Chapter 8: The Family Secret

David didn’t speak for several seconds.

He thought he had already discovered every possible betrayal.

He was wrong.

“Emily, what did you just say?””

His sister’s voice trembled.

“Dad had another relationship.””

David sat down slowly.

“No.””

“I found out years ago.””

“You knew?””

“I was seventeen.””

David closed his eyes.

The memories came rushing back.

His father’s funeral.

His mother standing alone.

Everyone telling her she was strong.

Nobody asking if she was okay.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Mom begged me not to.””

David looked toward the kitchen.

Where Margaret was quietly washing dishes.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

The pieces began connecting.

The house.

The money.

The secrecy.

His mother had carried pain nobody knew about.

“Why would Jessica know?””

Emily sighed.

“Because she found the old documents.””

David stood.

“What documents?””

“Dad’s second will.””

David felt his heart race.

“Second will?””

“Yes.””

Emily continued.

“Dad left money behind.””

David froze.

“How much?””

“I don’t know.””

“Emily.””

She hesitated.

“Enough that Jessica thought Mom was hiding it.””

David looked around the house.

All these years, his mother had struggled.

She had sold her home.

She had given him everything.

And someone believed she was secretly wealthy.

“She thought Mom had money.””

“Yes.””

David understood.

Jessica wasn’t just trying to remove Margaret.

She believed Margaret was standing between her and an inheritance.

That night, David searched through the old storage boxes in the attic.

Dust covered everything.

Photographs.

Old clothes.

Letters.

Finally, he found a small locked box.

Inside were documents.

And one envelope.

The name on it made him stop.

Margaret Carter.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter from his father.

His hands shook as he read.

Margaret,

I know I failed you.

I know no apology can erase what I did.

But I want our children to know one thing.

The money from my father’s estate belongs to you.

Not her.

Not anyone else.

You protected this family long enough.

Use it when you need it.

David looked confused.

His father had left money.

But his mother had never touched it.

Why?

Then he saw another document.

A legal transfer.

The money had been moved.

To a trust.

Managed by…

Margaret Carter.

He whispered:

“Mom.””

The next morning, he confronted her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Margaret looked at the papers.

Her face changed.

“You found them.””

“Yes.””

“David…”

“You had money.””

She looked down.

“Not money that belonged to me.””

“It was yours.””

“No.””

Margaret shook her head.

“It was meant for you and Emily.””

David stared.

“But you never used it.””

“I didn’t need it.””

He almost laughed.

“Mom, you sold your house.””

“Yes.””

“You struggled.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Margaret looked at him.

“Because I wanted you to build your life without carrying your father’s mistakes.””

David felt tears forming.

She had protected him from a pain he never knew existed.

Then his phone rang.

It was Robert, his lawyer.

“David, I found something.””

“What?””

“The trust documents were recently accessed.””

David frowned.

“By who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your wife.””

His blood went cold.

“She accessed the trust?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two weeks before she demanded your mother leave.””

David looked at Jessica across the room.

She was standing near the window.

Watching.

Waiting.

“How?””

Robert lowered his voice.

“She had help.””

David already knew.

“Who?””

“The person who gave her information about the trust.””

David looked at Jessica.

Then at Margaret.

May you like

And then Robert said the name.

“Your sister, Emily.””
