Chapter 8: My Father’s Final Game
I read my father’s letter six times.
Six times.
And every time, the same question remained.
Who else had betrayed me?
I thought I knew my enemies.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
Richard.
But my father’s words suggested something deeper.
Something older.
Something hidden.
Evelyn arrived the next morning.
The moment she saw Richard, she stopped.
Not surprised.
Afraid.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“Evelyn,” I said slowly.
She looked at me.
“Mara.””
Richard stepped back.
“You didn’t tell her.””
Evelyn’s face changed.
“Richard, don’t.””
My heart sank.
“Tell me what?””
Nobody answered.
That was when I knew.
The truth had been standing in front of me the entire time.
I just didn’t want to see it.
I turned toward Evelyn.
“What did you know?””
She closed her eyes.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
She looked at Richard.
Then at me.
“From the truth.””
I laughed.
A tired, painful laugh.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I placed my father’s letter on the table.
“My entire life, people have decided what I can handle.””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“No. Not yet.””
The room went silent.
“Tell me.””
She sat down.
“When your father died, there were missing documents.””
I frowned.
“What documents?””
“Ownership records.””
Richard nodded.
“Daniel didn’t steal them.””
I looked between them.
“Then who did?””
Evelyn hesitated.
Finally, she whispered:
“Your mother.””
The world stopped.
My mother.
A woman who died when I was sixteen.
A woman I spent years missing.
“No.””
Evelyn looked devastated.
“I wish it wasn’t true.””
Richard opened another file.
Inside were photographs.
My mother.
Richard.
Daniel.
Together.
Years ago.
I stared.
“How?””
Richard sighed.
“Your mother was involved in the original company disputes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“She loved you,” Richard said.
I looked at him.
“Then why?””
He looked down.
“Because she made a terrible choice.””
I sat slowly.
My entire family history felt like a room collapsing around me.
Daniel wasn’t the beginning.
He was just the latest chapter.
Evelyn reached across the table.
“Your father knew.””
I looked at her.
“He knew my mother betrayed him?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because he wanted you to remember her as your mother.””
I looked away.
That hurt more than I expected.
My father protected everyone.
Everyone except himself.
Then Vanessa called.
I almost didn’t answer.
But something told me to.
“Mara.””
Her voice sounded different.
“What happened?””
“I found something.””
“What?””
“Daniel’s backup files.””
My body went still.
“Where?””
“At his office.””
“You broke into his office?””
“No.””
She paused.
“He gave me access months ago.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he trusted me.””
A bitter silence.
Then she said:
“Mara, there’s something you need to see.””
An hour later, I met her.
She handed me a drive.
“I copied everything.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She looked ashamed.
“Because I owe you.””
I shook my head.
“You owe me nothing.””
“Yes, I do.””
She looked at the ground.
“I helped him hurt you.””
I didn’t answer.
Because she was right.
But she was also the only person who had handed me evidence without demanding anything.
I took the drive.
That night, I opened it.
Hundreds of files.
Emails.
Contracts.
Videos.
Then I found one folder.
The name made my heart stop.
*FINAL PLAN.*
I clicked.
Inside was a video.
Daniel appeared on screen.
Older.
Different.
Cold.
He was talking to someone.
Someone off-camera.
“I’ll have control once she signs.””
The other person asked:
“And if she refuses?””
Daniel smiled.
“Then we use the baby.””
My hands started shaking.
The video continued.
“And Vanessa?””
Daniel laughed.
“She thinks she’s the replacement.””
A pause.
“She’s just another tool.””
I stopped the video.
I couldn’t watch anymore.
But then I heard something behind me.
A voice.
A whisper.
“Mara.””
I turned.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
Her face was pale.
“You saw it.””
I nodded.
She looked like she was going to cry.
Then she said:
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Daniel wasn’t talking about your daughter.””
I frowned.
“Then who?””
May you like
Vanessa looked at the screen.
“He was talking about the child you never knew you had.””
