Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew the Truth
Alexander answered.
“Victoria.””
Claire listened carefully.
She had heard that name many times.
Victoria Sterling.
Richard’s mother.
The elegant woman who appeared in charity magazines.
The woman who had hugged Claire at their wedding.
The woman who had whispered:
“You are exactly the kind of woman Richard needs.””
Claire once believed it was a compliment.
Now she wondered if it had been a warning.
Alexander put the call on speaker.
“Why are you calling me?””
Victoria’s voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Because this has gone too far.””
Claire stood still.
“You mean Richard throwing me out?””
A pause.
Victoria knew she was listening.
“Claire.””
The way she said her name sounded almost gentle.
Almost.
“I am sorry this happened.””
Claire looked away.
“Are you?””
“Yes.””
“Because your son humiliated me?””
Another pause.
“Because Richard made a mistake.””
Claire felt anger rise.
“A mistake is forgetting an appointment. A mistake is buying the wrong gift. Throwing your pregnant wife out of a hotel is a choice.””
Victoria sighed.
“You sound just like Eleanor.””
The room went silent.
Claire looked at Alexander.
“What did you say?””
Victoria did not answer.
Claire stepped closer to the phone.
“You knew my grandmother.””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
Her heart raced.
“How?””
Victoria’s voice became colder.
“Your grandmother was dangerous.””
Alexander’s expression hardened.
“She was honest.””
“No,” Victoria replied.
“She was reckless.””
Claire gripped the table.
“What did she know?””
Victoria said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“She knew what the Sterling family was built on.””
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Finally, Alexander spoke.
“She knows.””
Claire looked at him.
“She knows everything.””
Daniel nodded.
“We need to find the original records.””
Claire looked confused.
“Original records?””
Alexander opened Eleanor’s letter again.
“There is a reason she hid the message inside the bracelet.””
“Because someone was looking for it.””
“Yes.””
“And she trusted me with it.””
Alexander nodded.
“Because she knew you would protect the truth.””
Claire laughed sadly.
“I can barely protect myself.””
Alexander looked at her.
“You walked into a room full of strangers and refused to let Richard make you disappear.””
She looked at him.
“That’s not bravery.””
“It is.””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“It’s survival.””
Alexander smiled faintly.
“Sometimes survival is the bravest thing a person can do.””
Later that afternoon, Claire and Alexander traveled to Eleanor’s old house.
The property had been abandoned for years.
Dust covered the furniture.
The garden was overgrown.
But Claire felt something the moment she stepped inside.
Like the house remembered her.
“My grandmother lived here?””
“Yes.””
“She never brought me here.””
“She was protecting you.””
Claire walked through the hallway.
Old photographs covered the walls.
Her grandmother.
Her mother.
Her younger self.
Then she stopped.
A picture frame sat hidden behind a stack of books.
She picked it up.
Her breath caught.
The photo showed Eleanor standing beside three people.
Alexander.
Victor Sterling.
And Richard’s mother, Victoria.
Claire stared.
“They knew each other.””
Alexander looked shocked.
“That picture shouldn’t exist.””
“Why?””
“Because after Eleanor disappeared, Victoria claimed she barely knew her.””
Claire turned the photo over.
There was writing on the back.
A date.
And a message.
*The three people I trusted became the three people I feared.*
Claire’s blood ran cold.
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Daniel reached for his phone.
Alexander looked toward the staircase.
“Who’s there?””
No answer.
Then a voice came from above.
A woman’s voice.
“You shouldn’t have found that.””
Claire stepped back.
The figure slowly appeared.
Older.
Tired.
Terrified.
Claire recognized her immediately.
Victoria Sterling.
Richard’s mother.
But she was not wearing designer clothes.
She was not smiling.
She looked like someone who had been running from the past for decades.
Victoria looked at Claire.
Then at the bracelet.
“You have no idea what you’re carrying.””
Alexander stepped forward.
“Then tell us.””
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“I tried to stop them.””
Claire whispered:
“Stop who?””
May you like
Victoria looked at her.
“The people who killed your grandmother.””
