Chapter 4: The Secret Margaret Carried

The rain poured against the windows that night.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, David looked at his mother.

“Mom, what is she talking about?””

Margaret sat down slowly.

Her hands trembled.

“There is something I never told you.””

David felt his chest tighten.

“What?””

She looked at the floor.

“Before I moved in here, I sold my old house.””

David nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

Margaret shook her head.

“You don’t know everything.””

Jessica stood nearby, watching.

“I gave most of the money away.””

David looked confused.

“To who?””

Margaret took a deep breath.

“To you.””

The room went silent.

David stared at her.

“What?””

“When you were trying to start your company, you needed money.””

“That was years ago.””

“I knew you were struggling.””

David shook his head.

“Mom, I thought that money came from your savings.””

Margaret smiled sadly.

“It did.””

Jessica crossed her arms.

“And she never told you.””

David looked at Jessica.

“Why does that matter?””

“Because she always makes herself look like the victim.””

Margaret looked hurt.

“I never wanted anything from you.””

David’s voice broke.

“Mom…”

“I only wanted my son to have a chance.””

David remembered that time.

He remembered his mother saying she was fine.

He remembered how she skipped meals and wore the same coat for years.

He had thought she was simply careful.

He never knew she had sacrificed everything.

Jessica spoke again.

“That doesn’t change the fact that she was living here.””

David turned toward her.

“You mean in the house she helped me afford?””

Jessica said nothing.

But Margaret looked worried.

“David, please.””

He looked at her.

“Please what?””

“Don’t destroy your marriage because of me.””

David shook his head.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“You spent your entire life protecting everyone else.””

He held back tears.

“But nobody protected you.””

Margaret looked away.

Then David noticed something.

Jessica wasn’t listening.

She was texting.

“Who are you messaging?””

Jessica quickly locked her phone.

“Nobody.””

David stepped closer.

“Give me the phone.””

“No.””

That single word confirmed everything.

David took a breath.

“Jessica, who is Michael?””

She didn’t answer.

Then a knock came at the door.

Everyone froze.

Jessica looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

David walked toward the entrance.

When he opened the door, a man stood outside.

A man in his forties wearing an expensive jacket.

“Michael?””

The man looked at Jessica.

“Why did you call me here?””

David stared at him.

“You know my wife?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“I think we need to talk.””

Jessica stepped between them.

“David, please.””

But Michael looked directly at David.

“You don’t know what she was planning.””

David’s face hardened.

“What planning?””

Michael swallowed.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“She wasn’t just trying to get your mother out of the house.””

May you like

A long silence followed.

“She was trying to get the house itself.””
