Chapter 7: The Brother Who Chose the Lie

The recording ended.

But nobody moved.

The last sentence remained hanging over the terrace like smoke.

*“The person who helped Loretta was Elena’s own brother.””*

Darnell stared at Marcus.

The man who had walked into his life carrying answers.

The man who had claimed to be the person who helped Elena survive.

The man who had brought Adrian back.

The man who had stood beside the truth.

Now everyone was wondering the same thing.

Was he part of the lie?

Marcus’s face had gone pale.

“Darnell…”

Darnell raised a hand.

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But it stopped him.

“No more explanations before the truth.””

Marcus swallowed.

“You deserve to be angry.””

“Angry?””

Darnell laughed once.

It sounded empty.

“My entire life has been rearranged in one afternoon.””

He looked around.

“My mother lied to me.””

Then at Elena.

“My wife disappeared because of those lies.””

Then at Adrian.

“My son grew up believing I abandoned him.””

His eyes returned to Marcus.

“And now I find out the person who helped destroy my family was standing here pretending to save it.””

Marcus looked down.

“I never pretended.””

“Then what did you do?””

The question struck harder.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I made the wrong choice.””

Elena stepped forward.

“Marcus.””

He looked at her.

The pain between them was obvious.

Not the pain of strangers.

The pain of family.

Darnell noticed.

“You knew?””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why does he look like someone who hurt you?””

She hesitated.

Because the answer was complicated.

Because family was rarely simple.

“He did.””

Marcus looked away.

Darnell stared.

“What?””

Elena’s voice became softer.

“Marcus helped my mother when I was younger.””

Darnell frowned.

“Your mother?””

“Yes.””

She looked at Loretta.

Then back at him.

“This wasn’t the first time someone in our family tried to control my life.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“I was young.””

Elena’s expression hardened.

“You were twenty-eight.””

“And scared.””

“You were scared?””

Her voice cracked.

“I was the one being threatened.””

The terrace became quiet.

Darnell looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Marcus took a deep breath.

“My father and Loretta had business connections.””

Darnell looked at him.

“What kind?””

“The kind where people owed favors.””

Marcus glanced toward the old estate.

“Your grandfather built his company through relationships. Some good. Some not.””

Darnell frowned.

“You’re saying my family was involved with criminals?””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I’m saying your family was close enough to dangerous people that the line became impossible to see.””

Loretta interrupted.

“That’s enough.””

Everyone looked at her.

Marcus’s expression changed.

“You don’t get to tell me when it’s enough.””

For the first time, Darnell saw Marcus angry.

Not defensive.

Not guilty.

Angry.

“You ruined all of us.””

Loretta stared.

“I protected this family.””

“No.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You protected yourself.””

The words landed.

Darnell looked at Loretta.

His mother had spent years convincing him she was the strongest person in the room.

But now he saw something else.

Fear.

She wasn’t afraid of losing power.

She was afraid of losing the story.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“Did you know where I was the whole time?””

Marcus looked at him.

The question changed his entire expression.

“No.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Then why did you let me believe nobody wanted me?””

Marcus looked broken.

“Because I was told if I spoke, you would disappear again.””

Darnell stared.

“Who told you?””

Nobody answered.

He already knew.

Loretta.

But something didn’t make sense.

“You’re telling me my mother controlled all of you?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Marcus looked toward the house.

“Because she had something nobody else had.””

“What?””

“Proof.””

The answer confused him.

“Proof of what?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then reached into his folder.

He pulled out an old photograph.

Not a document.

Not a recording.

A picture.

He handed it to Darnell.

Darnell looked down.

The image showed four people.

His father.

Loretta.

Marcus’s father.

And another man.

A man Darnell recognized immediately.

His stomach dropped.

“No.””

Elena looked over.

“What?””

Darnell’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus watched him carefully.

“You know him?””

Darnell couldn’t answer.

Because he did.

The man in the photograph had appeared in his childhood memories.

Always around his father.

Always smiling.

Always trusted.

A family friend.

Someone who had attended holidays.

Someone who had carried Darnell on his shoulders when he was little.

His name was Richard Hale.

And he was the last person Darnell expected to be connected to any of this.

“Richard died years ago,” Darnell whispered.

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“What does he have to do with Adrian?””

Marcus looked at Loretta.

“Everything.””

Loretta’s face tightened.

“Don’t.””

Darnell turned.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

“Please.””

That word stopped him.

Not because he forgave her.

Because he had never heard her say it.

Not once.

Not in his entire life.

Loretta Hayes did not ask.

She demanded.

She commanded.

She controlled.

But now she was pleading.

Darnell’s voice softened slightly.

“What did Richard do?””

Loretta looked away.

Marcus answered.

“He was the reason Adrian was taken.””

Elena gasped.

Darnell stared.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“Because Richard believed your family line mattered.””

“What does that mean?””

Marcus sighed.

“It means Richard believed one of your children would inherit something.””

Darnell frowned.

“Inherit what?””

Loretta closed her eyes.

Marcus continued.

“Your grandfather’s private accounts.””

Silence.

Darnell stared.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

“He had money?””

“More than people knew.””

Darnell shook his head.

“No.””

Marcus nodded.

“Your grandfather hid assets because he knew people would try to take them.””

Darnell looked at Loretta.

“And you knew.””

She didn’t answer.

“Didn’t you?””

Finally, she spoke.

“Yes.””

The admission was quiet.

But devastating.

Darnell looked at Adrian.

“So this was never about protecting him.””

Loretta looked at him.

“I thought if I kept Adrian hidden, nobody would find him.””

“Nobody?””

“Richard’s people.””

Marcus immediately corrected her.

“Richard was dead when Adrian disappeared.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus’s expression became serious.

“That means Loretta wasn’t protecting Adrian from Richard.””

Darnell felt a chill.

“Then who?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian slowly pulled out his phone.

“I know.””

Everyone turned.

Darnell looked at him.

“What?””

Adrian unlocked the screen.

“I found something.””

He showed them a message.

A text from an unknown number.

One message.

One sentence.

*Your grandmother lied about who she was protecting you from.*

Darnell felt his stomach drop.

Adrian continued.

“I received this three weeks ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

“Because I thought it was a trap.””

Darnell looked at him.

“And now?””

Adrian looked toward the road.

“Now I think whoever sent it wanted us all here today.””

A car engine suddenly sounded beyond the gates.

Everyone turned.

Another vehicle was approaching.

Not the same one.

A dark sedan moved slowly up the driveway.

Darnell felt every instinct he had as a firefighter awaken.

Something was wrong.

The driver’s door opened.

A woman stepped out.

She was older.

Elegant.

Confident.

And she looked directly at Loretta.

Loretta froze.

Darnell noticed.

Because his mother looked at this woman the way everyone else looked at her.

With fear.

The woman walked closer.

Then smiled.

“Loretta.””

Nobody answered.

The woman’s eyes moved across the family.

To Elena.

To Adrian.

To Kiara.

Then finally to Darnell.

“So this is the son you spent sixteen years lying to.””

Darnell stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The woman smiled.

“My name is Vivian Hale.””

The name hit the terrace like thunder.

Darnell went still.

Because he knew that last name.

Richard Hale.

The man in the photograph.

The family friend.

The man his father trusted.

Vivian looked at Adrian.

“You have no idea what your grandmother did to keep you alive.””

Then she looked at Loretta.

“And you have no idea what I’m about to reveal.””

Loretta whispered:

“Vivian, don’t.””

Vivian smiled.

“I’ve waited sixteen years.””

She reached into her purse.

And pulled out a sealed envelope.

“Because this belongs to Darnell.””

She handed it to him.

On the front were six words.

May you like

Six words that made his blood run cold.

*The truth about your real father.*
