Chapter 9: The Man Who Watched From the Shadows
The name felt impossible.
Thomas.
Darnell stared at the photograph.
His fingers went numb around the phone.
For sixteen years, Thomas Hayes had existed in his memory as a grave.
A framed picture.
A quiet funeral.
A man whose absence had shaped every decision Darnell made afterward.
And now someone was telling him that man was alive.
“No.””
The word escaped before he could stop it.
“No.””
Elena moved closer.
“Darnell…”
He looked at her.
“My father is dead.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
Not after everything.
Not after discovering that every truth in his life had been surrounded by lies.
Marcus looked at the photograph carefully.
“Where did you get this?””
Adrian swallowed.
“It came from the same number that sent the other message.””
Vivian stepped closer.
“Show me.””
Adrian handed her the phone.
She studied the image.
Then her expression changed.
“You know this place?””
Darnell looked at her.
“You recognize it?””
Vivian nodded slowly.
“That’s St. Catherine’s Hospital.””
Darnell frowned.
“So?””
Vivian looked at him.
“That was where you were born.””
The terrace went quiet again.
Darnell felt the weight of the words.
His birth.
His family.
His children.
Everything connected to that hospital.
Everything began there.
“What happened there?””
Vivian looked toward Loretta.
“She knows.””
Everyone turned.
Loretta closed her eyes.
For once, she didn’t deny it.
Darnell felt something inside him crack.
“Mom.””
She looked at him.
“I never wanted you to know this way.””
“There was another way?””
Her face fell.
He continued.
“You had sixteen years.””
The pain in his voice was impossible to ignore.
“You had sixteen years to tell me.””
Loretta looked down.
“I thought I could fix it.””
Darnell shook his head.
“You don’t fix people by stealing their choices.””
The sentence made her flinch.
Because it was true.
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
“The person who sent this wants us to find Thomas.””
Darnell looked at him.
“Why?””
Vivian answered.
“Because Thomas knows the rest of the story.””
“What rest?””
She looked at Adrian.
“The part about what happened after the twins were born.””
Adrian went still.
Darnell noticed.
“You know something?””
The boy hesitated.
“I know pieces.””
“What pieces?””
Adrian looked uncomfortable.
“Growing up, I was told my mother died.””
Elena’s face changed.
“What?””
Adrian looked at her.
“I was told she abandoned me first.””
A painful silence followed.
Darnell looked at Loretta.
“Who raised him?””
Loretta said nothing.
Adrian answered.
“A woman named Claire.””
Darnell frowned.
“Who is Claire?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Vivian quietly said:
“Thomas’s sister.””
Darnell felt his stomach drop.
“Another person connected to all this.””
“Yes.””
“And she knew?””
Vivian nodded.
“She knew everything.””
Adrian looked away.
“So I wasn’t just hidden.””
“No.””
Marcus’s voice was quiet.
“You were protected.””
Adrian looked at him.
“From what?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
And that scared Darnell.
For years, everyone had claimed to know what was best.
Everyone had made decisions.
But nobody had truly understood the consequences.
Darnell turned toward Loretta.
“Where is Thomas?””
She looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not.””
“You lied for sixteen years.””
Her eyes filled.
“I thought he was dead.””
The answer surprised everyone.
Darnell stared.
“You thought?””
Loretta nodded.
“The last time I saw Thomas…”
She stopped.
Her voice became smaller.
“He was bleeding.””
The terrace went silent.
Darnell looked at Vivian.
“Someone hurt him?””
Vivian’s expression darkened.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then the sound of gravel moving outside the gate interrupted them.
Everyone turned.
A vehicle was approaching.
Not fast.
Not threatening.
Almost carefully.
The car stopped.
The engine turned off.
A few seconds passed.
Then the driver’s door opened.
An older man stepped out.
Darnell forgot how to breathe.
The man looked thinner.
Older.
His hair was mostly gray.
But the face—
The face was the one Darnell had seen his entire childhood.
The face from family photographs.
The face from memories.
Thomas Hayes.
Alive.
The man stood at the edge of the driveway.
His eyes found Darnell.
And tears immediately filled them.
“My boy.””
Darnell couldn’t move.
Nobody could.
Thomas slowly walked closer.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words broke something.
Because Darnell had spent years imagining this moment.
And in every version, he had been angry.
He had screamed.
He had demanded answers.
But now he was just standing there.
Looking at a ghost.
“You’re alive.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
Darnell’s voice shook.
“Why?””
Thomas looked down.
“Because I was trying to keep you alive too.””
The answer made Darnell angry.
“Everyone says that.””
Thomas stopped.
Darnell stepped forward.
“My mother said she protected me.””
His voice rose.
“Elena said she protected me.””
He looked around.
“Everyone protected me by lying to me.””
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“You’re right.””
The simple admission stunned him.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just acceptance.
Thomas looked at Adrian.
Then Kiara.
Then Elena.
“I failed all of you.””
Elena covered her mouth.
“Thomas…”
He looked at her.
“I should have come back sooner.””
Darnell stared.
“What happened?””
Thomas took a deep breath.
“The night Adrian disappeared, I found out someone was hunting your family.””
“Who?””
Thomas looked at Vivian.
Then Marcus.
Then Loretta.
“Someone inside the family.””
Everyone froze.
Darnell’s eyes moved toward Loretta.
But Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
The answer surprised him.
“No?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Your mother made terrible choices.””
Loretta looked away.
“But she wasn’t the person behind everything.””
Darnell frowned.
“Then who?””
Thomas looked toward the house.
The old estate.
The place where decades of secrets had been hidden.
“The person who started this died years ago.””
Vivian whispered:
“Richard.””
Thomas nodded.
“Richard Hale.””
Darnell felt confused.
“But Richard was family.””
“Yes.””
Thomas looked at him.
“And that was why nobody suspected him.””
He stepped closer.
“Richard believed the Hale bloodline belonged to him.””
Vivian’s face tightened.
“He was obsessed.””
Thomas nodded.
“He believed Darnell’s birth threatened everything.””
Darnell stared.
“Why?””
“Because your biological father changed the inheritance rules.””
The words hit.
“Changed?””
Thomas nodded.
“Your biological father left everything to his children.””
He looked at Adrian and Kiara.
“Not the adults.””
Darnell understood.
The children.
The twins.
The future.
“That’s why he wanted them.””
“Yes.””
Thomas looked at Adrian.
“He tried to take both.””
Elena’s face went pale.
“But Adrian was the one he got.””
Thomas nodded.
“And Kiara survived because someone intervened.””
Darnell looked at Loretta.
His mother looked down.
“I took Kiara.””
The confession was quiet.
Everyone stared.
“Why?””
Loretta’s eyes filled.
“Because Richard was looking for both children.””
Darnell shook his head.
“And Adrian?””
Thomas answered.
“I got him away.””
Darnell looked at him.
“You?””
Thomas nodded.
“I faked my death because Richard believed I was gone.””
A thousand questions formed.
But one mattered most.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Because Richard wasn’t alone.””
The air changed.
“Who was with him?””
Thomas’s expression became serious.
“The person who is still helping him.””
Darnell frowned.
“But Richard is dead.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then who?””
Thomas looked at the family.
At everyone standing on the terrace.
Then his eyes stopped on one person.
Loretta.
“No.””
Darnell immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Thomas’s expression was full of regret.
“I’m sorry.””
He pulled a small file from his coat.
Inside was a photograph.
A recent photograph.
A person standing beside Richard Hale before his death.
A person Darnell recognized.
A person who had been near his family for years.
Thomas handed it to him.
Darnell looked down.
And his heart stopped.
Because the person beside Richard was not a stranger.
It was someone he had invited into his home.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who had held Kiara’s hand.
Someone who had smiled while destroying his family.
May you like
Thomas whispered:
“The person who helped Richard was Simone Price.””
