Chapter 3: The Woman They Forgot

The next morning, my house was quiet.

Not peaceful.

Quiet.

There’s a difference.

Peace feels warm.

Silence feels like the world is waiting.

I sat beside my daughter’s crib at sunrise, watching her sleep.

She had Daniel’s eyes.

That was the hardest part.

Not losing him.

Not the betrayal.

The eyes.

Because every time she looked at me, I remembered the man I thought he was.

My attorney, Evelyn, arrived at eight.

She had known my family for years.

She was the only person besides me who knew the full story behind Daniel’s success.

She placed a coffee cup beside me.

“You look exhausted.””

“I am.””

“Are you okay?””

I looked at my daughter.

“No.””

Evelyn nodded.

She didn’t give me a speech.

That was why I trusted her.

She knew some wounds didn’t need words.

“They made mistakes,” she said.

I looked up.

“People like Daniel?””

She opened her folder.

“People who believe kindness means weakness.””

She showed me the documents.

Vanessa had accessed private company information.

Not accidentally.

Not once.

Repeatedly.

“She was collecting financial records,” Evelyn said.

“For Daniel?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“That’s what we assumed.””

I noticed.

“What?””

She turned another page.

“There’s something strange.””

“What?””

“Vanessa wasn’t just helping Daniel.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

“She was hiding something from him too.””

Later that afternoon, Daniel showed up.

Without Vanessa.

That surprised me.

He stood outside my door looking less confident than yesterday.

“Mara, we need to talk.””

I didn’t open the door fully.

“We talked.””

“No. You embarrassed me.””

I stared at him.

There it was.

Not regret.

Not guilt.

Embarrassment.

“You brought another woman into my home three months after I gave birth.””

“I made mistakes.””

“You made choices.””

His face tightened.

“You’re really going to destroy everything over this?””

I almost smiled.

“Daniel, you destroyed everything.””

He lowered his voice.

“I loved you.””

The sentence hurt.

Not because I believed it.

Because a part of me wished I could.

“You loved the version of me that made your life easier.””

“That’s not fair.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“It isn’t.””

He stepped closer.

“Mara, please. We can fix this.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t want to fix us.””

His silence answered.

“You want to fix your reputation.””

He looked away.

And that was the moment I knew.

The man I married was gone long before he walked through that door.

That evening, Evelyn called me.

Her voice was serious.

“Mara, I found something.””

“What?””

“The original ownership documents.””

“And?””

“They weren’t stolen.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“They were moved.””

“By who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Daniel.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if he was preparing for this.””

I stood.

“Preparing for what?””

Evelyn’s voice became quieter.

“For leaving you.””

The room felt colder.

“How long?””

“Mara…”

“How long was he planning this?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Almost a year.””

A year.

While I was pregnant.

While he kissed my stomach.

While he promised me forever.

I walked to the window.

Across the street, Daniel’s car was parked.

He was watching the house.

But he wasn’t alone.

Someone sat in the passenger seat.

Someone I recognized.

Vanessa.

They weren’t talking.

They were arguing.

Then Vanessa opened the door.

She threw something onto Daniel’s lap.

Even from a distance, I could see his reaction.

Shock.

Fear.

He looked at the paper.

Then he looked toward my house.

May you like

And for the first time since this nightmare began…

Daniel looked afraid of me.
