Chapter 7: The Price Of Betrayal
Daniel didn’t answer the phone.
He just stared at it.
The ringing filled the room.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Finally, it stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Then Richard said quietly:
“You should answer next time.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You did this.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“She did.””
Daniel turned toward me.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Not anger.
Fear.
“You called them?””
I held his gaze.
“Yes.””
His face twisted.
“When?””
“The night you walked into my house with her suitcase.””
Daniel looked confused.
“That fast?””
I nodded.
“You forgot something.””
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“I never needed three months to understand you.””
The silence after that was almost peaceful.
Because the truth was finally out.
Daniel spent the next hour trying every version of himself.
The victim.
The husband.
The businessman.
The desperate man.
None of them worked.
“Mara, please.””
I looked at him.
“Please what?””
“Think about our daughter.””
The moment he said it, something inside me turned cold.
Because he was still doing it.
Still using our child.
“You don’t get to say that.””
His expression softened.
“I love her.””
“You love what she represents.””
“That’s not true.””
I looked at him.
“If you loved her, you wouldn’t have risked destroying the stability of her life.””
He looked away.
Richard watched silently.
Vanessa sat in the corner, crying quietly.
Eventually, she spoke.
“I need to tell you something.””
Everyone looked at her.
She wiped her face.
“Daniel wasn’t just stealing from Mara.””
Daniel immediately snapped.
“Stop.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“He was planning to disappear.””
My eyes moved to Daniel.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“He had another passport.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
A small change.
But enough.
“He told me after the divorce was finalized, we would move overseas.””
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“You were going to leave?””
Daniel said nothing.
“You were going to take my company, my money, my daughter’s future, and disappear?””
“Mara—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I want you to hear yourself.””
He looked broken.
But I had learned something.
Broken people could still break others.
The investigators arrived the next morning.
Daniel was questioned.
Documents were collected.
Accounts were frozen.
The world he built around himself started collapsing piece by piece.
But Richard wasn’t finished.
That evening, he came to my house again.
“You need to know the whole truth.””
I was standing in my daughter’s room.
Watching her sleep.
“What truth?””
He looked at the crib.
“Your father didn’t trust Daniel.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
Richard’s voice lowered.
“He didn’t trust me either.””
I turned.
“What?””
Richard sighed.
“Your father discovered I had made mistakes.””
“What kind of mistakes?””
“The kind that Daniel used against me.””
I stared.
“So Daniel blackmailed you?””
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
Richard looked away.
“He threatened to expose my financial mistakes unless I helped him access your father’s company.””
I whispered:
“And you agreed?””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“Why tell me?””
“Because I’m tired of running.””
He handed me another envelope.
“This contains everything.””
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
My hands started shaking.
I hadn’t seen it in years.
The first line destroyed me.
*Mara, if you are reading this, it means the person I feared finally showed you who he was.*
I stopped breathing.
Richard looked away.
“He wrote that six months before he died.””
I read the next sentence.
*Your husband will tell you he loves you. Believe his words less than his actions.*
My eyes burned.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And my heart stopped.
Because my father had predicted everything.
The betrayal.
The company.
The divorce.
Even Vanessa.
But there was one sentence I couldn’t understand.
One sentence that made no sense.
*The woman who helps him destroy you will be the same woman who saves you.*
I looked up.
“Richard.””
“Yes?””
I held the letter.
“My father knew about Vanessa?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked toward the hallway.
At my daughter’s room.

Then he whispered:
“Because your father knew Daniel wasn’t the first person who betrayed you.””
