Chapter 4: The Secret Behind Vanessa’s Smile
Three weeks later, Daniel stopped pretending.
The polite messages disappeared.
The fake apologies ended.
His lawyers started sending letters.
Demanding access.
Demanding money.
Demanding control.
It was almost funny.
A man who abandoned his wife was suddenly desperate to prove he was a responsible husband.
But Vanessa was the one who changed.
She stopped smiling.
That was how I knew something had happened.
People like Vanessa didn’t lose their confidence easily.
They lost it when the truth became heavier than the lie.
I saw her outside a coffee shop one afternoon.
She looked different.
Not powerful.
Not victorious.
Just tired.
She noticed me.
“Mara.””
I stopped.
“I don’t think we have anything to say.””
She looked down.
“I thought you would hate me.””
“I did.””
Her eyes lifted.
The honesty surprised her.
“But hate takes energy.””
She swallowed.
“I need to tell you something.””
I almost walked away.
Almost.
Then she said:
“Daniel wasn’t leaving you for me.””
I stopped.
“What?””
She looked around.
“He was leaving you because of what you knew.””
I stared.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Of course you don’t. He made sure you didn’t.””
The wind moved between us.
“What are you talking about?””
She pulled out her phone.
“I met Daniel two years ago.””
I stayed silent.
“He told me you were controlling. That you were obsessed with money. That you wouldn’t let him become his own man.””
I almost laughed.
“He said that?””
“Yes.””
She looked ashamed.
“I believed him.””
I didn’t answer.
“He promised me he was going to leave you after the baby was born.””
My stomach dropped.
“He planned this.””
“Yes.””
The word was quiet.
Heavy.
“Then why are you helping me?””
She looked away.
“Because I found out he was lying to me too.””
She showed me a message.
From Daniel.
To someone named “R.””
The message was simple.
*She believes everything. Keep her close until I get access.*
My fingers went cold.
“Who is R?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Then another message appeared.
A new one.
From the same number.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What?””
She turned the phone toward me.
The message said:
*You both made the same mistake. You underestimated Mara.*
I stared.
Someone else was watching.
Someone else knew.
That night, Evelyn came over with another file.
“I found the person behind the account transfers.””
I opened it.
A name appeared.
A name I knew.
A name from Daniel’s past.
My heart stopped.
Because Daniel hadn’t been planning to leave me.
He had been planning to take everything.
And someone had helped him.
Someone who had been inside my family for years.
Evelyn looked at me.
“Mara…”
I looked at the document again.
The signature at the bottom wasn’t Daniel’s.
It wasn’t Vanessa’s.
It belonged to someone I trusted.
Someone I loved.
Someone who had attended my daughter’s birth.
And then my phone rang.
I answered.
May you like
A familiar voice whispered:
“Don’t trust Evelyn.””
