Chapter 6: The Heir They Tried to Erase
Claire read the sentence again.
Then again.
The words refused to make sense.
*The baby you are carrying is the last remaining heir to the Sterling legacy.*
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Alexander watched her carefully.
“Claire…”
“No.””
She stood abruptly.
The chair scraped against the floor.
“My baby is not a symbol. Not a business asset. Not a reason for people to fight over money.””
Her voice shook.
“My child is a person.””
Alexander nodded.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
The question hurt him because he knew why she asked.
Everyone around Claire had spent months treating her pregnancy like an inconvenience.
Richard saw the baby as an obligation.
His family saw the baby as an inheritance.
Nobody had looked at the child as a human being.
Until now.
Alexander lowered his voice.
“That is exactly why we have to protect you.””
Claire looked down at the letter.
“Why would my grandmother write this?””
“She knew something would happen.””
“She knew I would be pregnant?””
“No.””
Alexander paused.
“She knew your family would come after the Sterling bloodline.””
A cold feeling moved through Claire.
“Why?””
Before Alexander could answer, Daniel entered the room.
“Mr. Vale.””
Alexander turned.
“What happened?””
Daniel placed a folder on the table.
“The court approved Richard’s emergency request.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“What request?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“He is claiming the bracelet belongs to the Sterling family estate.””
Claire almost laughed.
“The bracelet my grandmother gave me?””
“He says it contains confidential family information.””
“And the court believed him?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Temporarily.””
Claire felt betrayed by a system she barely understood.
“How can someone just say something belongs to them?””
Alexander looked at her.
“Because powerful people often confuse ownership with entitlement.””
Claire looked at him.
“You sound like you’ve seen this before.””
His expression changed.
“I have.””
For a moment, the billionaire disappeared.
Not the man from magazine covers.
Not the person who owned buildings and companies.
Just a man who had lost something.
“What happened to Eleanor?””
Alexander was silent.
Then he said:
“I was there the night she disappeared.””
Claire froze.
“What?””
“She told me to run.””
The room became quiet.
Alexander walked toward the window.
“She found me outside the hospital after I had been attacked.””
“Attacked?””
“She discovered someone had been following me.””
Claire stared.
“Why?””
“Because Eleanor had information.””
“About your family?””
Alexander nodded.
“She knew my father’s company was connected to illegal financial schemes.””
Claire looked at the document.
“And Richard’s father?””
Alexander looked at her.
“Victor Sterling.””
The name felt familiar.
Richard had mentioned him hundreds of times.
His father.
His mentor.
The man who built the Sterling empire.
Claire sat slowly.
“Richard knew?””
“I don’t know.””
“But he must have.””
Alexander shook his head.
“Sometimes people are raised inside a lie so long they mistake it for the truth.””
Claire looked toward the window.
The city stretched beneath them.
A world that seemed impossibly far away.
“What happens now?””
Alexander answered honestly.
“Now Richard will try to destroy your reputation.””
“He already started.””
“He will try harder.””
Claire looked at the article.
The headline still burned in her mind.
She imagined strangers reading it.
Judging her.
Calling her greedy.
Calling her a fraud.
She had spent years building a quiet life.
Now strangers who knew nothing about her were deciding who she was.
“What if nobody believes me?””
Alexander walked closer.
“I do.””
The simple answer made her eyes fill.
“Why?””
“Because I know what it feels like when powerful people rewrite your story.””
A notification suddenly appeared on Daniel’s phone.
His face changed.
“Mr. Vale.””
“What?””
Daniel turned the screen.
A video had been posted online.
Richard was standing outside the Sterling headquarters.
Behind him were reporters.
Claire watched as he spoke.
“My wife has been struggling emotionally throughout her pregnancy.””
Her stomach dropped.
Richard continued.
“I tried to support her, but unfortunately, she became unpredictable.””
Claire whispered:
“He’s lying.””
Alexander’s eyes remained on the screen.
“He’s preparing the public.””
Richard looked into the cameras.
“I only want what is best for my child.””
Claire felt sick.
The same man who threw her into a hotel lobby was pretending to be a loving father.
Then Richard said something that made Alexander go still.
“We are also seeking answers about Mr. Vale’s involvement with my wife.””
The reporters immediately reacted.
Richard smiled.
A calculated smile.
“He appeared very suddenly.””
Claire looked at Alexander.
“What does that mean?””
Alexander did not answer.
Because his phone was ringing.
The caller ID showed a name.
May you like
A name Claire recognized.
Richard’s mother.
