Chapter 7: The Hidden Room Upstairs
William returned to the mansion faster than he had ever driven in his life.
The photograph remained open on his phone.
Ethan sleeping.
His small body curled beneath a blanket.
Taken from inside the house.
Not outside.
Not from a distance.
Inside.
Emma met him at the front entrance.
“What happened?””
William showed her the image.
Her face immediately drained of color.
“Someone was here?””
“Yes.””
They moved through the mansion silently.
Every shadow felt different.
Every corner looked suspicious.
William reached Ethan’s bedroom.
The door was slightly open.
He stopped.
Emma noticed.
“What?””
William pointed.
“I always close that door.””
Emma’s hand moved toward the handle.
William stopped her.
“Wait.””
He looked around.
Then slowly opened it.
Ethan was still asleep.
Safe.
Alive.
William rushed forward.
“Ethan.””
The boy woke immediately.
“Daddy?””
William hugged him.
“I’m here.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Did Isabella come back?””
William’s heart broke.
“No.””
“Promise?””
William held his face gently.
“I promise.””
Ethan looked toward the doorway.
Then whispered:
“She wasn’t alone.””
William froze.
“What did you say?””
Ethan rubbed his eyes.
“When Isabella put me away, someone else helped her.””
Emma stepped closer.
“Who?””
Ethan looked scared.
“I don’t know his name.””
William knelt.
“Tell me what you remember.””
The boy thought carefully.
“He wore a black coat.””
“Anything else?””
“He had a scar.””
William and Emma exchanged a glance.
“Where?””
Ethan touched his eyebrow.
“Here.””
William stood slowly.
Daniel.
Daniel had a small scar above his eyebrow from a childhood accident.
But before William could speak, Ethan continued.
“He called her ‘Mrs. Sterling.’”
William frowned.
“That’s not strange.””
“But he wasn’t nice.””
Ethan’s voice became smaller.
“He told Isabella she had to hurry.””
William felt anger rising again.
“Hurry for what?””
Ethan looked down.
“He said…”
The boy swallowed.
“He said, ‘Once the boy is gone, everything belongs to us.’”
The room went silent.
Everything.
Not just money.
Not just custody.
Everything.
That afternoon, William searched Isabella’s private office with investigators.
Behind a bookshelf, they found another hidden compartment.
Inside were documents proving Isabella had been planning for years.
She had created fake insurance policies.
Transferred secret funds.
Opened accounts under false names.
She wasn’t reacting to Ethan’s disappearance.
She had designed it.
But one document stopped William completely.
It was a marriage agreement.
Not between Isabella and William.
Between Isabella and Daniel.
Signed three years before William married Isabella.
Emma stared.
“They were together?””
William looked at the dates.
The agreement had been created before Ethan was born.
Before Isabella entered his life.
Before the wedding.
The truth became painfully clear.
The marriage had never been about love.
It had been an operation.
A plan.
A way into the Sterling family.
A way to reach the inheritance.
William’s hands shook.
“All this time…”
Emma looked at him.
“William?””
He stared at the papers.
“She never wanted to be my wife.””
His voice was barely audible.
“She wanted to become the mother of the Sterling heir.””
A detective entered the room.
“Mr. Sterling.””
William looked up.
“We found something else.””
The detective placed a small envelope on the desk.
“It was hidden inside the wall cavity where Ethan was kept.””
William opened it.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting belonged to Daniel.
Only one sentence was written.
*If you are reading this, then Isabella failed.*
William’s eyes narrowed.
He turned the page.
There was more.
But before he could read it, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman’s voice whispered.
“William…”
He froze.
Because he recognized it.
“Isabella?””
A soft laugh came through the phone.
“You think you found the truth.””
William stood.
“Where are you?””
“You found my plan.””
Her voice became colder.
“But you haven’t found the reason.””
William gripped the phone.
“What reason?””
A pause.
Then Isabella said:
“The boy you saved is not the only secret in this family.””
The call ended.
And William realized something terrifying.

The wall had not been the beginning.
It had been the middle.
