Chapter 5: The Paper Hidden Away

David felt like the floor had disappeared beneath him.

“What did you just say?””

Michael looked at Jessica.

“I thought you told him.””

Jessica’s face was pale.

“Leave.””

“No.””

Michael shook his head.

“You dragged me into this.””

Margaret stood behind David.

“What is he talking about?””

David looked at Jessica.

“Answer her.””

Jessica’s eyes filled with anger.

“You have no idea how difficult my life has been.””

David stared at her.

“So your solution was stealing from my mother?””

“No!””

She pointed at Margaret.

“You think she’s innocent?””

Margaret flinched.

Jessica continued.

“She has been controlling you your whole life.””

David couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“She made you feel guilty every time you tried to choose yourself.””

David looked at Margaret.

The woman who had spent her entire life putting everyone first.

He knew the truth.

“You’re lying.””

Jessica’s expression changed.

“You always take her side.””

“Because she never gave me a reason not to.””

Michael interrupted.

“Jessica, stop.””

She turned.

“You’re not helping.””

Michael sighed.

“She wanted me to help her transfer ownership.””

David froze.

“Ownership of what?””

Michael looked at him.

“The house.””

Margaret covered her mouth.

David slowly turned toward Jessica.

“You tried to take my house?””

Jessica looked away.

“It was supposed to be mine eventually.””

“Eventually?””

“You’re my husband.””

David’s voice became quiet.

“And my mother?””

Jessica didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Later that night, after Michael left, David searched through the documents in his office.

He found old papers.

Mortgage documents.

Insurance forms.

And something else.

A folder hidden beneath a stack of files.

Inside was a document with Jessica’s signature.

David opened it.

His hands began shaking.

Because it wasn’t a house transfer.

It was something much worse.

A legal agreement.

A plan showing that Jessica intended to claim Margaret was mentally incapable of managing her finances.

David looked up slowly.

“She was trying to take control of Mom’s money.””

Margaret stared at the papers.

“I don’t understand.””

David walked to her.

“Mom, she wanted the court to believe you couldn’t make decisions for yourself.””

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“Why?””

David looked toward the hallway where Jessica stood.

And for the first time, he saw the person she had been hiding.

Jessica wasn’t just angry.

She was desperate.

Because she had one more secret.

A secret even Michael didn’t know.

May you like

And the next morning, when David received a phone call from the lawyer who prepared those documents, he learned there was another name connected to Jessica’s plan.

A name that would reveal who had been helping her from the beginning.
