

Ethan Sterling.

Emma looked at William.

“Why would she mark his name?””

William didn’t answer.

Because he already knew something was terribly wrong.

Then his phone rang.

The number was unknown.

William answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Mr. Sterling…”

William froze.

“Who is this?””

The voice whispered:

“If you want your son to survive, you need to know the truth about why Isabella married you.””

The call ended.

William stared at the screen.

And then the phone received one final message.

A photograph.

May you like

A photograph of Isabella meeting someone inside the Sterling mansion months before Ethan disappeared.

And the man standing beside her was someone William trusted completely.
