Chapter 5: The Boy Who Knew Everything

The man’s words stayed in the air.

“He wants to know why his grandmother abandoned him.””

Nobody moved.

Not Loretta.

Not Darnell.

Not even Elena.

The autumn wind swept across the terrace, carrying the smell of burned leather from the fire pit and the faint sweetness of the ruined birthday cake still lying on the stones.

A birthday party had become an investigation.

A family reunion had become a confrontation.

And somewhere beyond those gates was a boy who had spent sixteen years wondering why his father never came for him.

Darnell stepped forward.

“Where is he?””

The man looked at him carefully.

“My name is Thomas Reed.””

“I didn’t ask your name.””

Darnell’s voice was controlled, but everyone could hear the pain underneath it.

“I asked where my son is.””

Thomas glanced toward the driveway.

“He’s waiting.””

“Why?””

The question came out before Darnell could stop it.

Why wasn’t Adrian running toward him?

Why wasn’t he angry?

Why wasn’t he asking questions himself?

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Because Adrian doesn’t know if you’ll accept him.””

Darnell felt those words hit harder than any accusation.

Sixteen years.

A child growing up believing his father had forgotten him.

A child who had probably looked at family photos and wondered why he wasn’t there.

Elena covered her mouth.

“Oh God.””

Darnell looked at her.

“You knew?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I knew he was alive. I knew Marcus had found him. But I didn’t know where he was living.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“That was the truth. Elena and I searched for years.””

Darnell looked between them.

“And you never found him?””

Marcus looked down.

“We found pieces.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means every time we got close, someone moved him.””

Darnell’s eyes went to Loretta.

She looked away.

That was enough.

He turned toward his mother.

“Who moved him?””

Loretta’s face hardened.

“You’re looking at this the wrong way.””

Darnell stared.

“My son was taken from me.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

Loretta stepped forward.

“You think I stole him because you’re angry.””

“Because you did.””

“I protected him.””

Darnell shook his head.

“You keep saying that word.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Protection doesn’t look like hiding a child from his father.””

Loretta’s eyes flashed.

“You weren’t ready.””

The sentence made him stop.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

Darnell laughed softly.

A painful, disbelieving sound.

“You decided I wasn’t ready to be a father?””

Loretta looked at him.

“You were young.””

“I was thirty.””

“You were reckless.””

“I was a firefighter.””

“You ran toward danger because you thought you could save everyone.””

Darnell stared.

“And that bothered you?””

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“That scared me.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Because beneath the lies, there was something else.

A twisted version of love.

The kind that destroyed the thing it was trying to protect.

Darnell looked away.

“You don’t get to call this love.””

Loretta’s eyes filled slightly.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

He pointed toward the driveway.

“I don’t.””

The sound of footsteps interrupted them.

Everyone turned.

A teenage boy stood near the garden path.

Darnell forgot every word he had planned to say.

Because the boy was real.

Not a photograph.

Not a document.

Not a secret.

Real.

He wore a dark hoodie beneath a gray jacket. His hands were in his pockets. His posture was guarded.

But his eyes—

Darnell recognized those eyes.

The boy looked at him.

And neither of them moved.

Elena whispered:

“Adrian.””

The boy’s face changed.

He looked at her.

“Mom.””

One word.

One impossible word.

Elena took a step.

Then stopped.

Because Adrian wasn’t seven anymore.

He wasn’t the baby she remembered holding.

He was a young man carrying years she never witnessed.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Adrian looked down.

“I know.””

Darnell’s chest tightened.

He expected anger.

He expected accusations.

But Adrian looked tired.

Not cruel.

Just tired.

Thomas walked closer.

“Adrian, this is your father.””

The boy looked at Darnell.

“I know.””

Darnell swallowed.

“You know?””

Adrian nodded.

“I’ve known for a while.””

The answer shocked him.

“What?””

Adrian looked toward Loretta.

“She told me.””

Everyone turned.

Loretta’s face changed.

“Adrian.””

“No.””

The boy’s voice was calm.

That made it worse.

“You don’t get to stop me anymore.””

Darnell watched his mother.

The woman who had always seemed impossible to defeat.

Now she looked afraid of a teenager.

“How long have you known?”” Darnell asked.

Adrian looked back at him.

“Two years.””

Darnell felt his heart drop.

“Two years?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t come?””

Adrian looked away.

“I wanted to.””

The honesty hurt.

“Then why didn’t you?””

The boy was quiet.

Then he answered.

“Because I thought you left me.””

Darnell froze.

“No.””

Adrian looked at him.

“That’s what I was told.””

“Who told you?””

The boy didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Everyone looked at Loretta.

Darnell closed his eyes.

The pattern was impossible to ignore.

Every road led back to her.

Adrian walked closer.

“You know what the worst part was?””

Darnell looked at him.

“What?””

“I didn’t hate you.””

The sentence surprised him.

“I tried to.””

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

“I wanted to hate you because it would have been easier.””

Darnell felt tears forming.

“But every time I saw you on the news after a rescue, every time I saw people calling you a hero, I wondered why a hero could save strangers but not his own son.””

Darnell looked down.

Because he had no answer.

Not one that mattered.

Adrian continued.

“I thought maybe I wasn’t worth finding.””

The words destroyed him.

Darnell shook his head immediately.

“No.””

Adrian looked at him.

“No?””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“You were always worth finding.””

The boy stared.

“I looked for you.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“You did?””

“Every day.””

The terrace became quiet.

Darnell stepped closer.

“I searched. I asked questions. I hired people. I thought your mother and I had lost you because of a hospital mistake.””

Adrian looked at Loretta.

“A hospital mistake?””

Darnell nodded.

“Your grandmother made sure I never knew.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“She told me you chose Kiara.””

The words cut deep.

Darnell looked at Kiara.

His daughter stood beside Elena, tears in her eyes.

“I never chose one child over another.””

Adrian looked at her.

Kiara stepped forward.

“I’m your sister.””

The boy stared.

Then slowly nodded.

“I know.””

Kiara wiped her face.

“I always wanted a brother.””

For the first time, Adrian almost smiled.

Almost.

But then Loretta spoke.

“Enough.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice had returned.

Cold.

Commanding.

“This family has suffered enough.””

Darnell looked at her.

“You mean your secrets.””

Loretta ignored him.

She looked at Adrian.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

Adrian faced her.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

“You think they’ll accept you?””

The words were cruel.

Darnell immediately stepped forward.

“Stop.””

But Adrian answered first.

“I’m not asking them to.””

Loretta blinked.

“I just want the truth.””

The statement silenced her.

Because she knew.

Truth was the one thing she could no longer control.

Marcus stepped forward and handed Darnell another document.

“This is why Adrian came today.””

Darnell looked at it.

“What is it?””

“Something we found in your father’s old records.””

Darnell frowned.

“My father?””

Marcus nodded.

“He knew about the children.””

Elena looked confused.

“How?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because he was the one who discovered what Loretta had done.””

Darnell opened the folder.

Inside was a letter.

Not from Elena.

Not from Loretta.

From his father.

The man who had died before he could explain anything.

Darnell read the first line.

My son,

If you are reading this, then your mother failed to keep the truth buried.

His hands tightened.

The next sentence made his blood run cold.

There was never an accident at the hospital.

Darnell looked up.

Marcus’s face was serious.

“What does it say?””

Darnell kept reading.

And then he saw the final sentence.

The sentence that changed everything.

*The child Loretta took was not the only thing she stole from you.*

Darnell slowly lowered the paper.

Because suddenly, the secret wasn’t just about Adrian.

It was about something else.

Something his mother had taken.

Something that had been hidden for sixteen years.

May you like

And Loretta’s next words confirmed his fear.

“You were never supposed to find out about your father’s death.””
