Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Betrayal

Claire read the document three times.

She still could not understand it.

“How is this possible?””

Daniel stood quietly.

“I know it’s difficult.””

“My grandmother never mentioned Alexander.””

“She had reasons.””

Claire looked up.

“Reasons?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your grandmother protected people.””

The room felt smaller.

Claire looked at the bracelet.

The bracelet suddenly felt heavier.

“What exactly happened?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Mr. Vale should tell you.””

But Alexander was not in the room.

He was standing in his office downstairs, staring at an old photograph.

A photograph of Eleanor.

A woman who had changed his life.

A woman who had died believing her family’s biggest secret was buried forever.

When Claire entered, he turned.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For bringing you into something complicated.””

Claire held the document.

“I think I was already in it.””

Alexander was silent.

She walked closer.

“Who is my grandmother to you?””

Alexander looked at the photograph.

“She saved me.””

Claire waited.

“When I was sixteen, I was homeless.””

She had never expected that.

“The world sees me now and assumes I came from money.””

He smiled sadly.

“I didn’t.””

He explained how Eleanor had found him sleeping outside a hospital.

How she gave him food.

How she helped him get into school.

How she believed he could become something.

“She was the first person who saw me as more than a mistake.””

Claire swallowed.

“And the bracelet?””

“She gave it to me.””

Claire looked shocked.

“But it was my grandmother’s.””

“Yes.””

Alexander looked at her.

“Because she gave it back before she disappeared.””

Claire frowned.

“Why?””

Alexander’s expression darkened.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Your family.””

The answer stunned her.

“My family?””

Alexander nodded.

“Your grandfather, Henry Sterling, was involved in illegal business deals. Eleanor discovered what he was doing.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

“I know it’s hard.””

“My grandfather was respected.””

“So was Richard.””

The sentence silenced her.

Alexander continued.

“Eleanor found evidence. She planned to expose him.””

“What happened?””

“She vanished.””

Claire’s hand covered her mouth.

“My grandmother died from a heart condition.””

Alexander looked away.

“That was the official story.””

The room went quiet.

Claire sat down.

All her life, she thought she knew where she came from.

Now everything felt like a lie.

Then her phone rang.

Richard.

She stared at the screen.

Alexander said nothing.

Claire answered.

“What do you want?””

Richard’s voice was different.

Softer.

“I need to talk.””

“No.””

“Claire, please.””

“You threw me out.””

“I made a mistake.””

She almost laughed.

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

“What mistake? Losing your humanity?””

Silence.

Then Richard whispered:

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””

Claire looked at Alexander.

“What does that mean?””

Richard’s voice lowered.

“Your grandmother left something behind.””

Her heart stopped.

“What?””

“Something valuable.””

Claire stood.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard said nothing for several seconds.

Then:

“The bracelet.””

Claire froze.

Alexander immediately looked up.

Richard continued.

“Give it to me, Claire.””

Her fingers tightened around the silver chain.

“No.””

“Claire.””

“No.””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Richard’s voice became desperate.

“That bracelet could destroy everything.””

The call ended.

Claire slowly lowered the phone.

Alexander’s face was unreadable.

“What did he say?””

She looked at him.

“He wants the bracelet.””

For the first time, Alexander looked genuinely afraid.

May you like

Because he knew Richard was not searching for jewelry.

He was searching for what was hidden inside it.
