Chapter 6: The Death That Wasn’t an Accident

The terrace became silent.

Not the uncomfortable silence of strangers watching an argument.

A deeper silence.

The kind that came when everyone realized the truth was about to change everything they believed.

Darnell stared at Loretta.

His fingers tightened around the letter from his father.

“You knew?””

Loretta didn’t answer.

That was becoming her pattern.

Silence.

Delay.

Control.

But Darnell was no longer the son who waited for his mother’s explanations.

He was a father.

A father who had just learned his children had been taken from him.

“Mom.””

His voice was quieter now.

That frightened her more than shouting would have.

“What did you know?””

Loretta looked around at the guests.

At the people who had once admired her.

At the family members who had trusted her.

Then she looked at Adrian.

At Kiara.

At Elena.

And finally at Darnell.

“Everyone needs to leave.””

Nobody moved.

Darnell shook his head.

“No.””

“Darnell.””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“You don’t get to decide when this conversation ends.””

Loretta’s face hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re asking.””

“I’m asking what happened to my father.””

The question hung there.

For years, Darnell had accepted the official story.

A heart attack.

Sudden.

Unexpected.

Unfair.

His father had died during a business trip, and Loretta had handled everything afterward.

The funeral.

The paperwork.

The estate.

The grief.

She had always told him the same thing.

“Your father’s heart gave out.””

But now he wondered.

Had it?

Marcus watched Loretta carefully.

“She never told you, did she?””

Darnell looked at him.

“Told me what?””

Marcus glanced at Elena.

Then Adrian.

“Your father discovered the truth before he died.””

Loretta’s voice sharpened.

“Stop.””

Marcus ignored her.

“He found out she had changed the hospital records.””

Darnell looked at his mother.

“What records?””

Nobody answered.

His patience broke.

“What records?””

Elena stepped forward.

“The birth records.””

Darnell turned.

“What?””

Marcus nodded.

“Your father discovered that Kiara and Adrian’s records had been altered.””

Darnell looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because someone wanted Adrian erased.””

The word hit him.

Erased.

Not hidden.

Not protected.

Erased.

Darnell looked toward his son.

Adrian stood quietly, but his face had changed.

He had heard this before.

“You knew,” Darnell said.

Adrian nodded.

“I found out last year.””

Darnell looked at him.

“And you carried that alone?””

Adrian shrugged slightly.

“I was used to it.””

The answer hurt.

Because it revealed something Darnell hated admitting.

His son had learned how to survive without him.

Loretta stepped forward.

“You’re all acting like I’m some monster.””

Darnell looked at her.

“You changed my children’s lives.””

“I saved them.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because nobody understands.””

“Then explain.””

Loretta’s eyes filled with frustration.

“I knew things about Elena that you didn’t.””

Elena looked at her.

“You knew lies.””

“No.””

Loretta pointed at her.

“You were unstable.””

Darnell immediately turned.

“Enough.””

The command was sharp.

Everyone stopped.

He looked at his mother.

“You do not get to rewrite her anymore.””

Loretta stared.

“She left.””

“She was forced.””

“She disappeared.””

“Because you threatened her.””

“You only know her side.””

Darnell looked at Elena.

Then back.

“And your side is what?””

Loretta said nothing.

That was the first time Darnell saw it clearly.

His mother didn’t have an explanation.

She had excuses.

Marcus pulled another paper from the folder.

“This is from the hospital.””

Loretta’s face changed.

Darnell noticed.

“What is it?””

Marcus handed it over.

“The original record.””

Darnell looked down.

The page was old.

Yellowed.

But the information was clear.

Two births.

Two children.

Two names.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Because one line had been written over.

Changed.

Altered.

But beneath it, the original ink was still visible.

Adrian Hayes.

Not Adrian Vale.

His son had never belonged to another family.

Someone had stolen his name.

Darnell looked at Loretta.

“You changed his last name.””

Loretta remained silent.

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because I had to.””

“No.””

Darnell shook his head.

“You wanted to.””

Loretta’s expression broke slightly.

“You don’t understand what was happening.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked at Adrian.

“I thought I was saving him.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“From what?””

Loretta looked at him.

“From becoming like your father.””

Darnell froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

The words came out suddenly.

“You think your father was perfect?””

Nobody answered.

Loretta continued.

“He had secrets.””

Darnell stared.

“What secrets?””

Loretta looked at Marcus.

“Your father knew people who could destroy this family.””

Marcus’s face tightened.

“That’s not true.””

“You don’t know everything.””

“I know enough.””

Loretta turned back to Darnell.

“Your father found out about the hospital records because he was investigating.””

“Investigating what?””

She hesitated.

“Your grandfather’s company.””

Darnell frowned.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

A cold feeling moved through him.

“This has nothing to do with my children.””

Loretta looked at him.

“Everything is connected.””

The sentence made everyone uncomfortable.

Darnell looked at Elena.

“Did you know any of this?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Not even about my father?””

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“I only knew your mother was hiding something.””

Darnell looked down.

For the first time, he realized how carefully Loretta had built the wall around him.

She hadn’t just hidden Adrian.

She had controlled information.

Controlled people.

Controlled the story.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Your father left evidence.””

Darnell looked at him.

“What evidence?””

“A recording.””

Loretta immediately reacted.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Darnell noticed.

“You know about it.””

Loretta’s face went pale.

Marcus nodded.

“She knows.””

Darnell looked between them.

“Where is it?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian answered.

“I know where.””

Everyone turned.

The boy reached into his jacket pocket.

He pulled out a small black device.

Darnell stared.

“What is that?””

Adrian looked at Loretta.

“Something she spent years trying to find.””

Loretta stepped forward.

“Adrian, give me that.””

“No.””

“You don’t understand what’s on it.””

Adrian looked at her.

“I understand enough.””

He handed the device to Darnell.

His hands trembled slightly.

“Your grandfather gave this to me.””

Darnell looked shocked.

“Your grandfather?””

Adrian nodded.

“Before he died.””

Darnell looked at Loretta.

“My father contacted him?””

“No.””

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

“He contacted me.””

The terrace froze.

Darnell stared.

“How?””

Adrian looked down.

“Because he knew I existed.””

A painful silence followed.

“My grandfather knew about me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Adrian looked at Loretta.

“Because she stopped him.””

Darnell closed his eyes.

The betrayal kept growing.

Layer after layer.

He pressed the button on the device.

Static filled the terrace.

Then an old voice appeared.

His father’s voice.

Darnell nearly dropped it.

“If you are hearing this, then I am gone.””

Loretta’s face went white.

The recording continued.

“I need my son to know that the accident was not an accident.””

Darnell stopped breathing.

The world narrowed.

His father’s voice continued.

“Loretta discovered I was searching for Adrian’s records. She knew I intended to tell Darnell everything.””

A pause.

Then the words that changed the entire family forever.

“She threatened me.””

Loretta whispered:

“No.””

The recording continued.

“She told me if I exposed the truth, Darnell would lose both his children.””

Darnell looked at his mother.

His own voice barely worked.

“Mom…”

The recording continued.

“And the worst part is…”

Static cracked.

Everyone leaned closer.

Then the voice returned.

“The person who helped Loretta hide Adrian was not a stranger.””

Darnell felt his heart pound.

The recording ended with one final sentence.

A name.

A name nobody expected.

A name that made Marcus step backward.

A name that made Elena cover her mouth.

A name Darnell had heard before.

May you like

Because it belonged to someone standing only a few feet away.

*“The person who helped Loretta was Elena’s own brother.””*
