Chapter 3: The Person Behind The Plan

David couldn’t sleep.

He sat alone in the living room while the rest of the house remained silent.

The message on Jessica’s phone kept repeating in his mind.

Once she’s gone, we can finally…

Finally what?

The question haunted him.

At 2 a.m., he found Margaret sitting by the window.

She was holding an old photo album.

“You’re awake too?”” David asked.

Margaret smiled sadly.

“Old people don’t always sleep well.””

David sat beside her.

“Mom…”

She looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

Her eyebrows tightened.

“For what?””

“For not noticing.””

Margaret closed the album.

“David, don’t blame yourself.””

“I should have known.””

“You trusted your wife.””

“And I should have protected you.””

Margaret reached for his hand.

“You protected me last night.””

David looked at her.

“For the first time in months, I felt like I belonged here.””

Those words hurt him more than any accusation.

Because he realized his mother had been feeling like a guest in his home.

The next morning, David made a decision.

He was going to find the truth.

He started by checking the household account.

Jessica had always handled the finances because she said she was better with money.

But when David reviewed the statements, his stomach turned.

There were expensive dinners.

Hotel charges.

Luxury purchases.

And several transfers to the same person.

Michael Reed.

That afternoon, David confronted Jessica.

“Who is he?””

Jessica looked at the bank statement on the table.

“You went through my accounts?””

“I’m asking about Michael.””

She sat down slowly.

“He’s a friend.””

“A friend who received $15,000?””

Jessica stayed quiet.

David leaned forward.

“Did my mother’s money pay for that?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

David noticed.

“Jessica.””

She looked frustrated.

“Fine. Some of it did.””

David stood.

“You stole from my mother.””

“I borrowed it.””

“She’s 75 years old!””

“I was going to pay it back.””

“When?””

Jessica looked away.

David’s voice lowered.

“Who is Michael?””

She hesitated.

“He helped me with something.””

“What something?””

Jessica didn’t answer.

Then the front door opened.

Margaret entered carrying groceries.

She immediately sensed the tension.

“What’s happening?””

David looked at Jessica.

“I think Mom deserves to know.””

Jessica’s face went pale.

“No.””

David ignored her.

“Mom, did Jessica ever tell you why she needed the rent money?””

Margaret shook her head.

“She said the bills were expensive.””

David looked at Jessica.

“Tell her.””

Jessica remained silent.

Margaret slowly put the groceries down.

“Jessica?””

Finally, Jessica spoke.

“I was struggling.””

“With what?”” David asked.

“My business.””

David frowned.

“What business?””

Jessica looked trapped.

The silence answered before she did.

“You don’t have a business.””

Jessica looked away.

Margaret’s eyes filled with disappointment.

“Then where did my money go?””

Jessica whispered:

“I made a mistake.””

David laughed bitterly.

“A mistake is forgetting an appointment.””

He pointed toward Margaret.

“This was taking money from someone who trusted you.””

Jessica’s expression hardened.

“You act like I’m the only one who benefited from this house.””

“What does that mean?””

She looked directly at Margaret.

“Maybe it’s time she tells you the truth.””

Margaret went still.

David noticed.

“Mom?””

Margaret looked nervous.

“David…”

“What truth?””

She opened her mouth.

But before she could speak, Jessica smiled.

A smile that made David realize something.

Jessica wasn’t afraid anymore.
