Chapter 2: The Bracelet Nobody Was Supposed to See
The man in the corner had been trying to ignore the argument.
He was used to seeing wealthy people destroy each other behind expensive walls.
Money created beautiful buildings.
It also created ugly secrets.
But when Claire lifted her suitcase, the sleeve of her sweater slipped back.
The bracelet appeared.
A simple silver chain.
Old.
Scratched.
Almost worthless to anyone who did not know what they were looking at.
The man stopped breathing for a second.
Because he knew that bracelet.
He had spent twenty years searching for it.
His name was Alexander Vale.
To the world, he was the founder of Vale International, one of the largest investment companies in the country.
A billionaire.
A man whose face appeared on magazine covers.
A man who owned hotels, airlines, and technology companies.
But nobody in the Grand Belmont knew that the bracelet around Claire Sterling’s wrist was connected to the only person he had ever considered family.
Alexander stood.
His assistant, Daniel, noticed immediately.
“Mr. Vale?””
Alexander ignored him.
His eyes remained on Claire.
Richard was still talking.
“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.””
Claire looked exhausted.
“I’m leaving.””
“Good.””
She reached for her suitcase.
The wheel broke.
The heavy bag tilted.
Before it could fall again, a hand caught it.
Claire looked up.
Alexander Vale stood beside her.
“I’ve got it.””
She blinked.
“I’m sorry?””
“The suitcase.””
His voice was calm.
“I said I’ve got it.””
Richard immediately stepped forward.
“This is a private family matter.””
Alexander looked at him.
There was no anger in his expression.
That somehow made Richard uncomfortable.
“Is it?””
Richard frowned.
“Excuse me?””
Alexander glanced around the lobby.
“A pregnant woman being thrown out of a hotel seems like a public matter.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“Do you know who I am?””
Alexander almost smiled.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“And I’m asking if you know who you are.””
The lobby became silent.
Claire looked between them.
She had no idea who this stranger was.
Richard, however, seemed to recognize him.
His expression changed.
“Mr. Vale.””
Alexander nodded slightly.
“Mr. Sterling.””
Richard suddenly became polite.
A completely different man.
“Perhaps there has been a misunderstanding.””
Alexander looked at the scattered baby clothes.
“Has there?””
Richard opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Alexander turned to Claire.
“Are you injured?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
“Do you have somewhere safe to go?””
The question almost broke her.
Because nobody had asked.
Not once.
Claire looked down.
“I’ll figure something out.””
Alexander noticed the way she protected her stomach.
The way her hand trembled.
The way she tried to appear stronger than she was.
“Sometimes,” Alexander said quietly, “figuring something out requires help.””
Richard stepped forward.
“She’s my wife.””
Alexander looked at him.
“Your wife who you removed from your hotel room?””
Richard’s expression tightened.
“This is complicated.””
“Most cruel things are.””
Claire looked at Alexander.
“I appreciate your kindness, but I don’t want trouble.””
Alexander studied her bracelet again.
Then he asked:
“Where did you get that?””
Claire touched it instinctively.
“This?””
“Yes.””
She hesitated.
“My grandmother gave it to me.””
Alexander’s face changed.
“Your grandmother’s name?””
Claire frowned.
“Why?””
“Please.””
Something in his voice made her answer.
“Eleanor Sterling.””
Alexander went completely still.
Richard noticed.
“What?””
Alexander looked at Claire.
“Your grandmother was Eleanor Sterling?””
“Yes.””
A strange silence filled the room.
Daniel walked closer.
“Mr. Vale?””
Alexander didn’t respond.
Because twenty-three years earlier, a woman named Eleanor had saved his life.
She had been a nurse at a small hospital.
He had been a terrified teenager with nobody.
She had treated him like family.
Before she disappeared, she gave him one thing.
A photograph.
And in that photograph was the same bracelet.
The same silver chain.
The same tiny engraved symbol.
A symbol from a family he had spent years trying to find.
Alexander looked at Claire’s wrist.
Then at her face.
“You need somewhere to stay tonight.””
Claire shook her head.
“I can’t accept money from a stranger.””
Alexander lowered his voice.
“Claire, I’m not offering charity.””
She looked confused.
“Then what are you offering?””
Alexander stared at the bracelet.
“The truth.””
Before Claire could respond, Richard’s phone suddenly rang.
He looked at the screen.
May you like
The color drained from his face.
Because the person calling was someone Richard believed was dead.
